So last night's episode marked the final appearance of Brooke Smith, aka Seattle Grace's Dr. Hahn. There's still speculation on if it was because her character was gay, or if they just didn't know how to deal with giving this ballbusting surgeon a romantic relationship, or if they just wanted a hotter, younger model. But whatever it was, I personally thought that the exit was abysmally handled. They should take a page from the ER handbook of how to write out characters, because when someone leaves this show, it's like bang and they are gone.
Burke's abrupt exit (though under completely different messy circumstances) was also kind of badly handled. He was there one minute and gone the next, with just a spoken line of dialogue about how he'd moved on to a different hospital. Hahn's final walk off didn't even seem like her final exit. She had an emotional outburst about Izzie, called Callie out for being a part-time lesbian (which she totally deserved after she slept with Sloane twice last week) and then just strode off into the darkness. If I hadn't known about all of the behind-the-scenes happenings, I would never in a million years have guessed that it was her final appearance. No big send-off. No commercial running before saying that "one doctor leaves Seattle Grace forever." No inclination that next week's episode will offer any resolution to the situation. It's like she was never there.
I don't even think it jibes with how they've written the character so far. Hahn's a stubborn, outspoken doctor. I can't see her just dropping this. I also can't see her just walking away from a fight. Though I'm sure she can do better than being at the 12th rated hospital in the country anyway (where the Chief of Staff sits around torturing his residents and playing with dolls) considering she's like a leading heart surgeon. I just wanted to see her at least go down swinging. This was more of leaving with a whimper and off in a snit. Which is something that Grey's Anatomy writers know how to create well. Whining and pouting are their specialties.
What did you think? Did you think it was the exit Smith deserved? Are you still shocked she's gone? Let us know.

I think it's a shame. Smith is a damn fine actress and they were lucky to have her.
I loved Callie and Erica's friendship and didn't really buy the transition to love affair for them, but I think both characters deserve better then this. Brooke Smith is a terrific actress, and the character added a lot to the show. If the problem was the lesbian affair, they had a built-in exit - Callie doesn't really feel gay - without losing the character of Erica. I would have loved to have seen them split up, stay friends, and watch Erica explore her new sexual identity. It's a waste.
I think it was cowardly of the network to cut the story line. The Hahn character was not the most likeable, but that's what made her intersting to watch. The relationship with Callie, humanized her a bit. I agree with Rachel, there were other ways you could have played especially given what Hahn had just discovered about the chief an Izzie, lots of material there. I'm sorry to see this actress go.
I think that if Erica was going to leave she would have done it in a bigger way. She would have secretly had a meeting and then walked out on them in a big way. I didn't really think that Callie & Erica had any chemistry but just walking away makes NO sense. I also think she would report them and cause Seattle Grace more suffering. That makes sense.
The handling of Hahn's exit was poorly handled. It seems almost like it wasn't on the agenda when the scenes were actually shot. Perhaps she is just edited out of future episodes without affecting the central plot.
In any case, Brooke brought a texture to the show that will be hard to replace. She will be sorely missed. Good Luck Brooke with future endeavors!
I'm mainly pissed that they didn't deal with Dennygate sooner once Hahn came on full time. Back when she was shunning Yang from CT in favor of Izzie I kept waiting for the issue to arise and it never did until the bitter end. So much wasted potential by ousting her.

