To Be or Not to Be George

To Be or Not to Be George

I don't know what the hell is going on over at Grey's Anatomy lately (and I'm not just talking about the disaster that is unfolding on screen). My pal Ausiello at EW says T.R. Knight quit. That always reliable source Us Magazine says that he's not going anywhere. I'm leaning towards believing Ausiello, but I'm totally biased. Frankly, all I can hope is that the formerly adorable and now useless George gets the hell out of dodge and takes his little dog too (and by little dog I mean that whiny bitch Katherine Heigl... in case that wasn't clear enough).

Don't get me wrong, I used to love T.R. Knight's George. He was so sweet and endearing, but that was before they made the wretched decision to have his character cheat on his wife and hook up with, of all people, his supposed best pal Izzie. I supported Knight whole-heartedly through Isaiahgate and was rooting for him to have a nice workplace to go to. But it seems that all he's gotten in return is off-putting storylines and goofball subplots, from being the chief's brown-nosing intern to being oblivious to Lexie's affections to moving out of Casa de Meredith where all the other doctors live to having little to do aside from speculate on Izzie's well being.

George is stuck in quite the crossroads. He's not quite hot enough to compete with the big boys for the girls and as a resident who recently stepped up from being an intern, there's no way he can really get the respect or earn any of the surgeries that the others will get. Was he even a contender for the recent solo surgery? Would you trust him to amputate your limb if you knew he'd had to repeat a year? I don't think so.

If T.R. actually asked to be let out of his contract, or outright quit, or whatever the proper legalese is about this situation, I kind of have to give him credit. He's probably tired of showing up for work and just standing there with nothing to do. Instead of pulling a Heigl and waiting until after the fact and then complaining vocally during Emmy consideration time (not that she deserved to be nominated but that's a whole different story), he kind of did the manly thing and just stepped aside gracefully.

And with the hot mess that is that show right now, I can't actually say that I blame him. I'd want to get out of there too and hope for greener pastures that had better writing and storylines that didn't involve necrophilia. Though being a more cautious sort, perhaps I would have waited until AFTER I'd found a new job prospect before handing in my walking papers. These are tough times. I just would hate to see the seemingly sweet Knight working at the In-N-Out Burger because he couldn't find a new gig. He's a unique sort of actor, so he might have a difficult time getting cast in another high-profile role. So I worry for him, but aside from him not having a job... I'm not really all that sad to see him go because his character stopped being interesting to me more than a season ago. With that cast being overstuffed as it is, and the recent upheaval with the whole Hahn thing, the best I can hope for is that he gets some sort of resolution, and isn't just mentioned in passing like Washington and Brooke Smith, like "Oh, he used to work here and now he doesn't." Even though his character has gotten the shaft lately, he deserves better than that.

What are your thoughts? Would you be happy to see George leave? Do you think T.R. Knight would be making a huge mistake? Sound off below.
