Grey's Anatomy Ousts Gay Doc

In the infamous words of Law & Order's Serena Southerlyn, "Is this because I'm a lesbian?" Dr. Erica Hahn is getting summarily discharged from Seattle Grace only a week after she came out of the closet and saw the leaves through the trees or whatever. Rumors are that ABC didn't like her racy "south of the border" storyline with Callie. (Though Shonda Rimes insists in a statement that Smith wasn't fired because her character was a lesbian, and that they still have Callie, a lesbian, on the show). In her interview with EW's Ausiello, Brooke Smith says she was told they couldn't write for her character any more.

What? She's got the most potentially interesting character arc on the show. Are the powers that be crazy? While the speculation seems to be that they don't want to have a lesbian relationship on this show, I think there is some credence to the fact that the writers just don't know how to handle Hahn. She's a total bitch snapping at interns and threatening to cut Meredith's heart out with a steak knife (my personal favorite moment of this season), to the hot sensual doc having a feisty relationship filled with sex and tears. It's like she's Jekyll and Hyde sometimes (maybe Smith could get a role as one of those Christian Slater-esque kind of agents on My Own Worst Enemy).

They've taken this strong woman and made her so weak. So needy that after her girlfriend comes in and reveals that she went to her ex-boyfriend and had sex (twice!) to see if she really liked boy parts instead of lady bits, she just kind of shrugs it off. This after she had this emotional outburst and put her heart out on her sleeve. And yet when they put her in her lab coat she's all take no prisoners.

Clearly, they just are clueless over there. And maybe it is that they don't know how to write this lesbian storyline (though given all of the bed-hopping exchanges that have happened on that show, I'm really surprised that this one has thrown them for a loop) because what had a lot of potential has been pretty much dull. The only highlights have been Hahn's "leaf speech," and Bailey explaining the rules of "vajayjayland." When everyone else is in the throes of hot affairs and tossing their tops off in the on-call rooms and making out in elevators with their flavor of the week, you'd think there'd be room for some sexy moments between Callie and Erica. After practically all of last season was spent with them flirting and toeing the line of this storyline, and lots of innuendo filled talk, I thought the actual hook-up was a letdown. Seriously, this is subject matter for a highly-rated network TV show to tackle and it has been awkward and boring. To me that's the bigger issue. This is Grey's Anatomy! The only reason I keep watching this show is for the romantic entanglements, and I want them to be steamy.

Plus, if the firing was because they were afraid of having a lesbian storyline, why would they cast Melissa George to play a supposedly bisexual character? Who I'm guessing would hook up with Callie... or Mark... or both. An idea I find totally awful in principal because I just won't ever be able to see her as anything but the exceedingly irritating Lauren Reed on Alias. Is this just an attempt to bring in a younger and (arguably) prettier model? Though new rumors sparking around say that perhaps George's character will no longer be bisexual, which kind of jibes with Shonda's statement about how they don't just want to replace Hahn with another lesbian.

I've got a feeling that I'm going to be super annoyed after watching this Thursday's episode (which will mark Brooke Smith's last appearance). Your thoughts? Do you think the network didn't want to deal with a gay character? Do you think the writers just really didn't know how to handle Hahn? Do you even care? Let us know.

i agree that they weren't writing her very well, but i still thought it was a giant step forward as far as not retreading the same old crap in the way they approach relationships. plus, i've really liked brooke smith ever since series 7. this sucks.

Networks like gays... as long as they are sexless. Look at what happened to Willow and Tara on Buffy: A whole year of flirting and coming out and will they or wont they and the episode that Amber Benson becomes a series regular, they kill her off.
Networks like gay like Will Truman. Sexless representations of a segment of the poplulation they don't think the rest of the country can understnd well enough to accept.
It's sad really, I liked Dr. Hahn

Well technically Callie is bisexual (hence the whole sleeping with Sloane and Hahn bit) and the rumor is that they are de-gaying Melissa George's character, so the lesbian factor seems to be prettey much down to zero again. Guess somebody there was really getting cold feet!

I thought they were being overly crude in the whole storyline. I loved the "leaves and trees" speech. But Hahn was still blind not to see how semi-repulsed Callie was. Callie's discomfort was too uncomfortable for the audience. I'm with Sloan - 2 lesbians enjoying a relationship is awesome. One of them obsessing about whether it was ooky or not is pathetic. The storyline turned pathetic, to the detriment of Hahn. Shame on Grey's for not making this a better storyline.

I think this whole thing is alarmingly offensive. Between the gay storylines getting purged from my favorite show and the possibility that Prop 8 passes here in California, it's a bad time to be a gay person. Fuck ABC!

