Annals Of Stuntcasting, Can't They Just Leave Well Enough Alone?, Good Things Come In Small Packages?
Stuntcasting Strikes Again
Like it or not, as long as networks will never be satisfied with having a modest but decent enough audience for a series, stuntcasting will always be with us. So like it or not, Christina Ricci will appear in three upcoming Saving Grace episodes this season. I don't really understand why, of all the shows in the world, Ricci chose that one to guest on, considering she's pretty famous and could probably get a spot on a much bigger show, but maybe she's a fan. And working with Holly Hunter is nothing to sneeze at, so that may be the reason as well.
She's set to play a detective who temporarily partners with Grace while her regular partner, a character who I swear to you is named Ham Dewey (Ham!), takes a leave of absence. I don't watch the show, so I don't know if this leave of absence was already part of the show's story arc, or if it's some really mean "Get outta town for a while! We got a real star coming!" type of deal, but I would assume it's the former.
I like Christina Ricci as an actor, and I think she's very cute, but I just don't buy her in really physical roles. It's mostly due to her tiny stature, which was also problematic for Gillian Anderson on The X-Files, whose character was once knocked out cold when a middle-aged Harriet Harris merely bumped into her. I think Ricci is much better suited for comedy than action, to be honest, so this cop role will certainly be a stretch. Nonetheless, I'm as susceptible to stuntcasting as the next guy, so I will be tuning in to Saving Grace for the first time in my life just to see if she can pull it off. It's a vicious circle, I tell you.
