Borrowing Grandma's

They make it to the concert hall, seriously strapped for time. They have to set up outside, and Megan is worried that the day is too warm. Van notices that their stuff starts melting immediately. Katzie thinks that he's on a runaway train with his glitter use. Carlos is airbrushing his cake and makes it the wrong color. Nelson notes that two teams are doing everything similarly and two teams are doing something else. Somebody's got the right idea and someone is wrong. Stuff is melting off of their cakes!

The gala begins. Johnny, Gail and Margaret arrive with Hubert Keller. Johnny notices ripples in the fondant on Matthew's cake. They taste. They love Matthew's layer which is a lemon pound cake with almond dacquiose, crème fraiche mousse and strawberry jam. Just something simple. Megan made a yellow butter cake with honey caramel cream, preserves and mocha praline feuilletine. Hubert likes the idea but Margaret wishes there were more color. Chris presents his chocolate sponge cake with praline jam and vanilla cremeux. Johnny says his cake tells a story. Melissa presents her cardamom sponge cake with ginger cream and strawberry jam. Johnny found the flavor bold and tasty. We see a guest of the gala say it was her favorite.

Katzie tells the judges that they took a whimsical approach to music hall. Johnny thinks that the musical instruments, because they are so literal, come off looking sloppy. Gail thinks that they should have scaled back their design. Katzie presents her buttermilk cake with black currant jam and pistachio buttercream. Margaret likes the taste but Johnny thinks it's maybe too moist. Amanda gives a devil's food cake with raspberry gelee, chocolate buttercream and praline feuilletine. Margaret doesn't like the fruit, but Hubert likes the texture. Vanarin made a smoke salted caramel cake with pistachio buttercream that is declared dry.

Orlando's team has to explain that part of their design element broke on their cake. Craig thinks they're in trouble. Orlando presents his vanilla sponge soaked in Chambord, blackberry and port buttercream. Gail thinks that the fondant was overpowering. Nelson gives his vanilla and lemon zest with pistachio buttercream and white chocolate pearls. Johnny finds it very interesting. Craig gives his grandma's chocolate cake with caramel and marshmallow buttercream. Margaret thinks it needed a little salt. Also, it's not his grandma's recipe. Why name it that, you might ask. Orlando interviews that he hopes his team is safe, but, if necessary, he would send Craig home because he thinks he's outclassed on the show.