I think it's a shame they're firing Smith. I don't like the Hahn/Callie storyline (sorry, it's boring and a little creepy), but I really like Hahn the hardboiled bitch. If the lesbian storyline is an issue, couldn't they de-creepify it and keep Hahn around? She's a smart woman who spends less time than anyone else on the show dithering stupidly about her life, and she had so much potential. I'll be sorry to see her gone.

I am very sad and disapointed that they are getting rid of Erica. She was one of my favorite characters. Plus, keeping her around after a break up with Callie would have been an interesting path for both their characters as they used to be such good friends.

They're just a group of bad writers. They didn't know what to do with Hanh. And since their kiss in last season's finale, they haven't had a hot moment, imo. The chemistry's not that great. I think the actress is terrific, but I never liked Hanh much. I hope they do another lesbian storyline for Callie soon enough, although I do like her with Sloane...

I think it's really disheartening to see the most interesting storyline on Grey's dropped because of the homophobic attitudes that continue to pervade television. Yes, the story could have been written better. But it was still more interesting than the drivel that will surely replace it. Shonda Rhimes' statement on Brooke Smith's dismissal was borderline offensive, implying that they are somehow supportive of GLBT characters because Callie (described as a lesbian, which- pretty sure Callie wasn't a lesbian last episode, seeing how she enjoyed sex with men, but whatever, bisexuals, lesbians, tomato, tomahto apparently) is still on the show. I can't BELIEVE that she said it was because they didn't have chemistry. Well, Izzie and George were pretty much textbook "no chemistry" and yet both of them are still in starring roles. Huh. Go figure.

It's unlikely that Grey's will ever find the magic of Season 2 again. While I'm sure that Callie and Erica being together alienated some viewers, I don't understand how taking gigantic steps backward in visibility and equality is going to keep people watching or supporting the show.

We thot the whole story line was very stupid and we're happy it's going away. Get back to more patient story lines and skip the very unbelievable bed-hopping. Didn't like Erica anyway. Now--Christina and the former "Journeyman" -- that's a whole different story....

To be honest, I'm glad the Hahn/Callie story is coming to an end. I am *all* for seeing LGBT relationships explored on television but this particular one never rang true to me. Hell, even Marissa and Alex on the OC felt more authentic. I think the killer was having Callie/Sloane on the side, because not only was it making Erica look needy and pathetic; it also highlighted the fact that Sara Ramirez has far better chemistry with Eric Dane than Brooke Smith.

It's a shame because they're about to lose yet another one of their very best characters; they've already lost Addison and Burke, where are they going to go from here? Here's hoping that Dr. Owen will manage to stick around for a while, at least... he and Cristina would be great together.

I have absolutely no issues with this storyline ending or the character departing. I haven't liked Erica from the beginning, but I really took issue with the way this "couple" was written. We had zero inkling that Callie was interested in women, and it has reduced Callie to a character whose only purpose seems to be talking about "south of the border" and sex in general. What happened to Callie the surgeon, or Callie the intelligent woman? She was gone as soon as this started. "Brothers and Sisters" does gay storylines well- "Grey's" is not capable.

Does ABC need Roseanne to come back and battle for the lesbian storylines? It's been over a decade since she brought the lesbian relationship center stage with "the kiss," you'd think we'd get to "the sex" by now.

I really didn't like Callie/Hahn together...the writers did a terrible job putting the relationship together and have turned the relationship triangle that was Sloane/Callie/Hahn into this ridiculous mess. I will truly miss Smith on Grey's. I loved her character and love her acting. Perhaps they can put her on Brothers and Sisters...

It is a shame that they have seen fit to remove one of only two decent characters on the show (Bailey being the other). Hahn is a great character, Smith plays her well. The relationship wasn't well written, but a post-breakup arc would have been interesting. It would be better to kill off Meredith or Izzy, both are so annoying that I can't actually watch the show anymore. Thank heavens for recaps on TWoP!

the fact of the matter is, they wrote a character and going into it seemed to have no idea what to do with her, she was just supposed to be a plot bit in the denny/heart transplant episodes and then of course isaiah washington couldn't keep his mouth shut and they were short a cardio thorasic surgeon to round out their hierarchy of surgical avenues so they brought in second in her class, Erica Hahn and it was downhill from there. Personally, i was dismayed that this show brought on an intelligent, strong female character and screwed it up so badly, maybe because there can only be 1 dr. bailey, but also, how terrible that their message essentially was that any strong, independent, intelligent woman has to be a lesbian rather than just disinterested in jumping mark sloan's bones...i mean really? in addition, they made her un-likeable, she is horrible to meredith, bailey, and christina. there was so much potential but the fact of the matter was, this show was clueless how to write a new character that wasn't vulnerable like izzie or snarky like christina or damaged and complex like meredith or sophisticated like addison or awesome like bailey.

