Stop the Madness: Another David E. Kelley Legal Show Is On the Way

I know there are people out there who adore Boston Legal and while I'm not a fan, I don't hate it. I just really can't watch it regularly. It's a perfectly fine show, but I've had my fill of most legal dramas (well, unless they are f'ed up like Damages). Which is why I'm completely unenthusiastic about the news that David E. Kelley is making yet another legal series for next season on NBC, with the hopes that it could take the spot of the long-lingering and finally being put out to pasture ER.

But does the world need another legal series from this man's mind? We've already had Ally McBeal, Boston Legal and The Practice, and they all had really long runs. (There was also girls club, but the less said about that the better.) So that's enough. Let's take a little break. How about going back to some other occupations that he's already done -- doctors (Chicago Hope, Doogie Howser, M.D.), or teachers (Boston Public), or sheriffs (Picket Fences), or detectives (Snoops), or wedding planners (The Wedding Bells)? Actually, that last one was terrible, so let's not return to it. The world doesn't need another quirky legal drama on the air right now. We've already got Eli Stone.

Besides, the premise of this one sounds totally unoriginal. There's a father and daughter and they are both lawyers. Yeah. I saw that show. It was called Courting Alex and starred Jenna Elfman. And it wasn't very good, though I watched it all because my love of Ed's Josh Randall is just that powerful. Kelley's series will likely be a tad bit more serious (though judging by Legal and Ally maybe not), but probably won't feature the delightfully cantankerous Dabney Coleman. Or maybe it could?

I mean, Kelley's got his thing and he's sticking to it. And if anyone can make it work and make the masses like it, I'm sure its him. But just why, why, why does it have to be another legal show? How about accountants or astronauts? They are totally underrepresented on the television landscape.
