While we were working on last week's shows that were canceled too soon, we couldn't help but think about the shows, like JAG, that just dragged on forever and ever, with seemingly no end. Did anyone actually watch all million seasons of Wings? We highly doubt it. So we came up with this week's list of shows that deserved to be axed long before they finally were. There were so many more (Everybody Loves Raymond and Will & Grace, we're lookin' at you) that narrowly missed making the cut. And we limited the list to just recent shows, because if we'd started back with Happy Days, we'd have had to do this as a ten part series.
1. Friends
When they said they'd be there for us, we didn't think they meant forever. This sitcom gave us some laughs, but really stopped being funny long about the time Ross and Rachel had a baby and decided not to get married. And then it spawned a spinoff as well? That's really beating a dead horse, because how many times can you hear "How You Doin'?" before you wanna haul off and smack someone?
2. X-Files
The truth may be out there, but we stopped caring about finding it during Season 8, when Mulder stopped being a series regular and Doggett came on. No offense to Robert Patrick, but half of the appeal of this show was the relationship between Mulder and Scully, and with that gone, there was just a string of monsters of the week to hang on to, and that's not enough. And don't think we've forgotten the mess that was The Lone Gunmen spinoff either.
3. 7th Heaven
After ten seasons, a finale date was set. They filmed an ending where everyone lived happily ever after and apparently that meant that they were all pregnant... with twins. But the ending did so well in the ratings that TBTB got the harebrained idea to keep it around for another season, who cares that the writers had written themselves into a corner in their attempt to give their fans closure. Thankfully, few people wanted to see more of the ever-expanding Camden clan and we were finally put out of our misery, though it came at least a season too late.
4. West Wing
We love Aaron Sorkin and his well-crafted dialogue, but after he (and Tommy Schlamme) signed off after Season 4, the show was just never the same. The acting quality didn't falter, but the voice just wasn't as strong. We know that they wanted to keep the show running for the entirety of Bartlet's presidency, but sometimes, you've just got to know when to call it quits.
5. 90210
High school series in general should take a lesson from this one. Stay in school, or at the very least, if you follow them to college, let that be the end of it. The plots get more and more unbelievable, the entire cast loses the ability to convincingly look like a teenager and it devolves into even more of a soap opera than it ever intended to be. Some TV characters just shouldn't grow old. And some TV series just shouldn't be remade.
6. Frasier
In our opinion, Frasier should have left the building about the time they decided to actually pair Niles and Daphne up. The duo was best with their flirting and fun, don't sitcom writers know by now that putting their lovelorn characters together only serves to kill the chemistry? But this show was a big moneymaker, so it kept kicking around as everyone started phoning it in until the bitter, bitter end.
7. ER
We didn't include any currently running programs on the list, but since ER has announced that this is its final season, we felt it was fair game. There have been so many times over the years that they could have easily ended it, and almost did, but they kept bringing it back. When Noah Wyle, the last original cast member to stick with the show, signed off, it would have been a perfect time to cut ties. Instead they've kept this show on life support for a few years by adding a string of new characters. We're anxious to bid this one a fond farewell already.
8. Charmed
How did this show last eight seasons while something like Angel (just as an example) only got five? It just doesn't make any sense. Charmed was a light ball of fluff in the sci fi world, and while there were occasional episodes that were standouts, it just never reached the level of quality that it could have. Frankly, we lost interest when Shannen Doherty left, because if we learned nothing else from original 90210, its that where that witch goes, it's best to follow.
9. Alias
It sort of pained us to admit it, because this is a favorite, but it just really stopped being good towards the end. The plots were convoluted and even the costumes weren't really all that fun any more. Vaughn's not even Vaughn? Really? And don't even get us started on the horrors that are Lauren Reed and Nadia. And their attempts to make this show more accessible to regular viewers, who were confused by Rambaldi stuff, only made more a mess of things. Sad but true.
10. NYPD Blue
Twelve seasons of Dennis Franz's pale ass being shown off is too much for anyone to handle. And trying to replace someone as amazing as Jimmy Smits with Rick "Ricky" Schroeder followed by Mark-Paul "Zack Morris!" Gosselaar was too much to take. Its hard to buy former tween stars on a gritty series.