"perhaps George's character will no longer be bisexual": Ha, at first you were talking about T.A. Knight's character!

I like the storyline in principle, but in practice, they've repeated the same plot--"Hahn's really into it, Callie kinda isn't, Callie hurts Hahn's feelings, then they make up" for 3 or 4 episodes now. The writers don't know how to progress.

Even so, it would be ridiculous to get rid of Brooke Smith so entirely over that kind of impasse. What's going on?!?

It would have been so easy to get rid of the lesbian relationship last week: either have Callie decide she really prefers men, or that she is too uptight to go "south of the border," or have Hahn break it off after Callie cheats with Sloane. I think the last one would be the best, because Hahn would have her dignity that way.

It is true that some strong, independent career women act needy in personal relationships because they lack control, so that didn't bother me as much as the idea that after 40 years on earth, you can suddenly realize you're a lesbian. I don't know, maybe I'm naive, but I think you'd know, and maybe just be too strait-laced to act on it.

I think all the girl-on-girl action is something that TV can handle now (look at House), but a real lesbian relationship is beyond network TV's comfort zone now. That's why there are all the bisexual women--that way, the men can get off on it.

I also thought it was insulting that the bitchy, less-attractive woman (by this show's standards) was the lesbian, like, well she couldn't get a man anyway, so let's pair her off with the pudgy (albeit knockout pudgy) one.

I've heard outrage over the network's homophobia on other sites, but I'm not sure that's the reason for her firing. Had ABC just axed the lesbian thing, I'd be pissed. But they don't usually FIRE actresses because their on-screen relationship is ending. Sounds to me like she was fired for other reasons and is blaming the network. Brooke Smith also said in an interview that when she told Sara Ramirez the news, Ramirez was so shocked that it took her a few days to reply. Huh? That doesn't sound like shock to me.

That said...I'm not defending ABC's obvious squeamishness! Just that I don't think it's why she was let go.

The network suits made the decision to fire Brooke Smith in mid-September, BEFORE the season premiere. Not only are they killing the story, they've been lying to the viewing public by continuing to pretend that this storyline would be developed over the season. I am no longer watching this show. I had the same problem with this storyline as Kerry on ER "turning" gay. It's like we know the character and have insights into her personality for several seasons; then all of a sudden, she's a lesbian? Both with Erica and Callie--I liked that somebody assumed Erica was gay, Callie went 'whoa' maybe I shouldn't be hanging out with her, and then Erica said 'I'm awkward with people.' To have that translate into I want to have sex with you has bugged me.

Gay people don't like when others say they aren't "anti gay", so I apologize, but I really don't think I am--this just doesn't ring true to character for me. If I'd had lesbian friends who behaved like Callie and Erica before they found each other, maybe I'd feel differently.

Still, I liked Erica as the cardio replacing Burke...:(

I do agree with the point that it hasn't been written well.

However, I still think this sudden move is pathetic and cowardly. Sure, they're going to keep Callie, a terrific character in her own right, though she has also been written inconsistently. In keeping Callie, they can keep the appearance that it's not a homophobic move on ABC's part, but that only shows to me that they're more than happy to keep the character who can easily be written as bisexual (read: safe). That way, if they want, they can quickly put her back into a romantic or sexual relationship with a male character, and thus avoid offending anyone who doesn't want to see the 'icky' gay love. Meanwhile, they're getting rid of a strong female character, one of the few who has an actual spine on this program (a rare quality). Why not give the writers a little more time to develop and rework what they find isn't working with the character before dumping her? Brooke Smith is a talented actress. She's too good to just get rid of so quickly.

Actually, that's incorrect. BTVS S4 was filled with innuendo and flirting for Willow and Tara, and then in the fifth season, they kissed for the first time ever (The Body). After BTVS was moved to the CW network, Tara was killed close to the end of the sixth season. I doubt the decision to kill Tara off was influenced by outside pressure, i.e., the network executives.

As for Brooke Smith, I'm still waiting to find out exactly why was she fired. :( She was one of the few GA chracters I liked.

