Golden Globes: And the Nominees Are...

Golden Globes: And the Nominees Are...

While I was disappointed that the live TV broadcast (at least the Today show version) covered very few TV categories, I was pretty excited by a couple of things. Normally the category of Actor/Actress in a miniseries or made-for-TV movie is something I just shrug at and pretend doesn't exist, but my ears did perk up quite a bit when I heard that Kiefer Sutherland had been nominated for his role in 24: Redemption. Jack's Back! That's pretty awesome!

Also pretty awesome? True Blood snagging a nod for best drama series. I expected Mad Men, Dexter and House, and while In Treatment wasn't on my wish list, it certainly is deserving. However, True Blood I had pegged as a long shot, and I'm thrilled this new series grabbed the attention of the Golden Globe nominators, who also showed some love for Sookie Stackhouse herself (by which I mean Anna Paquin).

But those HFPA people really love them some cable programming. Aside from House, there's not a network show to be found in the Best Drama category or Best Actor in a Drama category, which includes award show usual suspects like Hugh Laurie (House), Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Mad Men's Jon Hamm (without his John Ham). Also, Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) earned a nomination. Best Drama Actresses are also primarily cable stars, Kyra "Confeyuss" Sedgwick (The Closer), the luminous January Jones (from Mad Men) and the aforementioned Anna Paquin. The only network gals to get nods were Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters) and Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU)... which will hopefully convince Hargitay to stay on the series.

Over on the comedy side, there's a predictable batch of choices. I'm disappointed that Pushing Daisies didn't find its way back on to the short list this year, but the rest of the stuff is fairly familiar award show fare. Californication, Entourage and Weeds are going head to head against The Office and 30 Rock. Considering I stopped finding Entourage entertaining years ago, I'm annoyed to see it here. Yet again. It seems like it is nominated by rote at this point. 30 Rock, FTW!

Similarly, Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) and Steve Carell (The Office) are up against Kevin Connolly (Entourage), David Duchovny (Californication) and ... wait for it... Tony Shalhoub (Monk). That is not a typo, and thine eyes do not deceive you. Either someone over at HFPA erroneously copied and pasted from an old ballot, or somewhere out there, they really think that Tony Shalhoub is deserving of awards for doing the same exact thing that he's been doing for the last bunch of years. I thought we'd moved past the whole Tony Shalhoub thing. Apparently I was wrong.

Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) and Tina Fey (30 Rock) are inexplicably up against Debra Messing (The Starter Wife) for the Best Actress, TV Musical or Comedy category. Did she start singing on that show suddenly? Because I don't find her particularly funny on that series.

And then the categories that I like to refer to as the Melting Pot. It's like they don't want to hand out supporting trophies for all the different varieties of TV, so they toss 'em all together and hope for the best. It is the Best Performance By An Actor (or Actress) In A Supporting Role In a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made For Television. Got it? This encompasses series dramas, comedies and one-off specials. The actresses competing for this mess are Eileen Atkins (Cranford), Laura Dern (Recount), Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment) and Melissa George (In Treatment). I actually didn't see George on In Treatment, but I really don't enjoy her as an actress in general, so I'm rooting for anyone else to win. Most especially Rachel Griffiths, though I did like Laura Dern in Recount. The Actors up for this stellar award are Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Denis Leary (Recount), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Blair Underwood (In Treatment) and Tom Wilkinson (John Adams). Wilkinson is nominated for Actor in a Miniseries for Recount as well, so there's a lot of love for him this morning. Of course I want NPH to win. He's phenomenal as Barney. Though Blair Underwood deserves some kind of award for making Dirty Sexy Money at all tolerable this season, and if it has to be for something where he got to show off his actual acting chops? So be it.

Aside from the love for True Blood and Jack Bauer, not much really got me all that excited here. I'm happy about Mad Men, though at this point I would have been surprised if they'd chosen to ignore it. I would have liked to see some attention paid to Life on Mars or Battlestar Galactica (I keep hoping they are doing what the Oscars did with Lord of the Rings and waiting for the series to end before awarding it a big prize, though I realize this is probably a delusion on my part). And I'm still reeling from Tony Shalhoub being on any list again. I'm having a hard time concentrating on much of anything else right now. We'll be writing lots more on this subject as we get closer to the January 11 ceremony; hopefully I'll be over the shock by then.