To me it seemed like the writers didn't see this coming (it was all announced this week) so that's why the exit was so horrible. I didn't know until coming her that it was the last time we'd see Hahn. I thought despite the announcement we'd still see her for a few more episodes.
And I have to say, I loved seeing Hahn emotionally tied to a patient. I think this could have been the beginning of a great storyline between Izzie and Hahn.
This whole portrayal for Hahn was a major rip-off from ER. The brilliant doctor who had to walk w/ a cane that everyone hated turned out to be gay on ER, and then what do you know, they did the same thing w/ Hahn's character just when I thought she was going to break down and give it up to Sloane. On top of that, the exit wasn't the greatest, you don't know if they're going to replace her w/ a new improved Erica Hahn or just write her off (or out) like they did Burke.
I think it fit perfectly with Erica. she consistently has had an all or nothing attitude. and telling callie she couldn't be a sort of lesbian was bull and I was glad to hear callie say yes i can. I don't go for these blended name relationships where people dissappear in favor of their coupled moniker. She's Callie, not callica. I love my Callie, part timer or not. they were cute together but I think something more beautiful could be in the works.
I think Hahn gets into an accident and the doctors at Seattle Grace have to operate on her. Didn't you see the clip of Callie crying from next week? That ties up all those nasty little loose ends like the hospital getting into trouble and Callie having to end the relationship.
I can't imagine ABC could legally fire someone because of a storyline, and I can't imagine they'd be so tone deaf anyways. I have to think there was a contractual issue that made ABC unwilling to work with this actress any more. I'll be very interested to see if she's on another ABC show any time soon.
I read an interview with Brooke that stated she was told mid-September. So this was actually how they intended to end it... I'm guessing we'll get some kind of wrap-up next week.
Never liked Hahn particularly, so I'm not sorry to see her go. The circumstances of Smith's dismissal are stupid but I won't miss her. Grey's has always been a watered down ER anyway. Hahn may be a ballbusting surgeon but she's no Keri Weaver.
They handled the whole situation so poorly. Hahn was one of the only doctors who I didn't hate. I always felt so bad that she's surrounded by a bunch of incompetent idiots, especially last night with Izzy.
And I hate how the chief is so appauled that it's the 12th ranked hospital, when he's doing a terrible job at running it. It's become basically a big joke.

What?? She's gone??!!
I read that Smith WANTED to leave. She was uncomfortable with the lesbian storyline. I don't think it is the writer's fault. I think they did the best they could given that she wanted to go.
I had no idea she was leaving the show until I saw this posting just now.
I think it was obvious this was her last episode - she walked off into the night. What more is there to say? The Callie-Erica storyline was done anyway - I lost interest a couple episodes ago.
The Dennygate issue could have been a great storyline, if it had developed over a few episodes and culminated with Hahn leaving the hospital in disgust over the whole issue, plus her breakup with Callie. Hahn's character was underdeveloped and was basically just the cliched brilliant, sharp-tongued surgeon with no social skills. I agree that it was lame to develop a strong friendship between Erica and Callie, which was great on its own, and then throw in the lesbian angle as sort of an afterthought. It would be too bad if Brooke Smith left the show because of that, since it was such a poorly developed plotline.
I agree, Ellen. OR - Izzie could accidentally kill her in an arguement over the whole thing, then get sent to jail for the rest of the season! Two birds with that stone!
Actually - Brooke has been a HUGE supporter of Hahn's coming out. From being cast she's been very vocal about Hahn's relationship with either Yang, and then Callie. She's actually been the most outspoken, vocal supporters of the story.
Um is it me or is there something they are obviously not saying about the actress which forced her to be fired without ability to write her out. I am thinking she has some serious problem we will find out about later.
Hahn was one of my favourite characters. Imagine that, a competent doctor? Not on Grey's! Better get her out of here.
Complete and utter BS. Well done, ABC. You've lost a viewer.
I think that, though I loved Brooke, the show handled her and Callie really badly. A lesbian relationahip could (and should) have offered an interesting new alternative to a show that dealt in a lot of bed hopping. As it is, Hahn's gone without a lot of people missing her character, as they could have if the whole plotline was better handled from the start of season one, and we're back in very much the same boat as far as other characters are concerned.I've heard talk about a bisexual intern, but I just hpoe that Grey's doesn't go down the random, hot, temporary lesbian route that shows like The OC have in the past

I mean season five, not season one. Sorry!
I had no idea this was happening. Weird!
Um...I didn't even know that last Thursday was her final episode. I really like her character. It gives some much needed balance to the ongoing stupidity that is the show! My ratings for this show have been going down for the past year, simply due to the fact that nothing really changes...seriously! Hahn was awesome. I was hoping she could bring Seattle Grace back from the dead! I hate how shows turn out sometimes. Why do they have to get rid of great, strong characters? Brothers & Sisters, here I come!
what a crappy send off.
Even Burke's departure was better than this.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
