How I Met Your Mother at Barnes & Noble

While doing a little bit of research for a How I Met Your Mother article, I stumbled across a tidbit of news about the show I missed when it first popped up -- there will be a book of the Bro Code. Yes, the set of bylaws that Barney, Ted, Marshall and bros everywhere adhere to will finally be available in one handy tome, comprising all 86-plus tenets -- which will be a great relief to fans who have been compiling their own (incomplete) lists on the Internet, as well as guys who are unsure whether it's okay to hook up with their friends' moms. (According to Article 89, it is not.)

The book, which will be out in November, is being written by show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas along with the show's writers, including Barney's ghostblogger, Matthew Kuhn. And while they all certainly deserve credit, my concern is who will be listed as the "author" on the cover, because if there was ever a tie-in book that deserved to be credited to a fictional character, it's this one. Will it be Neil Patrick Harris' Barney Stinson, who regularly dispenses the law in hilarious sound bites, or will it be his ancestor, Barnabas Stinson, who volunteered to write the Code after George Washington totally codpiece-blocked Ben Franklin in his pursuit of a wench? (The eye contact during a devil's three-way certainly didn't help matters.)

Because according to Barney, he didn't write the Bro Code -- it was written by Barnabas, although it must certainly have been updated since then. After all, who in 1776 was revealing sports scores before a bro could see the game on TV, or had a step-mom who wore leopard-print clothing? Barney must have written some (or all) of these laws, and gotten them made into a really nice leatherbound book so he could deny they were his doing. So whom should we believe: lying TV characters or fake historical flashbacks? Either way, the publisher can't really go wrong. On the one hand, you've got a nice picture of Neil Patrick Harris on the back cover, and on the other hand, you've got a picture of Neil Patrick Harris in a powdered wig. Either way, sales are going to be legen -- wait for it -- dary.
