BLOGS
There's a lot to love about South Park -- particularly in the past few seasons, during which I've noticed that the plotting seems a lot tighter without sacrificing any of the weirdness or subversion that have been the show's trademarks -- but this week's episode once again highlighted one of my favourite things about the show: Mr. Randy Marsh (voice of Trey "My Next Husband" Parker). Also known as Stan's dad, Randy is possibly the most ridiculously immature adult in a town full of them, always trying to ingratiate himself with Stan and the other boys to prove that he's still cool. The latest episode, "Guitar Queer-o," had Randy trying to impress the Guitar Hero-obsessed boys by playing "Carry On Wayward Son" on a real guitar, only to learn that "real guitars are for old people." Remember when Randy pushed to be a member of the "boy" "band" Fingerbang? Hee hee.
Randy's had a lot of great moments over the years -- playing World Of Warcraft, engaging in a quasi-gay sex act with Kyle's dad during a meteor shower, producing a record-breaking poo (bigger than Bono's!) -- but in our household, Randy's most memorable performance was in "The Losing Edge" (pictured), in which Randy trains hard to be the drunkest drunk sports dad in town. "I'm sorry, I thought this was America!" has a permanent place in our household's catchphrase repertoire, for which we say, thank you, Randy Marsh.
