I was in the middle of painstakingly carving my Doctor Who pumpkin last night (see picture for more proof that I'm a big nerd), featuring David Tennant and the Tardis when my husband looks up from his computer to tell me that the 10th doctor officially announced he'd be leaving the show. I had heard the rumblings that he might be leaving and the speculation about who might be the 11th doctor, but since nothing had been set in stone, I didn't want to believe it was true. Now that the adorkable Tennant has confirmed it, I guess I have to let this news sink in.
Tennant is finishing out his run with the upcoming Christmas Special (which will not include J.K. Rowling) and then he'll do the four specials in 2009 (which won't feature Prince Charles). And I'm trying to be fine with it. I am. Really. I was skeptical when Christopher Eccelston left, but immediately fell in love with Tennant's portrayal. But I'm just extra wary because Russell T. Davies (who revived the series) is also departing at the same time as Tennant... and there's only so much change a person like me can handle.
Don't get me wrong, I adore Steven Moffat (who is taking over for Davies) for his work on Coupling (the good, UK version) and for giving me recurring nightmares with the Who episode "Blink." I will never look at statues the same way again. And I'm sure that they'll find someone really talented to take over for Tennant, they seem to have an amazing casting department over there... but still, it's a lot of change, all at once, and it is giving me mild panic attacks. But... at least I've got my pumpkin to comfort me.

Your pumpkin is amazing, my carving skills still look like a 10 years old. I too am heartbroken about Tennant leaving and am not sure I can bring myself to watch a Tennantless who. However, I got over Eccelston leaving and Billie Piper, so I have faith it will all turn out good.
I'm so shocked hearing the news. Ah, I can't wrapped my head around it.
Tennant made a fine old doctor (no matter that he was young), and I shall miss him when he goes. That won't however, impede my enjoyment of what's to come as much as might the departure of Uncle Rusty. Still ... mystery and adventure, eh? That's the ticket! (And my vote for Eleven goes to Robert Carlisle!)
I've been changing Doctor's since Tom Baker, some I liked and some I didn't. I wasn't overly impressed with Eccelston, but I adored Tennant. Hopefully the next "re-generation" brings another pleasant surprise.

You know, I never quite got the hang of David Tennant, perhaps because I'd seen him as Barty Crouch in Harry Potter beforehand, which I really didn't like. Plus, I was over the moon for Christopher Eccleston, who I thought was a far more capable actor. But who knows who they'll get to replace Tennant. It might be someone fantastic!
First off: that pumpkin > any other pumpkin ever. I would pay good money for that pumpkin.
I'm just like you: trying desperately not to be horribly disappointed Tennant's stepping down. Watching his announcement helps a little - that man is too cute for words. If David Morrissey does well in the Christmas special, I think I'll be endorsing him to be Eleven. If not, I'll wait a while, since I honestly can't think of anyone else I'd like to play him.
I'll miss Tennant but he had a good long run, so now is as good a time as any for him to leave. He was a brilliant Doctor and will be remembered as one of the greats for sure. My vote for Eleven goes to - James Callis! He was practically made for this role and I need to see him on my screen after BSG finishes next year.
Meh, I vote David Bowie for 11.
Tennant was my first doctor. I never got the hoopla about Eccleston. I love DT and can't imagine Doctor Who without him. But this is a longstanding tradition and I respect Tennant's reasoning for leaving. Still, I'm getting all choked up just thinking about it. First Donna and now this. Ouch. I'll be buying all his seasons on DVD for sure!
I'm just worried that RTD will be the one to hire the new Doctor. I fear he'll Scorched Earth the show, so no one can make a success of it without him.
Honestly, I'd be surprised if Moffat hasn't already chosen the next Doctor.
As much as DT was wonderful as the Doctor (and CE was great too!), I think it IS time for a regeneration (which is only fitting with RTD's exit as well). Any of the suggestions by BBC Anglophile & others could be a good fit (I think Eddie Izzard would be perfect myself). There's someone else that was mentioned awhile ago amongst the fans that I forgot about (along with the hilarious notion of Jennifer Saunders- of which if that did happen, would most likely last one episode, maybe for for a "Children In Need" special).
PS. Yer jack-o-lantern is AMAZING!
PPS. I will never turn my back on a statue ver again EITHER!
The pumpking absolutely rocks!
We've had two awesome Doctors in a row (and both of them hot, too, in my opinion), so I'm hoping the next doctor will also be awesome, and hot. (But in a different way, just as DT was hot in a different was from CE.)
I heard that Richard Coyle (Jeff from "Coupling") was being considered. I loved him on "Coupling," but who knows.
I just hope ... and I know this makes me sound like a huge sexist, which I promise I'm not ... I hope they don't do something silly like make the Doctor a woman. I suppose it could work but it doesn't sound good to me.
It'll be interesting to see who they get. It's hard to imagine they'll ever top DT, but then I thought that about CE, too.
I started watching when Eccleston was in the role, but I fell in love with Tennant's handling of the role. Still, regeneration is what keeps the show going, so I'm looking forward to seeing who they get next (and I can't WAIT to see what Stephen Moffat does with the show, I love all his episodes! Nobody's mentioned 'The Girl in the Fireplace' yet!)
My picks for a potential new Doctor would be Eddie Izzard or Simon Pegg.