NPH!! Thank God. In such a broad category, I was worried he would be left off. I too would have loved to see Pushing Dasies and Galacatica get some attention, as well as Friday Night Lights.

*yawn* They pick the same people every year (Steve Carell, Hugh Laurie, Jeremy Piven, etc.). Yes, they deserve awards and praise, but they have already received it. They should nominate new people and stop having the same take up space.

I agree with Crystal. Why isn't Kenneth from 30 Rock nominated for supporting actor in a comedy? Or the guy who plays Andy in Weeds? Mary Louise Parker may be great, but that show has a ton of awesome characters as well that seem deserving of some award goodness.

I have never understood that 'Supporting Actor/Actress' category for the Globes. Why are comedic or dramatic TV show actors up against mini-series or TV-movie actors in the same category? You're pretty much guaranteed to NOT win, if you're the comedic choice. It's nearly impossible to win when you're up against 'mini-series' actors, because the voters tend to go with the drama over the comedy. So while I'm very excited whenever I see Neil Patrick Harris get nominated, because he is so marvelously talented and deserving, it also frustrates me because unless some miracle occurs, he can't possibly win. It used to happen to Sean Hayes all the time, when he was nominated for Will & Grace. Drives me nuts.

Anna Paquin is so bad on True Blood I can't even articulate it. The show is fair, but I am astounded anyone would nominate her for an award. If anyone on the show does deserve a nomination, it's Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette).

That is so true, my mouth dropped after reading she got nominated. I love the show but I extremely dislike her as Sookie and as an actress. I think she was nominated b/c of her Oscar (100 years ago) for "The Piano." And I agree, if anyone deserves to be singled out it's Nelsan Ellis as Lafayette

I am glad that The Offie, Mad Men and True Blood were all nominated. However, I so agree about Anna Paquin. Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette) is, hands down, the best actor on that show. I so wish he would've gotten a nom, but with such a messed up category, I can see how he was left out.

Yeah for Jon Hamm, January Jones and of course, Neil Patrick Harris. That man can do no wrong in my book.

God. Battlestar Galactica again and again gets snubbed. LOL to Angels comment about LoTR. Let's hope that's true. The series is one thing but to keep ignoring Mary McDonnell's consistently brilliant performance is just a travesty. Makes me sick.

My main gripe is with all the cable shows getting noms over the network shows. Really discourages the networks from giving a scripted show a chance and why we'll get Jay Leno in prime time five days a week.

I'm sure the cable shows are fine shows, but since I don't pay for HBO at $22.00 a month, I don't watch these shows.

I'll eat my hat if Mary-Louise Parker doesn't win. The season 4 finale pretty much guarenteed it. John Hamm is another sure thing. He was astounding in the penultimate episode of Mad Men S2. Also YAY True Blood! Thoroughly deserved nomination. Anna Paquin, not so much.

Can't believe Generation Kill isn't on the mini-series list, though. It was incredible The Shield and The Wire are ignored for the final time too, I see. What a joke.

I was just coming back here to say: Generation Kill should've been on there somewhere!

Alexander SkarsgÄrd was amazing as Brad Colbert. This is just another reason why the Globes should have seperate Supporting actor/actress categories for TV movies/mini-series, comedies and dramas.

I realize why people feel like network TV gets shafted, but I still wish a brilliant mini-series like GK got recognition.

Angel, I have to heartily disagree with your comments about Debra Messing in the Starter Wife. She's been amazing since the pilot, and I've loved every minute of season 2.

On a side not, there's this other show on USA...usually on after Monk...and it's funnier. Psych? Maybe you've heard of it, PTB? No? *sigh*

And while I agree with you Eponah re: cable vs. network, I can't blame the Globes for recognizing the complete lack of quality programming on network TV. This is what happens when your lineup is all reality tv& police/medical procedurals.

I know that until there's a "teenage drama" category there will never be any nods for Gossip Girl or shows of its ilk, but dayum, Meester/Westwick have been blowing it up of late. The last episode was bananas.

I'll third that Generation Kill not getting any nod is pretty inexcusable. Hands down best thing I watched on tv this year, period.

As far as the In Treatment noms, Melissa George?!?! NO. Mia Wasikowska was fantastic in that series and far more deserving than George.

I tried to like Battlestar Galactica, but I find it gloomy, one-note, and the characters uninteresting. And they wear their tank tops backwards. Sorry!! Just can't get with that show.