This is really stupid. Why did they start the story and THEN realize they couldn't hack it? It doesn't make sense. I didn't like Callie and Hahn as a couple and didn't really buy Callie as a woman who suddenly realized she might be a lesbian or bisexual and falling in love with a woman yet also seemingly repulsed by that woman. It would have made more sense story wise to just have Callie decide she wasn't gay after all but...whatever. There are too many characters on this show and none of them make any sense.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like there must be more to this story than just the gay angle. As I, and many others, have said, it would have been easy to end this relationship--how many other relationships on this show have fizzled out or blown up? Dozens, anyway.

The thing that bothers me, a heterosexual female, is that whenever a lesbian relationship is shown, there is an element of self-loathing to it. On this show, it was Callie who was turned off by it. Why wouldn't she know what feels good to a va-jay-jay--she's got one. And on House, it is evidence of 23 being self-destructive that she is using drugs, staying out all night, and...sleeping with women! Ooooo, she's hit rock bottom, all right. Wouldn't it be MORE self-destructive for her to sleep with dangerous men?

I'll watch Brooke Smith's last episode, pay attention to the companies sponsoring Gray's Anatomy, make note never to buy anything they sell, and then I'm done with that hot mess. I'm so sick of homophobia from what ought to be our friends. They want queers when they're dancing monkeys like Jack on Will and Grace, and they love to show up and pick up their GLAAD awards. Then they dump us like last week's trash. So, it's time to make them pay. Stop watching their shows. Don't support their sponsors. Let them fail. And gay actors? They ought to walk off that set.

It is shame that the suits are afraid of girl cooties. On the other hand, GA hardly has the depth to be able to do something interesting with homosexuality - steamy yes, meaningful no. The best relationship they have is with Joe, and that's in the background.

However, the worst news for me? (Yes I know I was living under a rock to only learn of this now) but Melissa George??? Really? She of the change-accents-midsentence, eyeliner=evol acting resume? Melissa George? Really? Why?

I have a hard time believing that ABC has a problem with a gay/lesbian storyline. Isn't ABC the network that one group (GLBT, I think) said has the most homosexual characters on it and I can't think of one character that's portrayed in a negative light (I could be wrong). It's the network that has Ugly Betty and Brothers and Sisters on which have out characters and deal squarely with their sexuality. If we were talking about other networks, like CBS or Fox I might think there's some truth to the claim that she was axed because of the gay story. But, I think I have to uncharacteristically defend ABC in this case because the claim doesn't fit with the rest of their line up.

Also, I have to wonder what they're thinking by bringing Melissa George back to do anything TV related. She's a reason to stop watching any show.

The storyline seemed to be going in one place from episodes 5.01/02 and 5.03 and then took a sharp turn when all Callie did was freak out. If all they were going to write was scenes where Callie freaked out, how could the actors ever portray an interesting chemistry? Their hands were tied because it was scripted that they act uncomfortable.

It seems pretty obvious that the writers knew this was going down from episode 4 on and wrote it thusly so they could give this excuse and wrote Hahn being extra mean to pave the way.

I think they just decided to throw in the lesbian part and then had no idea what to do with it, mainly because the character of Erica Hahn was portrayed as such a nut-crackin' beeotch. Her scenes with Torres were forced and silly and lame. There was no chemistry there whatsoever. I would prefer to see Hahn "softened" a little - not mad into a wuss like Meredith, but at least made a little more human before they explored her sexuality.

I was never a fan of the lesbian storyline between Hahn and Callie because I never felt like Callie had any chemistry with Hahn. I always felt she was using Hahn as a way to get over the failure of her marriage to George.
However I love Brooke Smith and think it's a shame that her character is being written off. She was one of the few sane, mature characters. It would have been interesting to watch her character evolve now that she has discovered her sexuality. Stupid network.

I just think its fishy that the announcement of Brooke Smith being fired comes on the DAY that people are being asked to vote on Prop 8 and similar propositions across the country to ban gay marriage. If she was axed two months ago, why make the announcement today? That to me says that ABC are making their stand. As for the other gay or Bi characters they have, Rebecca Romijn was demoted on Ugly Betty from regular to reccuring. They seem to be just slinking back into the safe ground of "Who us? Groundbreaking? No! We are safe and don't like to rock any boats!"

Just so you know, they put Benson in the credits on purpose because one of Joss Whedon's "dreams" was to kill a character on the first episode in which they were in the main credits...that's why that went down that way.

I do agree with your point to a degree...sometimes the shows play too much off of the stereotypes.

I did like Erica Hahn, but I hated how much she changed when she was with Callie.. it seemed more like it was two separate characters rather than one.

