Emcee of His Domain

First, Jay-Z sampled the musical Annie in "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)." Then, Danger Mouse mixed Jay-Z's Black Album and the Beatles' White Album to make The Grey Album. Now, in the latest bit of what I like to call "stunt-sampling" (although there may actually be a word for it that I am not cool enough to know), a new, free rap album is available for download that samples music and quotes from Seinfeld. No, it's not Judgement day, although if you want to start praying, go right ahead. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Now, I know what you're thinking: Seinfeld and rap go together like country clubs and crunk juice. And I will admit that the combination is a little jarring. But while rapper Wale (pronounced Wall-AY, for those who are as clueless as I was) makes plenty of Seinfeld references, the tracks on The Mixtape About Nothing are all about the rap industry, racial politics and how much he likes women, and they're pretty awesome. The only downside is having to listen to Michael Richards' famous on-stage faux-pas as an introduction to "The Kramer," a song about the N-word in general, if not that event in specific. (All of the song titles start with "the," like episodes of the TV show.) Luckily, the quality of the track is worth the NSFW discomfort, and it ends with a clip of Richards apologizing, for good measure.

The funniest bit, however, is a call-in from Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (currently kicking ass on The New Adventures of Old Christine) in which she admits that she's doing it to be cool in the eyes of her children. Download the album here.
