This past summer, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army continued the big-screen exploits of Mike Mignola's devilish comic-book character, and the film was promoted with commercials putting Big Red into some well-known TV shows, including Chuck, American Gladiators and Inside the Actor's Studio. And while director Guillermo Del Toro wants to come back to do one more big screen entry, we may see Hellboy on the small screen again before that happens. And I ain't talking about Ron Perlman being in Sons of Anarchy, either.
Deep in the heart of a recent Variety article, it was mentioned that, in order to fill the gap between the second and third movies (del Toro has to knock out two Hobbit films before he'll get to Part 3), Universal may be interested in creating a TV series, presumably a live-action one. First of all: How much would that kick ass? And secondly: How the hell would that be possible? True, Angel and Buffy had people dressed like demons in pretty much every episode, but the main characters were all pretty much human. What sort of difficulties does having your two lead actors (Hellboy and Abe, presumably) in fairly heavy make-up raise? I expect the producers would have them keep their shirts on most of the time to keep costs down.
My big question is what the show would be about. Would it go back to the founding of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense? Would it bounce around between young and old Hellboy, like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles did? Would we see the discovery of Abe Sapien? Would it cross over with Selma Blair's new show, Kath & Kim? Would they still fight Cthulhu-type monsters, or more manageable, cost-efficient paranormal events that you might see on an episode of The Dresden Files? Can there be an episode where Hellboy tries out a holographic cloaking device that makes him look like Ron Perlman, which allows him to live out his lifelong dream of joining a biker gang? I, for one, can't wait to find out.