Bonus Show: Viva Laughlin
It may have only aired two episodes (and barely that), but that was probably two too many if you ask us. How this series even got past the pilot stage is a mystery. A musical show about murder and gambling may have flown over the UK, but was just a little too weird, even with Melanie Griffith and Hugh Jackman involved. Just thinking about the karaoke quality of it makes our head hurt.
Thoughts? Other shows that are missing? Let us know.

Hopefully is there is a good on heaven when you do this list next year you can add Smallville to it. A show that should had ended on season five and that we are hearing the horrible rumor that it might get a 9th season...without Clark Kent. Talk about not knowing when to quit!
My vote is for Boston Legal. I enjoyed the Practice, but even that show knew when to hang it up. The fact they spun this waste of a show from the Practice irks me, even more because James Spader steals acting awards from some of my favorite show-headers. And don't get me started on 'Denny Crane. Denny Crane'.
I'm with you on The West Wing and The X-Files. I was a HUGE X-Philie, but after Mulder left and Scully had their kid? Ugh. And they killed The Lone Gunman, which really pissed me off. And then the second movie was just one giant fan fiction written by Chris Carter! Sigh. What a disappointment.
And The West Wing fired their lighting guy in season 4, because every episode was shot in half dark, and that just got as annoying as Sam was sometimes.
I wholeheartedly agree with ana's comment above
God help me, but I'm going to say it: Roseanne. Lottery... Darlene gets married in Disney World? Dan has been dead? WHAT!?
I can't believe you didn't mention the Simpsons. That's past its prime by over a decade now.
I know you said you were not including current shows, but if you were, According to Jim would have to be at the top of the list. I can't believe that show even made it past season 1, and I had no idea it was even still on until it popped up on my tv last week, unbeknownst to me, with a "brand new season." I was like, "Are you kidding me? This piece of crap is still being paid for while they are cancelling Pushing Daisies? Wow, lowest common denominator indeed!" So sad.
Ok Chris, them's fighting words about Boston Legal. I'm still said that it ended this past Monday.
Full House, anyone? Really any sitcom where they have to keep having people have babies to hook in the cutness factor.
Hopefully Two and a Half Mena dn the New Adventures of Old Christine will be eligible for this list shortly...
I am personally go with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now I do consider myself a huge Buffy fan and I love rematching episodes. But it is season 6 where the show seems to plummet, and the final season was nothing but one big painful mess of horrible writing and plot. Personally I feel it should have ended at season 5. I'm not even going to touch on the "Season 8" comics that were released (since this is about tv) but I find those just as terrible too.
One Tree Hill. Enough said.
One Tree Hill. Enough said.
Man, I remember being so angry that '7th Heaven' was renewed (after it had already been cancelled) but my beloved 'Everwood' couldn't catch a break. Although honestly - and this list backs me up, I think - most shows really shouldn't go past four or five seasons anyway, so maybe it's a good thing it ended when it did. The memory wasn't tainted at all.
How about "House"? Hugh Laurie is as watchable as ever, but come on. Every episode has the patient being misdiagnosed to the point of death, and then correctly diagnosed and cured in the last 7 minutes. I love the diaglogue for Dr. House, but the premise of the show is old.
It pains me, but I must add BTVS. Or at least the final half or so of the final season. Stop speechifying, Buffy! Stop! Speechifying!
Scrubs, pure genius to soulless dreck in only 4 seasons, and then they made 3 or 4 more seasons...
That 70s Show, anyone? It seemed like they wanted that show on long enough for Mila Kunis to date every single cast member, up to and including Red. ER - great choice. In my mind, the series ends right as the helicopter is about to land on Romano. He suddenly snaps out of it and realizes he's having a serious panic attach, walks back into County General, resigns and goes off to start a private practice. The end.
Law & Order. What's it been... 48 seasons so far? Formulaic and boorrrring from the beginning and yet somehow allowed to continue forever. All of it's evil spawn can go too.
I see your That 70s Show and raise you a Grey's Anatomy. You can't really go back from having sex with a dead man.
They totally should have ended The X-Files with Mulder getting abducted in Oregon. It would've been the perfect ending!
