Olivia, Nooooooooooooooo!

by Lauren Gitlin December 4, 2008 3:01 PM
Olivia, Nooooooooooooooo! Word on the street is that Mariska Hargitay, aka the prettiest, nicest, awesomest actor lady in the history of Law & Order might be leaving the franchise after ten years of service. This cannot happen. As Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, she not only apprehends pervy bad guys and soothes victims with her gentle touch, she keeps that wild card Elliot in place. Theirs is the perfect symbiotic relationship. Who else would go all the way out to Jersey to talk to his craycray mommy (the fabulous Ellen Burstyn) and get her to give a statement exonerating her drunk grandkid because Elliot was too much of a proud jerky boy to do it himself? And 'member what happened when Connie Nielson stepped in to partner up with Stabler while Liv was undercover for some vague FBI beeswax? Disaster, that's what!

If the rumors are true, the very least they can do is come up with a seriously amazing send-off for Liv. It better not be any drunk driver BS like they pulled with Claire Kincaid. And if they cook up some plot in which she and Elliot knock boots and her guilt forces her to retire or request relocation, I will eat my hat (although you know that coupling would be hot!).

Rarely has a female lead made quite the impact Hargitay did on the franchise at large, with the exception of S. Epatha Merkerson. (I'll admit I dug Annabella Sciora on CI but wanted to make with the stabby knife on Alicia Witt's more recent Agent Falacci). Who on earth could fill Hargitay's shoes? Seriously, that's not a rhetorical question. Nominate your picks in the comments, people.

It's interesting that there are five new recaps up today, but all of the headline space is taken up promoting stuff like this blog and those odiously twee photo galleries. Gosh, whoever said the Bravo takeover would lose sight of what TWoP is actually about was a wise, wise person.

Jill Hennesy comes immediatrely to mind. If not her than perhaps some of the discarded cast of Lost-- if they can decide which ones are actually dead dead.

It's too bad Sarah Shahi and Kate Walsh are otherwise engaged. (And while I want Seth Gabel to land another TV role, like, yesterday, I'm not sure this is the one...)

*That* is what happened to formerly awesome TWOP? Huh. That explains a lot.

Christina Ricci mostly because she's tiny and hot and it'd be hilarious watching them trying fit stabler and her in a single frame

Or even better, dont bring a new female onto the show, bring back Dean Winters!! Brian Cassidy was, for the shows first days, the heart and soul of it, pretty much the only one who was just a truly sweet hearted guy with no deep dark secrets.
Bring him back now saying he's had ten years to steel himself against the horror their job entails and he can work again.
He and Meloni together are an awesome acting partnership, their scenes on Oz where some of the best because both of them where so incredibly, fantastically manipulative and self serving and yet would go all out for the people they loved(Beecher and Cyril respectively)
The for women on the show, get rid of Munch because i'm just ....i adore him, but he's useless at this point...and maybe dial down the Fin too...get two lady cops on there but no one annoying.
And no one who's been on it before...damn.

I nominate President Roslin to fill 'Livia's shoes! She would have no problem ejecting a perv's butt out an airlock. Actually, any of the women from BSG, or HELO! would be great, and as the series is ending, maybe NBC can replace most of the SVU cast with BSG actors... ADA Bill Adama would be the baddest prosecuter EVAR.

Yes! I love nothing more than seeing a commenter like you who is dropping truth bombs on these fools.

ITA with you, although I am finding the blogs about as entertaining as the recaps these days, as recappers like Jacob drag the quality way down.

Recappers like Jacob dragging the quality way down? He is one of the last fine writers standing from good-twop. His brilliant recaps must fly a bit too far over your head. He ain't the problem - the new administration here is.

THANK YOU for hating on Jacob! I refuse to read his recaps now. His writing reminds me of some of my fellow English majors from college - the ones I avoided like the plague. His emo, psuedo-intellectual, melodramatic love of his own "voice" hurts my eyes. Because I have to ROLL them so often and so strenuously.

Too far over my head? Sounds like classic Jacobean arrogance.

When I read my recaps, I want classic TWOP: a summary of the show, plus humorous comments or observations about the show's mistakes/flaws. I don't want a philosophical discussion about the implications of Weeds' theme song. And I definitely don't want the recapper's opinion about a minute detail of the episode, such as a recent Ugly Betty recap in which he decided he needed to dish for half a page on what magazine he would create that best represents him. Gimme a freakin' break. I'll take M. Giant or Potes any day over that obnoxious jerk.

I agree Jacob is about the last great recapper, GG recaps are my favorite these days, and yes all this change in administration has not been good for the site.

I'm sorry did she actually have a role? I thought she just had to stand around and look pretty while her partner solved the case.

You want a good example of what a good recap should be? Check out the Alias recaps. CLASSIC. Hilarious, fun, and still tell you what's going on in the show. The Battlestar Galactica recaps were a horrible, pretentious mess. Tho the recaplets were funny, the recaps sucked.
