Dear My Own Worst Enemy: Put the Alias DVDs Down! I'll admit that I have been enjoying the check-your-brain-at-the-door fun that is My Own Worst Enemy for its spy capers and my '90s Christian Slater fangirl nostalgia, but last night's episode had a few too many things in it that I guess were supposed to be Alias references, but just came off as plain old theft to me. First of all, when Janus calls Henry at home, they identify themselves as "Sal's Pizza." Sound familiar? When the CIA called Sydney in Season 1 they identified themselves as "Joey's Pizza." Would it have killed them to pick another cover? Maybe a Chinese place? A dry cleaner maybe? Oh, and that's not all.

Edward's spy sidekick Raymond's field callsign is "Boy Scout." So was Michael Vaughn's, for a portion of Alias. I mean, honestly! I will admit that it's kind of funny that Vaughn's callsign was chosen because that's exactly what he is, while Raymond couldn't be more of an anti-Vaughn if he tried, but couldn't they have been a little more creative? Name him "Ken Doll" or something. Especially when it's mixed in with the first Sal's Pizza instance, Tony's stuttering, stammering tech man with all his crazy op-tech that is more and more Marshall Flinkman by the minute, and the fact that Christian Slater played a nerdy fall guy on Alias, I think they need to start making an effort to distance themselves from the other series. Homage is nice, but there's pastiche and then there's what the hell, show! Think of your own stuff! Anyone else irked by the similarities?