I'm not entirely surprised to see Tennant stepping down, sad as it is, though I would have liked to have seen him do at least some of a series with Moffat. On the other hand, new production team, new doctor, new exec producer Moffat (Press Gang! Blink! Coupling!) could be interesting... Who knows what we'll get.
I have a bit of a soft spot for Patterson Joseph, though he's denying any connection to Who just now. James Nesbitt has stated it won't be him. Rupert Penry-Jones could be good, if maybe a little too well known to be cast. It might be nice to have someone less well known as the Doctor, with a well known companion.
This is terrible. I will not shoot the messenger...I will just say this has brought down my month. Luckily the month is near its end. I fear it will take much longer to recover from this news. Please keep us updated.

Tragic leaving, DT will be sorely missed. My vote for 11 goes to Hugh Laurie.
Aw, my flatmate told us the news last night, just as we were getting ready to go out. I had no idea that anyone else in the room was a DW fan until they started wailing.
Anyway, I'm seriously going to miss DT, BUT I'm hopeful that they're going to cast someone just as fantastic.
i.e, Eddie Izzard, who is God.
My kids and I love Doctor Who. I hated to see Eccleston go, but Tennent filled the Time Lord's sneakers perfectly. I will say that this past season was a little weak, so the series might could do with a little shake up in the regeneration department. My vote is for Eddie Izzard. Just think, the first transvestite time lord. Excuse me, the first EXECUTIVE transvestite time lord.
I just hope that Eleven gets to have a real emotional arc, instead of Ten's aggravating stasis.
And as for everyone who is feeling weird about the change, I've been through six of these transitions. You'll be fine.
I hate it that Tennant's leaving, too, though I was also an Eccleston devotee who immediately fell in love with the Tenth Doctor. Still, with the Rose storyline wrapped up, David might as well go. The magic was about their chemistry in large part.
Oh! And my vote for number eleven: JJ Feild.
Let me get this out of the way...
WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Okay. I'd heard rumors, but went into denial. I'll really miss him, but I can understand wanting to move on. And I'm not too worried with who'll be the next Doctor. They've been doing great with casting the past couple of years.
I'm sad to see Tennant go, but I'm sure they'll get someone good to replace him, and I'm really sure Moffat do a good job, but what I'm really worried about is that this will be the 11th Doctor, and Time Lords are only supposed to have 13 lives, so they're getting close (that's why Eccleston ticked me off--don't hire anyone who won't make at least a three year commitment to the role).
Ah, well. At least, we with Tennant leaving we can also stick a fork in the torturous Rose/Dr melodrama. Maybe, good things will come. . . Donna?
I hope we get to see Ten turn into the badass that River Song said he is. (Love him now, that would be even better.)
Rupert Penry-Jones -- the fanwank would be astronomical. *Fans self*
I would love Colin Salmon as 11. (He was Dr. Moon in Silence in the Library).
My pick for number 11: Jack Davenport.
He can do the drama, action and comedy; plus, he's a pal of Steven Moffat (Coupling).
To me, he's a perfect marriage of the best of Eccleston and Tennant.
I never felt Tennant did anything beyond not detracting from the show--but that is an achievement in itself. It'll be fun to see who they come up with next.
Sad to see Ten go but I'm sure we'll get another excellent Doctor.
The best suggestion I have read so far for a replacement is Kevin McKidd from Journeyman (and currently Grey's Anatomy). He could be a ginger Doctor!
I heard Moffat was leaning towards Peterson Joseph, making him the second actor to appear on DW and then become a Doctor after Colin Baker. My knowledge of Brit actors is practically nil, but I know I'll be happy with the final choice, even as I miss Ten's manic nature.
Oh, and if Heroes is still around, do you think Tim Kring could talk Tennant into a three-episode gig? He wouldn't have to play the little brother of Claude Raines, but it would be fun to watch.
Although I loved Tennant as the Doctor, I must say, my major reason for being peeved is that we NOW ONLY HAVE 3 REGENERATIONS LEFT! Unless we send the Doctor off into Master land, we will be only able to do, say, 9-12 more years of Doctor Who.
ARGGGH! Unless, maybe, Jenny Who can carry on the tradition?
David Bowie for the Doctor!
Much as I adored Tennant, I still preferred Eccleston. And as to the RTD - Moffat? I'm glad to see change, because much as I adore the revived series, I think there was too much fanservice in the last season (the whole Rose thing was cheap and frankly, reduced her from an actual character to the role of a love interest. Way to go!)
My favourite episode in each series was the one (or ones) by Moffat. So I'm very much pleased to see him take over.
I think James Callis or Jamie Bamber(both from BSG) would be fantastic in the role.
becks - yes, it would be, but wouldn't it be fun too?
I too hope we get to see him turn into what River Song said he would be. Incidentally, how much of a coup would it be for the BBC if they managed to hire Alex Kingston to do some more work on Who...
IMO, Callis and Bamber are too well known for BSG to leave it behind immediately to go to another major sci-fi show. In a few years, possibly, but not right now.
The regenerations thing - there's been a few mentions before that it was limited by the time lords themselves, and as they are no longer around that could help...
How about Jemima Rooper as a companion, or Christina Cole?

