I love Ruby Gettinger. I'll admit it. I was totally skeptical when I got the screener for this new Style channel show (which starts on Sunday). It's a docudrama series about Ruby, a 500ish pound woman, with a love of southern food, trying to lose weight the good old-fashioned way -- by diet and exercise. As a plus-size gal myself, I know this is quite a challenge, but I also wasn't quite sure what to expect from a person who weighs more than 500 pounds. See, all my judging of that size is from that Nip/Tuck episode where the woman was stuck to the couch, the contestants on The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Fit Club, and the recent reports about the world's fattest man getting married and having to be transported in a flatbed. It's no wonder that my perception of weight is so skewed.
Anyway, it only took about two minutes of me watching Ruby to realize that this charming southern lady was mobile, positive, optimistic, funny and altogether addictive to watch. She hooked me when she sat on the bed, looking in the mirror at her bulging stomach calling it a "perfect smile" and then saying how much that scared her. She looked terrified as she sat in her doctor's office as he listed the terrible physical ailments that her future holds if she doesn't lose weight, but always kept a positive attitude. Even when they didn't have the right sized seats for her. She's so polite and adorable about asking, even though you can tell she's sad. She broke my freakin' heart with a story about how her dog saved her life.
She's a sweetie and has good friends and family around her that are trying to get her to a healthy size on the scale so that she can get back to working and do all the adventurous things that she imagines herself doing. Though her one friend Georgia likes to cook "Southern," aka fattening, and she's not really helping at all... she's more of an enabler. She even brings desserts to Ruby. Hopefully she'll learn in upcoming episodes.
The cutest surprise though was the appearance by Ruby's "West Coast Friend," Brittany. She's a toned blonde gal, who heard the doctor's news and came rushing to help Ruby alter her lifestyle. She's the one buying her a treadmill and taking her shopping for healthy foods (though the adorable food addicted Ruby tries to pull one over with some "diet chocolate"... which isn't diet at all). And while watching this Mindy says to me, "Hey, that girl looks like the girl from Sweet Valley High." Turns out that "West Coast Friend Brittany" and Sweet Valley High star Brittany Daniel are one in the same. Cool!
And then we get a glimpse of Ruby starting on her journey towards a thinner her, with trips to a therapist's office, a nutritionist and a hot personal trainer. Her go get 'em attitude makes me really believe that if anyone can shed 300 lbs, it's Ruby. I'm a believer.
I think this could be my new feel good/inspiring show of the week. Let us know what you think.

A friend of a friend works for Style and says Ruby is just as sweet and amazing in person as she seems on screen. As a big girl myself, I appreciate the sincerity and openness she is bringing to this major struggle. There are cute preview videos, including a tour of Savannah, on mystyle.com
I was going to watch this anyway, but now I'm looking forward to it even more.
Seems like a more honest portrael of how to lose weight than Biggest Loser. Cant wait to see the 1st episode!!
I saw a preview of this today and fell in love with her instantly. I'm in!
Having struggled with my weight my entire life, I am at my heaviest now. Ruby is truly an inspiration and I plan to follow her journey till the end.
haven't seen her in years ...big girl with a big hart and i know you can do this
From what I can tell online, it looks like they've been shopping this show for a while. there are some videos out on the Internet named "Hollywood Starlet and the Georgia Peach." Was this the pre-pilot? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1032939358584667193
