When's MTV gonna change its stupid name already? With the recent announcement regarding its reality show-heavy slate of new shows (16 new ones in all), it's like they're not even trying to pretend they have anything to do with music anymore. It's not even like on VH1, where the shows are sort of vaguely related to music via their hosts (Rock of Love, Charm School, etc.). It's just pure unmitigated trizzash.
Not that I'm complaining. Once we get the semiotics taken care of, I don't mind saying I'll be the first to check some of these new shows out. Not on the strength of this pretentious-ass statement from MTV prez Brian Graden, mind you: "Our shows are going to focus less on loud and silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves. These are themes that are consistent with the Obama generation." No, it'll be more on the strength of the type of programming I can only assume he's referring to obliquely, i.e. last year's excellent The Paper.
The new roundup of shows will include College Life (which sounds like The Blair Witch Project goes to college), The Girls of Hedsor Hall (Charm School redux) and a Fame-style one about kids attending Cincinnati's School of Creative and Performing Arts that'll be produced by none other than Nick Lachey.
Okay, so it's not the raddest reality show news in the history of the world (which reminds me, when the bleep are they going to air that damned RuPaul show for god's sake?), but it's better than infinity more seasons of The Hills. I'm trying to be charitable here! It's my new thing!
What do you think of the new schedule of shows? Care? Not care? Plead the fifth?

None of these shows sound very good, but there could be some "Rock of Love"-style reality TV gems amongst the dreck.