Also on my list - One Tree Hill. CSI. Ally McBeal. Nip/Tuck (I love Nip/Tuck, but seasons 4 & 5 were terrible. New York? Seriously?).
I agree Alex...Grey's Anatomy has gone downhill since they brought dead Denny into the mix. Puhlease!
Seriously, the second Johnny Depp left 21 Jump Street Fox should have pulled the plug. Instead we got treated to Booker and a bloated and unfunny Penhall. Very Sad!
I second EmperorSeth...the Simpsons both sucks and blows, and has for quite a few years now. Pity.
Yes, you've got to include Buffy on this list, and Las Vegas, which somehow was on the air for 5 seasons. And SVU - how long has that thing been on? This list could be a twop 100, I think.
Special credit to the show Ed, which knew exactly when to end.
Vegas, Smallville, That 70s Show should have ended with Topher Grace leaving. How is Numb3rs still on?
Maybe its because I was the same age as the Dawson's Creek characters, but that show should have left highschool when I did - and not followed me to college. Awful, awful, awful

Buffy could have stopped at the musical episode and it would have been a fantastic ending. Instead, we got Dead Tara, Evil Willow, Spuffy, and the Potential Slayers. Shut up, Joss.
I'd add Prison Break to this list...God would they please kill it already. They haven't had a clear direction for the show since the actual prison break and I've invested this much time thinking they'd finally admit that and end it, yet it goes on and on and ON...
Anybody for Monk? granted, Tony Shalhoub is quirky and funny, but there's a whole list of bad kids' movies he's missing by continuing on this show. I think it would leave a huge hole in USA's programming, though.
Actually, I loved ALL the shows on this list, except for 7th Heaven and NYPD Blue. Here's my top 10 of shows that went on (or are still going on) past their prime:
SURVIVOR
King of Queens
Roseanne
According to Jim
Ally McBeal
The Bachelor
The Bachelorette
Trading Spaces
Flava of Love
The Apprentice
Will & Grace should have ended when the original writers left. After that, all of the characters lost any brains or common sense. Everybody was dumbed down. Will became shrill & annoying. Any plotline involving a baby was a horrible idea & don't even get me started on the finale...
I agree that Buffy should be on the list...I love the show dearly, but it stopped being actively fun to watch somewhere in season 5 (I am of the contingent that believes they jumped the shark when they introduced Dawn), was downright depressing for most of season 6 and got pretty irritating in season 7 (what with the houseful of whiny potential slayers). Not that I don't still own every season...but still.
I second your Buffy love/angst. As much as it would have pained me to see the show end after season 5, and as much as I loved the musical, it's true that the second half of season 6 and all of season 7 were a sorry mess.
ITA with Alias. In hindsight, it would have been better if it had ended after season 2. Seasons 1-2 were some of the best television ever. To watch a beloved show became a suck fest was apparently not enough for JJ & Co, however, they had to assassinate Sydney's character by having her choose to endanger her unborn baby's life by repeatedly going and unnecessarily going on field missions and lastly, by killing off Jack Bristow. I haven't been able to watch my S1-2 dvds since the fiasco of a series finale.
I would also second Avery's nomination of Will and Grace which went from 'must see tv' to 'must avoid tv'.
You guys are wrong on Friends, the West Wing, and Frasier
The Cosby Show. Once cousin whatshername showed up and you couldn't figure out who was doing what and where it was all over.
The Gilmore Girls should never have gone on after Amy Sherman-Palladino left. Unwatchable.
That 70s Show
The Simpsons
Sliders
Friends
Roseanne
Family Guy
I agree with ending BTVS after Season 6 musical. They could have found a way.
ITA about Smallville, ER, and That 70s Show. End when your main character (or every original cast member)leaves, damnit!
I'll go along with Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Season 5 (after an interesting but inconsistent Season 4) was unremarkable but not actively bad, however the show went *way* off the tracks as far too much responsibility devolved to Marti Noxon who had nowhere near enough experience to handle it and never really came back.
