In an attempt to become more like Grey's Anatomy (but with more bloody bodies) ER has cast four hot young things as regulars for next season (which, if there is a god, is supposedly the final season ... though they've said that like the last two years). Two guys who I don't recognize, Julian Morris and Victor Rasuk, will join Emily Rose (of Jericho fame) and the formerly famous Roswell starlet Shiri Appleby as new interns. Hmm... didn't House try adding a bunch of whipsmart new docs last season? Look how well that turned out. Anyway, given that the show has become increasingly reliant on having everyone hook up with each other (yeah, we get it, John Stamos and Linda Cardellini are attractive... does that mean they need to sleep with everyone?) we're sure these four newbies will fall victim to the charms of the dreamy Gates or Neela's pretty innocent seeming glare. Though the gals will probably also be subjected to some inappropriate comments and leering from Morris as well.
But do we really need four more new characters to follow? (I realize this is rhetorical since I'm probably one of the few people left on earth who is still watching this show... I just can't stop myself, it is like a bad habit I can't kick.) With some of the old guard (and by old guard I mean people who have been around like five of the umpteen seasons since there are no original regulars still on the game) on their way out and only committed to a few episodes, they need to add people, but why not instead focus on Frank or Haleh, supporting people we've seen for years but still don't really "know." Is it because they aren't sexy enough? Probably, since I can't see Chuny and Haleh suddenly catching the eye of new resident playboy Dr. Brenner, even if they offered up a threesome. Well, maybe then because he's seemingly this shows version of McSteamy.
Given that I've been watching all these years, I'm pretty damned sure by the end of the series run, at least one of these interns will be dead or dying from some tragic and unexpected accident involving an ambulance, helicopter, car crash, random gunman or building collapse. One will have quit from the stress of it all, or asked for a transfer to another part of the hospital because they were sexually harassed. One will have slept with at least two Chicago General staffers. And one will get inappropriately promoted to a position beyond their status because they seemed just so damned eager and really proved themselves (or because other people quit and they needed more help). Good times. Can't wait for the predictability of the final season of this show to start, mostly because the words final season fill me, and my long-suffering TiVo with a little glee.
