The SAG Award nominees were announced today, and I was trying to feign disinterest because of that whole strike/not strike thing that I'm trying really hard to pretend isn't happening because if I lose out on more TV, there's going to be lots of hell to pay. Anyway, whether or not they decide to strike is irrelevant to these nominations, I suppose, but it's time for actors to give themselves a little pat on the back. I find it hard to get riled up about these, because they aren't the Emmys... or even the Golden Globes, but I do sort of like the ensemble award, so there's that.
There's also a category which I never knew about, which could be new or it could be that I just can't actually force myself to sit through the SAG Awards because I'm on speech overload during awards season. I'd rather watch the drunk movie stars on the IFC Awards. Anyway, "outstanding performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series" has the best nominees, so I'm gonna start there. It's got Friday Night Lights, Heroes, Prison Break, The Unit and The Closer. Kind of an awesome mix. Though I wouldn't necessarily put the cast of The Closer on par with the crazy wire work on Heroes, the ridiculous chases on Prison Break or the war and fighting stuff on The Unit, but that's just me. Obviously, I think that Friday Night Lights should win. I don't really even care if it has the best stunts or not (playing football is HARD) but I'd like to see that show be rewarded for something. Though, arguably this is the only place Prison Break would ever win an award.
There's a whole bunch of TV Movie and miniseries stuff. I'm sure they were all fine performances, but my allegiance is to Jack Bauer, who is nominated for saving the world in Redemption. I also would root for Phylicia Rashad for A Raisin in the Sun, just because you can't root against Mrs. Cosby. It's against the rules.
Actor in a Drama series is filled with the usual suspects: Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House). Of course they had to give nods to William Shatner and James Spader for the final season of Boston Legal. Which... whatever. I just don't care enough to argue that there were stronger performances. Let them have their moment. Actress in a Drama is also a bunch of predictable people: Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Mariska Hargitay (L&O: SVU), Holly Hunter (Saving Grace) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer). Though I'm mostly excited that Elisabeth Moss got a nod for Mad Men. Go Peggy! Take no prisoners.
Actor in a Comedy Series is Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, Yay!), Steve Carell (The Office, Yay!), David Duchovny (Californication, Meh), Jeremy Piven (Entourage, Ugh) and Tony Shalhoub (Monk, Blah). Actress in a Comedy noms are Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), America Ferrara (Ugly Betty), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) and Tracey Ullman (Tracey Ullman's State of the Union). I'm surprised to see Tracey Ullman on here, she seems like a longshot. She could have been great, but I couldn't get past the red, white and blue flag she had painted on her tongue in the billboards. That weirdly grossed me out. Anyway, I love you Liz Lemon!
Ensemble Drama is more Boston Legal, Dexter, House, Mad Men and The Closer. I'm trying to figure out how other actors who are doing the nominating don't watch a show like Friday Night Lights or Battlestar Galactica and be like, "damn!" but I guess that's an unsolved mystery. Comedy Series potential winners are 30 Rock, Desperate Housewives (NOT a Comedy), Entourage (NOT funny any more), The Office and Weeds. Hopefully those actor types don't just give it to Entourage because it is a show about THEM.
Here's the complete list, and here's the movies side of things. Leave your thoughts below.

Woohoo! No Anna Paquin! But no Friday Night Lights, either, which sucks. Oh, wait, they got the Stunt Ensemble nomination... which is what, exactly?
Friday Night Lights is the best show on TV, it deserves more recognition. But according to the show itself, life just isn't fair. But it doesn't mean that I have to like it.
I'm really mad that Pushing Daisies didn't get nominated for anything. No Golden Globes, either. That show deserves way better than it gets. It's a fantastic show that gets no recognition and gets dumped after a season and a half. How did Desperate Housewives get nominated as a comedy and PD didn't? It's much more of a comedy, and it's much better of a show!
I hope Mad Men doesn't win. Not only because I would be bitter that BattlestarGalactica missed out while another critical darling got a bauble, but because I just don't think it is all it's cracked up to be. I loved The Wire, with its slow burn pacing and what not, but Mad Men is just dull and competently acted, nothing exceptional.
Michael C Hall deserves some more recognition though. I'd say Mary-Louise Parker deserves a nod, she certainly acted very well this year, but I can't say there was very much comedy on offer in Weeds this time around so how it got in that category I do not know.
I mean, us lowly passionate Shield fans would have really really liked Michael Chiklis or CCH Pounder on the nom list for this (or Katey Segal or Ron Perlman on Sons of Anarchy) or the Golden Globes, but of course there is no such sanity.
Are these even real "nominations"? Or do they just use the same list for like 5 years, then create a new list and use that for 5 years, and so on.
YAH!!! No Twee!!! Pushing Daiseis finallly got the lack of respect it deserved!!
Man, screw these idiots. No Pushing Daisies nods at all? That's just epic fail, particularly as it concerns the Ensemble category.
BOO HISS to no nominations for FNL or Pushing Daisies. What the frack is up with all the noms for Boston Legal-seriously?!?!?!?
Should have been January Jones, not Elizabeth Moss, for the Actress category.
Pushing Daisies should have been on there somewhere. Anyone who only thinks it's twee clearly is missing the dark underbelly.
Seriously!? Boston Legal? So many of these nominees are EXACTLY what you would expect, and in a bad way.
What about How I Met Your Mother? Pretty much the FUNNIEST show on television. What about Pushing Daisies? They seem to be ignoring "smaller" programs in favor of the more stereotypical popular ones.
House is so off these days. I guess those people watch season 1 again and again.
Heroes, Prison Break,The Unit... those shows suck there are other ensemble that could have fit better.. ER, Gossip Girl, even NCIS or CSI are better.
SAG awards are just joke.
No FNL, no The Wire. I give up. If actors can't even notice the best amongst themselves.
Heroes et al. were nominated for being a stunt ensemble: that means the stunt folks are being recognized, not the actors. That's a perfect place to recognize an otherwise underappreciated group.
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. GOD. I think if it ever did get nominated I would die of shock.
Battlestar Galactica is the best show to never get nominated. Hey maybe that should be a category.
This list is so not exciting at all.
But please let Michael C Hall get his recognition already.
I would take the two Boston Legal guys out and put Bryan Cranston and Miguel from Dexter in there.
I would also replace Weeds {which totally sucked this year),with Californication (which totally rocked.)
In the comedy category, I would replace Tony Shaloub or Jeremy Piven with Callum Keith. Abolutely!
And I say, David Duchovny is not a [meh] but a total YAY! He OWNS this category.
The Wire and BSG. That's all that needs to be said.
No Pushing Daisies or LOST? Are the people on crack? That's insane!
Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad should definitely be recognized.
no big bang theory, If they didn't want to nominate the show Jim Parson at least deserves to be nominated. Sheldon is much funnier than Liz and Jack on that 30 Crap show. I watched one episode and it was painful.
Another WTF on The Shield. I don't understand why this show gets no respect past Season 1.