I will respectfully voice disagreement on West Wing, as the show actually improved in the last couple seasons compared wtih the utter suck that was the last half of Season 3/Season 4. The election in the last season actually stands respectfully third compared to the series brilliant first 2 seasons. As for X-Files, the wheels started to come loose well before SEason 8, as it became increasingly clear circa Season 5 that they were never going to have an explanation that was really clear for the underlying plot.
I second the vote for Scrubs. I enjoy it and all, but really, enough is enough. Quirky can only last for so many seasons.
Whenever someone mocks the casting of Rick Schroeder on NYPD Blue, I assume they didn't actually watch. He was amazing on that show and his character was unique and well written.
Each and every version of Law & Order. Dum, dum.
Can I still mock the casting of Mark Paul Gossler on NYPD Blue, though?
Adding my vote to "Scrubs" and "That 70s Show". The early seasons of the latter are pure gold, but the quality started to slide marginally in the later seasons and then, once topher left and they decided to continue...the hell? With Topher 2.0 (blech) and Jackie breaking up with Hyde and going back to Michael then Fez, and Kelso getting a girl pregnant, it was all so convoluted.
And while I'm still loyal to "Scrubs" and am happy to see another season of it, the will they won't they with Eliot and J.D. is just getting old (I really only tune in for the supporting characters and snappy dialogue now). But I heard a rumour that Zach Braff is planning on leaving at the end of the last season, but the creators are pushing for at least one more, J.D. less season. WHY!!! J.D. is the heart of that show. Just bow out gracerfully people.
The premise of House got old and predictable during the second episode - the show was always only about Hugh Laurie´s watchability.
My favorite show: Babylon 5.
They knew it was canceled part-way through season 4 and so the writer/creator sped up the plot lines and resolved the whole 5-year arc in 4 seasons.
Then it got renewed for a 5th season. Which was a lousy season. I own all of the DVDs and I never re-watch season 5. Writer/director J. Michael Straczynski admits it and has a good excuse - his detailed outlines for the first several episodes got tossed out when he was at a hotel for a convention, and he had to scramble like mad to get scripts in the hopper for filming.

The Simpsons should DEFINITELY be on this list, but yet it still seems to be on.

As soon as I read the title, Alias jumps to mind. Seasons 1 and 2 were brilliant, 3 and 4 were decent. I actually have edited the last episode of Season 4 to give it more finality and pretend there was no Season 5.
Roseanne-Darlene getting pregnant and dropping out of college to marry the perpetually unemployed David still pisses me off.
Law and Order SVU-once Mariska started getting award recognition the show went in the toilet.
The X-Files-No Mulder no show.
Every David E. Kelly series-Every single one of them overstayed their welcome.
That 70's show-Fez and Jackie? Really? Terrible end.
The Sopranos-great acting but they should have wrapped it a season or two sooner.
Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me-I'm calling time on all of them, and Weeds is getting there.
Thank you for mentioning 7th Heaven...I stupidly watched the final season and it was terrible! It should've never happened.
The only good thing that ever came from Charmed were Demian's recaps on TWOP! They still manage to crack me up :D
Agree about Friends. I loved it, but the ninth and tenth seasons had maybe four good jokes between the two.
Prison Break should have been over after season two. I was going to stop watching when Sara was decapitated but for some reason couldn't...then I was going to stop watching when they brought her back to life, but I still couldn't...then I was going to stop after the slutty schoolgirl nonsense, and yet I'm still watching...I wonder what this says about me?
ITA about Prison Break...even though it's one of my favorite shows on TV right now :)
I can't believe that no one has mentioned American Idol. Seriously, the show needs to die, and die quickly. I lost interest in it after the second season. It's still on 40 seasons later. America has had maximum Seacrest/Abdul exposure. Plus, the talent isn't getting any better.
Also, Smallville got old when Clark Kent graduated from high school, which was...forever ago.
not to mention that in the last two seasons every episode had a special celebrity guest star. i guess they figured that if they couldn't turn out a good storyline or any good jokes, guest stars would bring in the ratings. seriously, shame on all of the writers and producers.
I agree with all of the shows listed above. In addition, I'd like to add America's Top Model. Maybe it doesn't count since it's a reality show, but it has gotten completely ridonkulous. And not one of the girls has made it to top model status yet. I'd also like to add Entourage - it was funny the first season or two but has gone way, way downhill since.
