Move over Anthony Bourdain, I've got a new travel channel crush and his name is Adam Richman. He's not your conventional hottie, and he may not dine on high-brow cuisine or go globe-trotting to exotic locales, but this down home guy is exceedingly lovable and his new series, Man V. Food is addictive. Now I don't like to cook much, so watching Giada whip up a meal isn't really all that fascinating to me, but I do like to eat, and I love shows that involve a competition, and this one serves up a little bit of everything.
Here's the gist. The adorably personable Adam Richman heads off to an American city (Pittsburgh, Amarillo, Columbus... all your typical vacation hot spots) and indulges in the best local cuisine they have to offer. He looks for oddities, like a two-pound donut (which is roughly the size of an adult human head) or notable fare (like deep dish pizza in Chicago). Size does matter in this one, and the bigger, the better. Especially because during each episode, he competes in whatever the famous "food challenge" is in that town. Indulging in a timed feast that involved a 72 ounce steak (with fixin's), or eating a nearly eight pound hamburger, or seeing if he can beat the record for burrito eating (I'm convinced I could win that one!). It's pretty incredible. He's not even a professional eater. Adam's not one of those guys that sucks down 50 hot dogs on the Fourth of July. He's just a typical dude who likes to eat, and really likes greasy, or well-prepared American food. Seriously. We could hang out. I'm already planning my summer road trips around these locations, because if there's one thing I need to see before I die, it is a burger that is bigger than my head.
But the best part about the whole show is Richman himself. He has an unbridled enthusiasm that is simply infectious. He's got a way of taking something as typical as a hamburger and making it look like the most delectable thing on the planet. He's fun with these local restaurateurs, some of whom aren't used to the spotlight, and even when he can't finish a challenge, he's a good sport about it. He's funny and quick-witted and just so affable that it makes me want to cook the world's biggest cupcake or something so he'll come visit me.
I do however worry for his arteries. All this heavy eating is bound to take a toll, and judging by the upcoming slate of episodes, there isn't a salad eating competition to be found... at least not yet. Maybe they are saving that one for Season 2. If you haven't seen it yet, there's a marathon on New Year's Eve and I highly recommend you give it a try. Put it on at a party; watching a grown man scarf down buffalo wings so hot that you need to sign a waiver before eating them, is a real conversation piece.
Have you watched and are you an Adam fan? If not, what are your food TV favorites?

I've seen Adam. I must admit to being both repulsed and intrigued at the things he eats.
He is the best because he is genuinely enthusiastic -- not condescending like Guy Fieri on the Food Network and not bourgois like Bourdain has become (and yes, he has really become everything that he used to rail against). Richman is awesome and EXTREMELY fun to watch.
Hey there, it's Adam and I just want you to know that your kindness and support of me and the show is the freaking greatest! I assure you - cholesterol and blood lipids are A-OK. And I must confess, as mind-blowingly awesome and decadent as these foods are - the wonderful people I meet might be the best thing about the show. I'm not even supposed to respond to blogs or anything - but genuine enthusiasm (and deeply flattering words) deserves a response in kind. Let me know when you've finished that cupcake, cupcake!