These award shows are pretty lame. They are very conservative, in that they just repeat and repeat the same noms (Monk, Entourage). What do Jeremy Piven and Tony Shalhoub have on everybody in Hollywood? I've NEVER liked Piven in anything, but he is always getting noms and awards. Shalhoub was good years ago in "Wings" but the Monk character is so one-note and trivializes mental illness, IMO.

For some, it's always the same names. By example, I like Hugh Laurie but I think the character is now over the top and was way better during seasons 1 and 2. For me HL has been nominated because he is HL.
Well...

As some have talked about Gossip Girl's Meester and Westwick, I would have love some recognition for other people like Jensen Ackles (yes yes someone from the CW). I think he is a very good actor... his problems ? he is on TheCw and he is hot.

Some Brotherhood and The Shield recognition could be good too.

All in all, there are people and shows that clearly deserve to be nominated. Nothing is perfect.

I was thinking about one-note performances (Shalhoug, Sedgwick). Awards love them. Like Rain Man--playing a character like that requires a very narrow range; once you've mastered certain mannerisms and reactions, you just keep repeating them. It doesn't require emotional complexity or subtlety at all. And yet they are awards bait.

Just a thought.

When i first saw True Blood, I was thrown by Anna Paquin's performance. Her Sookie is definitely different from the character in the book, but they have taken liberties with many things from the books. Dramatically it may work better to alter Sookie's character for television. I don't think that means that Paquin's not very good, but that the script and direction may require a different type of Sookie than the readers have grown used to. The book's Sookie is a cooler customer, yes, but that gives TV-Sookie space to grow over the seasons. Perhaps this will make for a more satisfying character arc than if they had made no alterations. Television is a different medium.

I've been liking Laura's episodes fine on "In Treatment", though I will admit that the girl who plays Sophie is incredible for her age. I don't remember seeing Melissa George in anything prior to this series, so I have no previous bias. I'd rather either of those two win out over Diane Wiest though, I don't enjoy most of Gina's sessions with Paul and I don't think she's been getting particularly meaty material to sink her teeth into. I'm a couple weeks away from being done with the repeats of this series and I'm loving it a lot. I still love Dexter and a few other cable shows, but I think In Treatment was my favorite this year (I haven't seen The Shield since Season 4 and I've never seen The Wire, The Tudors, or Mad Men, so I'm not up on ALL cable dramas. Also not sure if I'll ever get around to watching beyond the first seasons of Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck, which I watched back when their first seasons came out on DVD).

I'm glad True Blood got nominated. It was consistently funny, well-acted, and compelling. The pilot wasn't all that great, but it grew into something pretty amazing, IMO. It's not a Buffy rip-off like someone said previously, it's completely different in tone, overall structure, and what it seems to be going for. That doesn't diminish that Joss Whedon series unfortunately never getting nominated beyond I think a writing category one year (maybe make-up too?), but True Blood is definitely deserving. True that someone else should've been nominated in the acting category though. For female, Rutina Wesley, who plays Tara. Male ? I'd give it to Ryan Kwanten as Jason Stackhouse or the dude playing Lafayette, easy. I have a feeling Sam and Bill's big moments/season are yet to come.

Entourage enjoyed its best year in a while. It IS a little tiresome to see it nominated all the time, but Season 5 was worthy, IMO. I'm glad Kevin Connely's getting some recognition. For all the laughs Turtle, Drama, and Ari bring to the table, Eric is the unsung hero of the series and arguably the most compelling character at times. Sure, it's a pretty shallow comedy at times about spoiled adolescent-types, but it's not ALWAYS that.

Generation Kill--ugly snub.

So's Brotherhood, IMO.

Lost's best season (IMO) could've used some recognition, rather than all the heaps of undeserved praise it got in its initial season when it was still largely unproven, IMO, aside from the talents of a few of its cast members.

I, too, was extremely disappointed not to see Phylicia Rashad's name on the list for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Television Movie. She was superlative in "A Raisin in the Sun." It is almost sacrilege she isn't on the list. I also think it is a crying shame that Kristin Chenoweth wasn't noticed for her wonderful work on the underappreciated (and unjustly un-nominated) "Pushing Daisies." I think NCIS should be nominated for something. I mean, if people were to sit down and watch it, they would see that it is completly different from other crime/forensic shows like CSI. NCIS actually takes the time to develop the characters personalities and they are able to actually make dialouge that can actually be funny and not e a corny one-liner.
