Neil Patrick Harris singing about anything is pretty much all it takes to make me happy (see my summer ramblings about Dr. Horrible). We don't lovingly refer to NPH as our patron saint around the office for nothing. He does magic, he can sing, he's Barney, he used to play a doctor on TV. Just all around awesome. So of course I was going to love the latest offering from Funny or Die. They had the amazing Marc Shaiman (he wrote all of those infectiously addictive songs for Hairspray) cook up a special musical number about the Prop 8 controversy. It's a joyful and silly star-studded affair and has succeeded in finally getting me out of my funk.
It starts out at Sacramento Community College, where they are staging Prop 8 -- The Musical. It features a brightly colored group of gay rights-friendly people (including Maya Rudolph, Margaret Cho and Andy Richter) gleefully warbling about how excited they are about Obama and change. And then there's a group of religious folks (including John C. Reilly, Allison Janney, Craig Robinson, Lake Bell, Sarah Chalke, Rashida Jones and Kathy Najimy) clad in dark clothes who come in to put a damper on all the fun. Until Jesus (played by a shrimp cocktail-eating Jack Black, of course) steps in and tries to broker some peace. It doesn't work. So it all comes down to Neil Patrick Harris who, with the help of the adorable Shaiman tickling the ivory's, gives the religious folks a reason to embrace gay marriage. It's kinda genius and was apparently staged by the huggable Adam Shankman (or Shankers for those So You Think You Can Dance fans out there). All in all, a good time, filled with clever lyrics and some fine singing, including a nice belt at the end by the divalicious Jenifer Lewis. The only downside? I'm gonna have this stuck in my head all day long.
Yeah, I'm in a gushy mood today. Can't help it. I love a musical, and topical short ones are the best kind. Watch the clip embedded below (or here if you've got one of those quirky computers) and then let us know what you think.

Thanks for posting Angel, I have added it to my facebook. This is great!
Posted it on my facebook too. I was the third of my friends to post it.
Love love love that I'm not the only one who sees the hypocrisy of shouting "Obama! Change!" from the rafters and then supporting archaic, rights-infringing ballots. On. The. Same. Day.
Sorry, I hate Prop 8 as much as anyone, but I thought this was incredibly lame, except for the presence of Allison Janney, who is intrinsically awesome.
NPH is a GOD!
