I'm Not Standing Anymore

Ripley enters and acknowledges that their press hasn't been very good. Silver lining, though: everyone will forget about The Viva's failure as soon as some disaster makes it into the news. Lord knows that's been behind most financial reversals of the past 100 or so years. I think there's like a whole department of Merrill Lynch that just makes bad things happen in the world so other people's failings become yesterday's news. Ripley says that "in this business, image is everything" and The Viva is having some image issues. But he says that everything will be fine, especially if all of the Holdens stick together.

As if on cue, Cheyenne walks through with a suitcase. She's moving out because she found out Ripley punched Spence. She's going to live with her friend Holly. Ripley tells Cheyenne that Spence was saying things about her that warranted a beating (which is total bullshit), but Cheyenne points out that Ripley acted like he didn't even remember who Spence was when she was crying about him dumping her. That's a surprising amount of nuance for this argument. Not only is she pissed that he roughed up her man, she's mad that he was lying to her. It's news to Natalie that Ripley hit Spence. Cheyenne says that she will never trust Ripley again, and she's outta there. The scoring of this scene is all bouncy and silly so we're clearly not supposed to take any of this seriously, which seems like another mistake. Why lower the stakes for the viewer? There's nothing inherently funny about this situation -- in fact, while teenage melodrama is not unusual, moving out because you're pissed at your dad is a fairly big event -- so why make us care less about the situation? Trust me, people making Viva Laughlin, you'd do well to try to make us care about anything at this point. Natalie says to Ripley, "You really shouldn't have hit him." After she follows Cheyenne, Jack tells Ripley that Spence was a jerk and deserved to get punched. Ripley says that, with the way Cheyenne and Natalie are acting, you would think Ripley KILLED SOMEONE. This gets a stare from Jack.
