The 29 footprint fireworks that lead up to the Bird's Nest Stadium and really kicked off the most spectacular Opening Ceremonies ever weren't exactly real. Well, they did actually have footprint shaped fireworks that tromped through Beijing up to the stadium, but they were hard to capture on film so they went with computer imagery for viewers on the TV for the sake of prettiness. It was really all about the aesthetics for us at home. Isn't that the most important thing? Who cares if it is real? When I heard this news I actually kind of shrugged it off. Big deal. If they can get 2008 people to hide underneath boxes and move in sequence, they should have been able to find a way to make this work, but I was willing to let it slide. But then...
I find out that the programmers at NBC have sort of been lying to my friends on the West Coast by telling them they were watching events (like gymnastics and beach volleyball) live, when in truth they are tape delayed. They are getting these big live events (which are actually aired live on the east coast, even though it is the crack of dawn in Beijing) during the Mountain or Pacific Primetime broadcasts, which are up to three hours later than the actual "live" airing. Either they need to remove the "live" graphic from these broadcasts, because that's just misleading and deceitful, or they need to figure out a way to air them actually live. If they can redo the bulk of the Olympic event schedule to be early in the morning, they can figure out how to make this work with the affiliates... or at least give them the options. I was again willing to shrug this one off. But then...
I learn that the cute little girl who sang so beautifully during the opening ceremonies in a touching patriotic song about China, was lip-syncing. You might as well just tell me that Michael Phelps is a cylon now. Go ahead. I'm bracing myself. The reason for the Ashlee Simpson-ness of it all was because the adorable little girl 9-year-old who we all saw was actually prettier than the 7-year-old girl who actually gave voice to the tune. What, was the 7-year-old a troll? It's just like what happened with C & C Music Factory. Apparently the organizers thought it was a fine idea, that it was the best way to represent their country or whatever. Yeah, right. You keep telling yourself that. I'm going to be watching those closing ceremonies with a certain degree of skepticism now. I'm just dreading to find out what story is going to come out next.
