Dollhouse Fans Ready for the Worst

Dollhouse Fans Ready for the Worst

Now this is what I called being prepared. Joss Whedon loyalists are tired of being burned by Fox who caused Whedon's Firefly to go down in a blaze of glory by pulling it off the air in its first season. The devotees have banded together in support of Joss's new midseason (as in January 2009!) series Dollhouse which also stars awesome Buffy alum Eliza Dushku. These crazies, er, fans are campaigning harder than Hillary Clinton, and arranging viewing parties and creating at cult-like buzz about a show that no one has even seen yet! Part of me admires these nut jobs, er, fans for using the power of the internet to support their favorite TV guru, and since the clips of this show that were shown at the Fox upfront look kick ass, they shouldn't be disappointed by the series when it eventually airs.

The other part of my normal non-Buffy addicted brain (admittedly that is the smaller portion of my mind) thinks these fanatics are doing Dollhouse a disservice by not even giving at a chance to succeed by presuming that it is doomed to fail. Sure Fox canceled Whedon's Firefly and Dushku's Tru Calling but that doesn't necessarily mean that this one will be axed prematurely as well. Fox has recently done well with the genre show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and also picked up the sci-fi-esque Fringe for fall. The net is even trying out their new abbreviated commercial strategy on the forthcoming series, so it seems like they want it to be a hit probably more than the average Whedon fan, since they've got big bucks at stake here. And money is what makes the world, or at least the TV network world, go around... not fan buzz.

Plus, this is kind of like stores that start putting up their Christmas decorations in October. Let me get through Halloween first and enjoy it before you start shoving carols down my throat. By the time I actually need or want to do any holiday shopping I'm so disgusted and over it that I just can't bear to go in to another pine-scented store and instead end up doing all my purchases over the internet where I'm not subjected to tinny versions of Rudolph at every turn. This campaign could have a similar effect. I say let me get through summer and the new fall shows before you start hyping the midseason stuff. Otherwise by the time January gets here I'll be sick of a show that I haven't even seen and just wait and watch the episodes on the internet or on DVD when I get a chance and then who will that help? No one.