Wow, considering how much BUFFY love there is on the 'net(especially on sites like this), I'm surprised to see it mentioned so often. Of course, it's true that it went on too long, but still. Anyway, the king of shows that hung on too long is ER, and it's almost torturous to think about considering ER used to be my all-time favorite. The fact that it's STILL ON, about 6-7 years after it should've ended, has pretty much ruined it's legacy, certainly my view of it. Is there any cast member from before season 10 that's still there? Didn't anyone at NBC find the idea of Uncle Jessie headlining a once-great DRAMA series an obvious warning sign?! He was on f---in' FULL HOUSE for God's sake!
House used to be so much funnier than it is now. At some point, everybody started to take it too seriously, when it used to be just Wilson did. As I remember, they have always misdiagnosed the patient and nearly killed them several times before the end of the show. It would be better if they had two or more cases going, like in the one where House was teaching a class and telling them about several different cases, and it turned out one of them was his case. I thought they were changing the format of the show, but they weren't. At some point, I started thinking of him as a pathetic, seriously dysfunctional old perv.
For an older show, the original Cosby show, when they brought in Raven-Symone because Rudy "wasn't cute enough" and St. Elsewhere. It got really bad at the end, with the sheep, and then the finale was totally stupid.
For another oldie I would like to add family matters. I loved Urkel but the Stephan crap was too much.
24
The premis of the show was there would only be 24 episodes, ever.
There never should have been a season 2, let alone a season 6.
It pains me to say it, but House just isn't great any more. The formula is stale, and the supporting cast just does nothing for me, with the exception of Cuddy and Wilson. I love the medical mysteries and Hugh Laurie, but I no longer love the show.
The other show I love but think should end is Scrubs. I honestly don't like JD that much (mostly because Zach Braff bugs the hell out of me), but if they took him out of the show it just wouldn't work. There are only so many his/her/their stories they can do (although I assume they'll cast JD v.2 instead). Also, I wish everyone would quit having babies. I think the series would have done well to have ended the way it was supposed to pre-strike.
The Star Trek franchise, especially after Brannon Braga got the keys to the kingdom. Talk about somebody who didn't have a clue.
The Stargate franchise. TPTB of Stargate must be related to Braga.
I think current shows are fair game, too, so House tops my list. I agree with a poster above. House is pretty much a bitter old perv who will never change. It's a tired formula with an ultimately unlikeable lead. I love Hugh Laurie but I don't love House.
The entire HGTV network. How many shows about buying/selling/staging a house for $5 does one network need? And, call me crazy, but I'd like to see a gardening show once in a while.
American Idol/Survivor/Amazing Race. The fights. The tears. The bleeped out diatribes. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Two and a Half Men, Law & Order, ER--need to pass peacefully in their sleep--tonight.
On the suject of Buffy...I loved Season 6. I was going through an emotionally devestating time when it aired. Watching Buffy's struggles that season felt oddly familiar. Yes, it was a rather depressing season, but it got me through a depressing year. But Season 7 was a mess, so if they had tied up the exisiting stories better at the end of 6, it would have been a better end.
The funny thing about Viva Laughlin was that it was fairly successful as a British mini series (Blackpool) - it even won a BAFTA. Though I think that was because Blackpool had Davids Tennant and Morrisey, and Viva Laughlin had ... Hugh Jackman. Ugh.
Just another example of how Americans try to take brilliant British shows, adapt them, and then make them complete shit.
I think all the "reality" TV have been on for too long, especially Survivor and American Idol. How many times can a show do the same thing over and over? Just end the entire "reality" TV genre.
Couldn't agree more with you about Gilmore Girls. They should not have continued without the Palladinos. I can't even watch season 7 without cringing.
And "Friends" was ammmaaaazzzzing! I loved every minute of it.
I'm scared The Office might make that list one day. Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but the past 2 seasons have lost some of that spark that made us adore it so much.
And I agree with the others about Grey's. Ghost sex means its time to call it quits.
One Tree Hill - how they ever canceled Gilmore Girls and left that dreck on baffles me.
