Manic Mondays

by Angel Cohn April 28, 2008 3:50 PM
How is it possible that so many of my favorite fun shows (some of which I'm ashamed to be watching) have landed on Monday nights? It is like an embarrassment of riches for those who favor teen dramas or reality TV (or in some cases both). My DVR and TiVo are both about ready to explode. In addition to mainstream stuff like House, Bones Samantha Who?, Dancing With the Stars and How I Met Your Mother, there's an over abundance guilty pleasures on too. If you aren't watching... you are missing out on some juicy (and usually hot-bodied) entertainment (if you are into that kind of thing).
Greek: I was never in a sorority but if I had been, I imagine it would have been exactly like this show. Instead of studying, my college life would have been filled with backstabbing, drinking, partying, random sex, twisted romantic triangles, struggling with a virginal roommate, nicknames and lots of snapping. Like Degrassi (my Friday night teen addiction) it goes there, though usually in a much more lighthearted way. I almost wish I could go back to college... almost.

Gossip Girl: Did you hear? This gooey Upper East Side drama is finally back and better (or worse, if your name is Blair Waldorf) than ever. These queen bees, wannabes and pretty boy toys put the guilt in guilty pleasure, and so what if the show doesn't always make sense or have any basis in reality. It is still fun to watch. You know you love it!

Wildfire: Speaking of shows that don't make sense or have any basis of reality, these teens or twentysomethings (hard to actually tell since I swear when this show started they were just finishing high school and only about a year has passed since then) have teen angst and romantic triangles down pat. I'm inexplicably compelled to find out if Kris, who went from a juvenile delinquent to horse jockey to veterinary assistant, finally settles on the rich playboy Junior Davis (she did just break up his wedding) or goes back to reliable sweetheart Matt Ritter in the looming series finale. Oh, and tonight we discover if DS9's Kira survives being trampled by a horse or not. What's not to love?

The Hills: I admit I don't watch it every single week, but I check in fairly regularly to find out what Heidi and Lauren are up to or just to see Audrina stare blankly a lot. Our fab recapper Kim, and Us Weekly do a great job of keeping me up to date on the dramarama so I'm not too out of the loop. But these girls are unavoidable, and somehow irresistible so I make room for them when I can. I'm mostly really grateful that MTV finally quit it with the double episodes though, one hour is just way too much of a good thing.

The Big Bang Theory: I like nerdy guys. I especially like nerdy guys who can't function well in society. Ergo this show cracks me up. It may not be as original a plot as some current sitcoms, to me geeky roommates + hot girl = big laughs.

Dirty Jobs: While I feel dirty after watching some of these shows, this one I actually feel like showering after. Some episodes quite literally make my skin crawl. Mike Rowe is a brave, brave man going into some of the most disgusting places you've ever seen in your entire life and exposes truly grosser than gross jobs that help make society better.

Mondays are also home to One Tree Hill and The Bachelor, both of which are on my miss list primarily because there is too much on. Maybe if they were on a different night, they'd stand a fighting chance, because there's no show more convolutedly dramatic than One Tree Hill and I love to laugh at the slutty gals on The Bachelor throwing themselves at Mr. Wrong.
