Payback's A Bitch

The opening credits roll and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is the first big-name musical guest to play on the show. Not that big a name, however. I'm sure they'll be realizing the dividends of this appearance almost immediately.

Peter and Samantha are engaged in musically accompanied lovemaking. Many close-ups of hands on naughty bits. Heather casually interrupts the proceedings to announce that there's been an accident. Jenny has been rushed to the emergency room. Aw, not the hospital again. We're there almost as much as we're at the office. It's too soon to tell but it's all just so terrible. Poor Jenny is so young. Heather offers the barely dressed Samantha a sweater. The fiery Latino tells her she can leave since the show is over. ["Titans? Over? Not quite yet." -- Wing Chun] Heather remarks that it wasn't much of a show. ["Yeah, I'll say." -- Wing Chun] "A little too PG for my taste," Heather critiques. "Personally I like a nice hard R." Eww and double eww.

An ambulance rolls up to the ER door. Gwen, Laurie, and David are already inside and working on their worried expressions. A Dr. Kaufman arrives and informs them that Jenny has been in and out of consciousness, but it appears that there's been no permanent damage. Aw, crap. Don't forget to check the brain. Gwen wants to see her, but because the junkie's been asking for David, a mother's wishes are rejected -- hospital policy. It looks like David's not going either, as he and Laurie sit down on one of the waiting room couches to fret with one another. Laurie's worried that Jenny might have seen them in the shower. Maybe she read my recap. David tells her that she's paranoid. Even if Jenny was in the bathroom, there was way too much steam fogging up the windows for her to make a positive ID. Still, Laurie feels so "responsible." David corrects her -- she's not feeling responsible, she's just feeling guilty. He is, too, but he assures her that it's not their fault. The doctor motions for David to follow her to Jenny's room. Jack and Ethan arrive on the scene. Every show is like this -- someone goes to the hospital, and the family arrives in waves. Each new group is told of what happened and we the audience, get to hear the same forced dialogue over and over again. Gwen assures Jack that Jenny's going to be okay, but says that they had to pump her stomach for pills, alcohol, and some pennies. Jack is stunned: "You're saying this wasn't an accident?" Sure it was, Jack. Jenny was innocently walking around her apartment and accidentally dropped half a dozen Vicadin and a fifth of bourbon down her throat. Jenny's obviously desperate and everyone's going to have to rally and help her.