Quantum Leap - brilliant, quirky, and funny the first few seasons, then it not only jumped the shark, but the entire aquarium when they started having him leap into famous and infamous historical figures (Lee Harvey Oswald, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe) and when they brought in the Evil Leaper.
I'll agree that season 6 and most of 7 of Buffy were pretty much atrocious but I have to say I love the ending it had. If I have to sift through all that junk to get to the finale that we got I am glad to. Also, it gave a killer asset to Angel season 5.
I have to add Lost to the list. How it has gone on this long is beyond me. Seriously, this show got boring after the dude was sucked up into the airplane engine in the pilot.
Um, HEROES, that should have been left for the comic books after season one.
"add Smallville to it. A show that should had ended on season five and that we are hearing the horrible rumor that it might get a 9th season...without Clark Kent."
Now that is a terrible idea.
Disagree on Friends, it stayed good till season 10, and had a great ending (although season 7 wasn't the best).
You should add really bad shows like "According to Jim", "Still Standing", "Grounded for Life", "Yes, Dear". How did they last so long?
Buffy should have ended after season 5, and Angel after season 4.
Meant to say, a 9th season WITHOUT Clrak Kent is a bad idea (doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the show?), unless you make it a spin-off about Chloe, ace reporter. That I can get behind.
I don't think ABC realizes that "According to Jim" is still on.
You need to add 3 more shows. Charmed,Angel and Scrubs.
ITA about everything said about Buffy...I try to block out everything about the last season from my memory (so much potential, no pun intended, yet gone so horribly wrong).
Gilmore Girls I think lasted about two seasons too long. Lorelai and Luke getting together was just awful to watch and the writers made Luke into a totally unlikable character. I always HATED Logan and yet they kept putting him on my TV screen. When the Palladino's left, the writing just got awful...even the actors looked pained listening ot the words they had to say. I couldn't watch most of the last season because it felt too forced and awkward.
ALIAS Season 5 was a big pile of shit. The season was terrible and the finale was so disappointing.
About Buffy, season 6 is depressing, but has a lot of qualities (and I'm not talking exclusively about the musical). Season 6 was about the characters going wrong and messing up. Entertaining premise? Maybe not. Interesting? Yes! Was it a risky idea? Yes. Did it come with flaws? Yes ("magic = drugs" I'm looking at you). But the writers also scored. Maybe you can relate more to the storylines if you have gone depressed (like Buffy) or took a while to grow up (like Xander).
So they screwed their characters in season 6. They needed a season 7 to fix them, bring them back to the place where we loved them. And they failed. The seven first episodes were mostly entertaining and the characters were funny and likable again. But from "Sleeper" on, the season was a mess. I was glad that the finale was good, though.
So I don't think Buffy should have ended at season 5. Season 6, while flawed, has its strengths. What I wish is that season 7 had been happier and watchable.
Hey, just a thought: you could also make a list of shows that ended at the right moment. Those that kept most of the quality during their run and that knew the right moment to go out. There aren't many, I guess.
Buffy definitely went on way too long. I hated pretty much all the post-high school additions (Dawn the most), but I would have been OK with it ending when Buffy died. The UPN seasons were atrocious, and the ending was unsatisfying.
I'm one of the people who gave actual money to keep Veronica Mars on the air, and lived to regret that decision. I wish that one ended after 2 seasons.
And yeah, Charmed had some pretty miserable 6th & 7th season eps, and the 8th season was useless, but the last two episodes were great -- the perfect ending for the series, which I don't think they could have pulled off any earlier. So though it seemed to drag on & on at the time, in retrospect, Forever Charmed kind of made up for it. It was never a great show, like Buffy or VM, but at its best, it was light, mindless fun, so it gets a bit of a pass for going on as long as it did.
Tom L, I think Everwood ended at exactly the right moment. And maybe Six Feet Under. But those are the only two that come to mind.
Here's a blast from recent past: Roswell. It started out promising but seasons 2 and 3 were dreck and drecker.
ER is the obvious choice here. They dragged it on after the entire original cast left. They dragged it on after their clones left.
