Just What We Needed! More Dancing on TV!

Don't get me wrong. I love So You Think You Can Dance. I aspire to be on America's Best Dance Crew (despite the fact that I can't hip-hop dance AT ALL). I kinda secretly adore the chaos of Dancing With the Stars. But I'm not sure I really needed another dance show. And yet, the adorable Nigel Lythgoe (and producing partner Simon Fuller) are unleashing Superstar Dancers of the World (which is thankfully listed as a working title and needs to be changed ASAP) on America sometime early next year.

Eight professional dance teams from around the world (hence the lame-ass title) will be competing in the style of dance from their country. Which is already confusing. How do you put a Bollywood dance up against a tango and then judge them? They are completely different. Celtic dancing vs. a waltz? That just doesn't make any sense. And much as I would normally say Lythgoe and Fuller are pretty good judges of what the American public will like (Idol, SYTYCD, America's Got Talent), I think they might have missed the mark on this one. Don't they understand that the entire American dance on TV phenomenon thrives on our obsession with amateurs becoming professionals, not on watching actual professionals dance? If people wanted to watch professionals dance, I wouldn't get laughed at when I say that Strictly Ballroom is one of my all-time favorite movies.

And yet, I'm cautiously intrigued by this poorly named show (in my lonely little dance obsessed bubble over here), despite my confusion about the judging. I doubt that it will do well, though, and I'm skeptical about the hosting abilities of Michael Flatley. Especially after watching him guest judge on Dancing With the Stars recently. He was fine but a little dull (I was gonna say flat, but that was just too easy). His skill on the dance floor is fairly exciting (if you are into that kind of thing) but I do not think he's got the potential to be the next Cat Deeley. Unless he decides to wear her outrageous outfits...
