Could SNL Always Be in Three Minute Installments And/Or Involve Justin Timberlake?

Ostensibly Paul Rudd hosted this past week's Saturday Night Live, but the show was stolen right out from under him by one Mr. Justin Timberlake. The former host (whose "D**k in a Box" clip still cracks me up) showed up during Weekend Update to give a quick blow-by-blow of what next weekend's Thanksgiving-themed episode would have looked like if he hadn't had a scheduling conflict. This fast-paced rundown, followed by Timberlake's surprising cameo in heels and a leotard in a fake Beyoncé video shoot, were hands down the two funniest moments of the night. Rudd was forced to merely stand on the side lines and pretend to direct Sasha Fierce in the chaotic "Single Ladies" video while Timberlake shook and grinded (ground?) and got all the laughs.

Even Seth Meyers had to watch as Timberlake took over Weekend Update segment (see below), which ended with Timberlake standing on the Update desk and singing to an appreciative crowd. So while Timberlake got all the good laughs (and made me really sad that I won't get to see a new "Barry Gibb Talk Show," JT as James Dean with Bill Hader's incredible Vincent Price, or what exactly would happen if JT cut a hole in a turkey), Rudd was kind of a dud. It pains me to say that, as I normally adore him. But his subdued, low-energy vibe didn't really work with the live show. And why did the writers all think it was hysterical just to make him randomly make out with people or put him in awkward sexual situations? Funny once (in the digital short); not funny repeatedly (in the touchy-feely family or the guys at the cafe fighting over one girl skit). He probably deserved better sketches, or maybe he would have been better suited to a three-minute condensed version of the planned sketches, and the rest of the time he could have stood there with Justin while they both sported leotards and heels for no apparent reason. That would have made for good TV.

See the JT Update sketch below and then let us know what you thought of his surprise appearance and Rudd's hosting duties.