But the Callie/Erica storyline has been a bit strange, at first I was all for it, but the chemistry wasn't really there for me. With the exception of that first kiss in the elevator, the rest just... didn't do it for me.

How can this be the same network that has brought back Bianca and her gf/potential wife on All My Children. Their scenes are very touching and romantic.

All kinds of talk of gay marriage and having/adopting children.

Having said that, Callie and Erica seem to spend an awful lot of time convincing each other that they "have never done this before" and it is all so new. Just doesn't ring true.

Did anyone see Patrick Dempsey's appearance on Ellen? He brought out the statement he was "told to use" regarding any Callie/Erica questions.

The networks can get away with one daytime lesbian storyline, they kiss, they're romantic, maybe get married, then Bianca goes away for a couple of years. Then they'll bring her back for a few episodes when ratings are down. Repeat, one lesbian dies, or has a affair. Repeat.

And House's 13 storyline, while incredibly hot in the first 15 secs. is crap. I'm dying so I'll go have sex with as many women as I can, do drugs and party all night. It was so forced it gave me a headache. And two episodes later she'll be saved by a man and women will never be mentioned again.

Callie going to Mark for tips, that was the end for me. I think Callie/Hahn had the potential to have chemistry, but it was just ruined with the writing. They could have saved Hahn by writing about the aftermath and her revelations. I didn't feel like they were trying to make her needy and whiny tho (that's Meredith's job, apparently her only job on the show). I felt like they might be trying to work toward Hahn's demons and the reason she was so mean and nasty. But the writers.......

How can Nip/Tuck network/writers get away with basically writing and showing softporn. Put lesbians in a liplock or fully clothed in bed together and people freak. Have Julian McMahon's bare ass pumping away on some woman with a bag over her head and no complaints? And I think they had a lesbian storyline, but I don't watch the show, so not sure how they handle their lesbian storylines. But I someone told me one of them was crazy.

Honestly showing the sex is less important to me than writing about a relationship, a realistic one. But with that there has to be some interaction, not hairbrushing, like South of Nowhere went for awhile. Yes, it is a teen show and no I wasn't expecting sex. But I was expecting them to touch, other than by hairbrush alone. To be realistic they have to actually be in the same room and they have to touch at some point.

The networks tend to use bisexual (which Callie is, but apparently they decided to call her a lesbian anyway, so no GA does not have a lesbian on their show Shonda). to play it safe. If things get too hot, or any group complains, they can "go straight" again. And never have to speak of the "slip up" again....until sweeps.

No lesbians, only unsure or dying bisexuals on network tv after South ends, if their storylines don't abruptly end in the next week or so. And when the LWord ends there will only be lesbian cartoon characters left.

As a lesbian, I can't say I had an epiphany at 35. I always knew, but I pushed it very far away, married a man (and no, just because I had sex and married a man, does NOT make me bisexual, it means I was trying to be someone I wasn't), had kids and had no close female friends for a very long time. It wasn't until I surrounded myself with several close and accepting female friends that I was finally able to be honest about myself and my teenage secret past life. It had been so long since I had let myself be open that when I finally was with a woman again, it was kinda like Hahn's tree speech.

ABC firing Smith because of the Callie/Hahn relationship doesn't seem right to me - look at Brothers and Sisters or Ugly Betty. They haven't interfered with the gay relationships on those shows, right?

Another rumor I read, however, seems like it might hold more truth: that Smith was fired for being, supposedly, "unattractive." Which fits with them bringing on whatsherface - I'm kind of just assuming she's younger and "hotter," yes?

Still fucked up, of course. But just something different to ponder. If I hadn't stopped watching Grey's so long ago (I couldn't get through the Izzie/George shit without having a conniption) you could bet my sweet gay fanny I'd be giving up on it now.

Uggh, I hate when the curtian is stripped back and you see the network controlling the puppet strings. If it had been a creative decision from the writers, I would have been on board, but to see how the suits handed down this abrupt firing is disgusting. I hate being another set of eyeballs for those money hungry homophobic doucebags. My only option is to stop watching their crap.

Whats up this is kind of of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's fairly stressful to find threads like these since there is absolutely not much explanation currently offered on the the web about this. I would like to thank you for the time you spent to write this blog post. I'll stop by from time to time in hopes to read your new articles. Bye, bye, Jessica from nyc.

I do love the way you have presented this particular issue and it does present us a lot of fodder for thought. On the other hand, through what precisely I have personally seen, I simply wish as other comments pack on that people today keep on issue and in no way embark on a tirade of the news of the day. All the same, thank you for this superb point and whilst I do not necessarily concur with it in totality, I respect your point of view.
