Top Design: It's Out There

by Katharine Trendacosta October 24, 2008 1:01 PM

The more seasons a reality show competition has, the more absurd and obscure the challenges of each season become. In an attempt to avoid repeating themselves, they lose all sense of perspective. America's Next Top Model is the quintessential example of this. By the tenth season (or cycle, or rotation, or whatever they call it), Tyra was dressing the contestants up in meat bikinis. Bikinis of meat. I've never laughed so hard as I did watching girls who barely eat get tricked out in pork-chop two-pieces.

Which brings me to the special case of Top Design. I can't help but feel that it has nowhere to go. It's only on its second season and it's already dipping heavily into the weird for its challenges. Plus, like a drunk soap opera matron, the challenges swing from utterly normal to completely insane with no warning. One week, the contestants are designing homes for bachelors, the next they have to create a fashionable nuclear bunker for a post-apocalyptic world. Because my biggest concern for my nuclear bunker? Is that it's well-designed. This really hit me in episode seven of this year, when the designers had to create... Rooms of the Future! The show reached sublime heights when the designers had to justify their choices by describing the universe they had created for themselves. "In my world, everyone has a personalized pod. And this is mine." It just begs the question of what, exactly, is being tested by this challenge. They're not set designers, right? Or science fiction writers? Then what is going on?

Watch a short recap of "Room of the Future" below. Or, better yet, turn off the sound and watch it. Between the rooms and Kelly Wearstler's turban, it's like watching a piece of post-modern art. Then let us know what you think of the wacky challenges on this show.
