Apparently Veronica Mars genius Rob Thomas wasn't totally crazy for leaving shoo-in hit 90210 to go work on a remake of his short-lived comedy Cupid. The romantic comedy, which stars the dreamy Bobby Cannavale and showkiller-in-desperate-need-of-a-hit Sarah Paulson (she of Studio 60, Leap of Faith, American Gothic and Deadwood), is Thomas's new twist on a guy who thinks he's cupid and the therapist who thinks he's nuts. It's now got a potential spot on the midseason lineup along with four other new shows.
While I'm sort of excited about Castle (which had me at the words "stars Nathan Fillion") and The Unusuals (starring Michael from Lost, Harold Perrineau, and Joan of Arcadia, Amber Tamblyn), I can't help but notice that the premises for these two hour long comedies sound remarkably similar. In Castle, Fillion (swoon) is a crime-fighting novelist who somehow uses the power of the pen to help the NYPD solve homicide cases. Could be fun, right? But then there's The Unusuals, which is a series about a quirky crew at the NYPD. Hmm... does the world need for two comedies about the NYPD?
There's also Better Off Ted, which stars some guy named Jay Harrington, who was on a lot of shows, but most recently on a season of Desperate Housewives that I didn't watch. Harrington's an office worker who dreams of making it big. Ugh, sounds like a terrible premise, but it stars Andrea Anders (who was delightfully witty on the cancelled-too-soon comedy The Class) and Mrs. Ellen DeGeneres herself, Portia de Rossi, who has been severely lacking from the world of funny since Arrested Development was ripped from the airwaves. Also going for it is that it was created by the guy who created another charming workplace comedy Andy Richter Controls the Universe, though in fairness, he also created the appalling Life on a Stick... not every one's a winner. Hopefully the stars will align for this one.
And then there's the final pickup, a comedy that I should be looking forward to, because I think Alyssa Milano is in need of a new job, but I'm not, because it just sounds boring. Milano's fronting Single With Parents about a woman "juggling her family, friends and career." I don't know why shows about parenting usually send me running for the hills, but they just do. Maybe because at the end of the day of juggling my own friends, family and career, I don't really want to watch someone else do it in a more cute and comical way. Even if it is Samantha Micelli.
