Yesterday I was super thrilled to learn of Samantha Bee's foray into the world of network sitcoms. So imagine my glee at the news that my very favorite fat-suit wearing, cheese-ball making, bunny rabbit owning comedienne Amy Sedaris is returning to the small screen with another TV show. Funny ladies take mainstream television by storm! Huzzah!
Details of the show are nonexistent. As in there's no title, no network home, and no specifics as to what the plot or characters will revolve around. The only info that has been revealed thus far is the following: 1) Paul Dinello, who co-wrote and co-directed much of Sedaris's fantabulous claim to fame Strangers With Candy is on board, 2) Sedaris super-fan David Letterman is going to produce the joint as he did the SWC movie-film and 3) the premise was derived from an idea Sedaris had six years ago, which is somehow relevant now, hence all the activity.
Who wants to play a guessing game? Based on my extensive research -- which entailed visiting VH1's I Love the New Millenium website and reading about some of the pop culture phenomena to have been borne in the year 2002 -- I have come up with a list of possible inspirations:
1) Reality TV takes off with the help of The Osbournes
2) Liza Minelli allegedly beats up David Gest
3) Avril Lavigne assaults our ear holes
4) Bush introduces us to the color-coded terror alert system
5) Botox goes mainstream
6) My Big Fat Greek Wedding comes out
Knowing Amy, her show is some amalgam of all of the aforementioned. An aging, addled singer gets tons of plastic surgery and then tries to mount a comeback by landing a reality show which chronicles the making of her new "pop-punk" album, the title of which is "Orange Alert." Oh, and to keep her on track and out of rehab, she lives with her extended, crazy Greek family. Sounds likely, eh? Certainly no more outlandish than a narrative involving a 46-year-old high school freshman with a checkered past and a propensity for unusual pets. What do you think the show will be about?
