If all these new-fangled Japanese game shows are freaking you out at all, take comfort in this. The guy who brought you Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Wife Swap is set to executive produce revamped versions of The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game for the Game Show Network. Yeah, because hearing people bitch about marriage and dating (Cheaters aside) is soooo entertaining.
Revamped game shows come and go all the time. Some are good, some are bad. Angel doesn't think Whammy! lives up to Press Your Luck, but I love it (mostly for Whammy's plethora of pimp outfits, but still), and MTV's Singled Out was basically a very '90s version of The Dating Game, which I thought was far superior to its predecessor. The new Price is Right and the Louie Anderson Family Feud, on the other hand, suck. Hard.
My biggest complaint, however, is the lack of challenging trivia shows. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader contestants are borderline special needs, and Cash Cab, while fabulously entertaining and attractively hosted, is way too easy, with almost every contestant taking home bags of cash. Jeopardy is the only game show I can think of that actually requires brainy contestants, which is odd, because if they're going around remaking game shows of yore, why not try some of the '50s quiz shows? Did you see that Ralph Fiennes movie? Scandals aside, those things were hard! And yes, Americans are really stupid, we all know about that, but if Jeopardy's been on for as long as it has, there has to be some pocket of society that would watch an actually challenging game show. Right?