Having said that, I would like to see Callis in Who, but I think he would be better as more of a morally dubious character. He could make quite a good Master actually, if John Simm didn't want to return.
I'm devastated. I thought Eccleston was superb but Tennant is freaking amazing in this role, absolutely marvelous. He's got the perfect balance of oddness, charisma, and intensity. I can't quite envision anyone else right now, but I have to say, someone mentioned David Morrissey, and I saw him onstage in London with Colin Firth and Elizabeth McGovern, and Morrissey was so amazing he stole the whole show. He's a fantastic actor and a real chameleon so I would tentatively like to see what he might do here. But on the other hand, Tennant is just a force of nature and nope... I'm still depressed.
I have no favorites so far. Well...maybe Paul Bettany but I don't think he would stay longer than 1 season and that would be a shame.
I hope they chose somebody totally different from Chris and David. Remember when David came on and he was amazing in such a different way that it was impossible to compare the two and you just had to fall in love with him although your heart for still aching for Chris? That's what I want, a COMPLETELY new Doctor.
As sad as I am to see Tennant go (see above), I'm not really bothered by the loss of RTD. Yes, he brought the show back, for which we should all be eternally grateful, but he did have a number of annoying habits which I won't be sorry to lose: the deus ex machinas (Rose in Parting of the Ways, and (ugh) Tinkerbell/Jesus Doctor in Last of the Time Lords); the whole Rose/Doctor thing, which just got plain annoying; the tendency to forget the title was Doctor Who, not The Companion of Doctor Who (yes, I know Moffat wrote Blink, but that's not the same thing); and the fact that when he wanted to make some sort of political or social commentary, he was about as subtle as a brick in the face.
What, what... WHAT?!
Well, that sucks. I loved David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and I'm really sad to see him go.
So very very sad. I did actually leave DW when Peter Davison left. I hope I'm not reduced to that again. I love the James Callis idea, but I continue to want Chiwetel Ejiofor as Eleven.
Chiwetel as the Doctor? My God that is BRILLIANT!!!! I would so love that!
Chiwetel Ejiofor gets my vote. He falls under my "Firefly" rule. Actors from "Firefly" are automatically cool. Everyone else has to work at it.
They're talking Tom Ellis on Digital Spy at the moment, which seems alright, though I haven't really seen him act. I'm still saying David Morrissey, though that's mostly because I want him and Tennant to break into song (never seen Blackpool? Watch it.)
And - now here's the part where I turn into a real geek - the Master was granted another cycle of regenerations by the Time Lord Council on Gallifrey, so theoretically, the Doctor could at least have another fifteen regenerations left in him after Ten becomes Eleven. The limit was probably just for population control, since - as I think Four said (could be wrong)- Time Lords can basically live forever. How cool am I right now?
I’m not sure where you're getting your information, but good topic
It’s really a great and helpful piece of info
