Starz is adapting the 2004 Academy Award Winning movie Crash for the small screen, and while this project was announced a while back, the cast was finally announced today. And, well, it lacks a little star power. According to The Hollywood Reporter, some people named Luis Chavez, Arlene Tur, Ross McCall, Brian Tee and Jocko Sims will head up the cast.
Now, I've spent upwards of 2-3 minutes on the Starz official site today, and while that may not be an exhaustive investigation, I saw no evidence of any other series on their roster. This made me wonder several things, in the following order:
1) If this is their first foray into cable series-ville, why would Starz choose a remake of something so goddamn lame, of all things? I mean, Starz may not be HBO or Showtime, but it's still a real channel. People have heard of it and are willing to pay for it. They also could have chosen a more compelling Oscar winner. I'd totally watch a Gladiator series. Gladiators are so hot right now, too.
2) OK, fine, you decided to go with Crash, Starz, it's your funeral. But you couldn't get any recognizable names to have anything to do with it? Not even one? What about someone who was on an '80s show? I feel like that Dukes of Hazzard guy did a lot to legitimize Smallville in the beginning. Maybe someone from L.A. Law needs work.
3) So the series is based on a lame movie, nobody with any sort of cred or notoriety would be caught dead on it, and you're still moving forward with this thing, Starz? Are you for real?!
The script for this thing better be amazing if it's going to survive with a bunch of strangers floating it. Who knows, maybe we'll get better casting news soon, but I doubt it.
