So there I was, sitting in a cab on the way to an appointment, watching the little news station on the taxi TV (we've come a long way, baby) when I see this commercial. I literally was like "What? You've got to be freakin' kidding me!" Which earned me kind of a strange look from the driver. Anyway, someone with corporate synergy on the brain has gone one step too far and come up with a commercial that promotes both The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and the Olympics.
The whole thing starts out like a tourism ad for the lovely country of China and city of Beijing and then Brendan Fraser's mug comes on screen and he starts yelling about the undead coming back to life or whatever. So far, whatever, commercial for The Mummy, whatever. But then inexplicably hordes of skeleton corpses start running through the sand and then it morphs into Olympic athletes running. Which is followed by a fistfight that turns into an Olympic boxing match and a Michelle Yeoh backflip becomes a gymnastics routine. Repeat with more movie footage/sports clips blending into each other.
Morphing has come a long way since that Michael Jackson "Black or White" video, but I don't know if this was how it was meant to be used. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy those cheesy Mummy movies and I love the Olympics more than any person really should, but I don't think that they necessarily should be promoted together. It is just bizarre and confusing and ends with the message that this summer "The world will turn to China, let the adventures begin." Um. OK. My head hurts.
