Is That a Microphone In Your Duck a l'Orange, or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

Reports are everywhere today that previously confidential C.I.A. files are being made public, and they reveal that, among other things, famed French-style chef Julia Child was a spy! Jigga what???? Indeed, it seems that one of the world's most visible TV personalities (and a bona fide giantess at over six feet tall) once worked undercover for the U.S. government as an OSS operative. She and her cohorts apparently "studied military plans, created propaganda, infiltrated enemy ranks and stirred resistance among foreign troops."

The news, it turns out, isn't all that new. In interviews, Child talked openly about her unique involvement in the war effort, but never before were her claims corroborated by official documentation. In case you care, other note-worthy secret agents that the documents have named include "Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a historian and special assistant to President Kennedy; Sterling Hayden, a film and television actor whose work included a role in The Godfather; and Thomas Braden, an author whose Eight Is Enough book inspired the 1970s television series" as well as "John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Quentin and Kermit Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police." Wow. What a random and frankly B-list array of vaguely famous-ish people! What, were folks like Bing Crosby and Ava Gardner too busy to aid in assuring the future safety of our nation?

Not like I needed another reason to love me some Julia Child, but come on?! What a rad dame! All that and she had time to learn the art of fricassé? Talk about multi-tasking.
