Gibson tells Scully that he "fell" while he was running away, and yes, folks, we have our second gross broken limb of the evening. Scully tells him that she's going to make him a splint and set his leg, but that she's going to have to get him out of there eventually, to get the leg checked. She promises that she's going to come back with a car, and that she's not going to let anything bad happen to him. "You said that to me once before," Gibson reminds her. Oh, burn!

It's night at the School in the Middle of Nowhere, and Doggett receives a call from everyone's favorite Deputy Director, Funnyman Kersh. Kersh informs Doggett that he's getting "reports from Arizona" that he's found Agent Mulder. Doggett explains that he saw Mulder, but that he hasn't, exactly, technically, in the true sense of the word, actually -- Kersh interrupts Doggett, asking him what the hell is going on down there. Doggett makes more excuses. Kersh wonders "how the FBI can FIND A MAN and then LOSE HIM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT? Because I'D LIKE TO KNOW." He reminds Doggett that he put Doggett in charge "down there" and snaps at him to "do the DAMN JOB," before slamming down the phone. Sounds like someone missed his nap this afternoon. Doggett looks disappointed in himself. Behind him, Skinner snickers slightly. Doggett turns around and asks Skinner if he "amuses [him]." Does he amuse you, Skinner? Like a CLOWN? Skinner, who...good God, man, LOWER THE BELT -- anyway, he says that it does not amuse him. But I think it does, a little. He asks how Doggett and his men found Gibson at the same time he and Scully did. Doggett wonders whether Skinner is insinuating that he's spying on them. Skinner says that he thinks Kersh is the one doing the spying, and spits that Doggett is "a pawn in a rigged game." They stare at each other intensely for a moment, and then Doggett grabs Skinner and they start making out.

Not really. Actually, Doggett gives Skinner the Frat Boy Head Nod, and they wander a little farther away from the henchmen. "You've painted me a picture, now put it in a frame," Doggett says. That's mighty folksy. Sounds like someone was watching Dan Rather on election night. I wonder if he's going to start waxing poetic about recounts and the possibilities inherent in a hanging chad. Skinner says that Doggett is a "damn good FBI agent," and that a lot of people can see him in the Director's seat one day. And that's why Doggett has been "set up to fail." Skinner tells Doggett to "give into the truth" and listen to Scully, because that's the only way he's going to find Mulder. And then he drops the bomb, by saying that once he does find Mulder, if he does, he's still screwed, because he if puts anything otherworldly in his report, Kersh will "ruin [him]." And Skinner is "betting that was [Kersh's] plan." Long stare. Not looking away from Skinner, Doggett calls for Scully. A call for Scully goes out over the radio.