The show used to be so great, but they have completely mind raped all good memories I had about this show over the past 6 years. Romano and the chopper, the assification of Carter, the completely over the top political plotlines, ugh.
Moonlighting, Providence, Northern Exposure, Dallas
ITA with all of those. Plus BTVS, Frasier (I never found that show interesting at all), the Simpsons (how many years has it been? Come on get rid of it already), and my very unpopular opinion of family guy!!!!! I find that show occasionally amusing. Mostly though, I find it basically mind numbing. Funny but intensely stupid, IMHO.
One more, Prison Break. It definitely could have ended after season 2. It's still my favourite show, but I am hoping this is it's last year running.
Six Feet Under.
I don't understand this list because if people watch it, it will be ON. We don't have to like it, and it definitely doesn't have to be GOOD, since most TV is total CRAP. Shows that disappointed me after a period of time, which I ceased watching were ER (too many dead babies), Grey's Anatomy (I left when Hahn left, and I will never return), Ally McBeal.
Wow, all of these shows involve a main character having a brain tumor (well, Grey's maybe - we'll have to see what explains Izzy and Dead Denny). Maybe the true moment of shark jumping occurs at the exact moment a script writer says "Brain Tumor".
I totally agree. Dawson's Creek should've ended when they graduated high school.
America's Next Top Model anyone? It became a complete joke after Cycle 3. Also, The Real World and any "challenge" involving former RW/Road Rules cast members. I am so sick of seeing those losers on my TV screen. It's time for them to turn 40 and get a steady job.
Desperate Housewives. I watched for the first 2 seasons, and it tanked after that.
Then you really missed out, Paradise. The show was pretty bad in Season 2, but rebounded rather nicely during Season 3, and since has become a fun, must-see show again. Season 5 is still going strong. I suggest you catch up through DVDs and get back into it.
I hate to say it, but Lost has gone a bit too far. It feels like they are scrambling after every few episodes to continue the story, making it feel half-assed and last minute. The story never gets finished....and will it ever?
I have to go with Quantum Leap, though I think it might be better for a "Worst Final Season" list. I mean . . . vampires? "The Leap Between The States"? Evil Leaper? Dr. Friggin' Ruth?!? And Sam's leap into himself on his birthdate in a coal mining town, with a bartender than may or may not be God . . . WTF?!?
I really wish people would back off on Heroes. I enjoy the ride most of the time. Besides, Smallville has been a trainwreck for years, and yet it never gets on magazine covers with a "CAN THIS SHOW BE SAVED???" headline. After that fourth season, I'm amazed Jensen Ackles could find work, let alone starring on the superior Supernatural.
I agree and i think that most of the shows on the list shouldn't be there.
I don't agree with most of the shows that were on the list. Someone said Survivor, that may be right or at least limit it to one a year. And how about Walker Texas Ranger, the final season was not so special. And someone also said Boston Legal, if a show can't go a season without cast changes must be wrong with it. And it pains me to say this what about Hill Street Blues after the original Sergeant died, the show just didn't seem the same, and also the loss of Steven Bochco may have been a factor. And MASH, I mean how they were able to stretch a three year was into 11 seasons is beyond me. And how about Charlie's Angels, after Kate Jackson left the show was going downhill, it should have ended after they tried it with Shelly Hack but they tried it with Tanya Roberts still. And Love Boat, after the original Cruise Director left things were not the same. Simon & Simon is another, after Tim Reid left they should have called it quits. Dallas after that dream season, it's hard to know what's what. Especially since it's spin-off show Knots Landing was not affected by it.

No one has mentioned M*A*S*H? I don't know exactly when it should have ended, but I find most episodes after BJ grew his mustache pretty much unwatchable.
CSI should have ended years ago, but definitely once Sara & Grissom ended up in bed together.
Well I always thought Friends and Will & Grace sucked, the last few seasons just sucked a lot more. But it really hurts when fantastic shows like Scrubs or Alias become terrible. I didn't even understand the last season of Alias, it was like the writers reached into the bad idea hat and then started typing blindfolded.

Stargate SG-1 (last episode should have happened sometime between the final epsiodes of season 5 and 9.)
Star Trek: Deep Space 9
Charmed
Stargate SG-1
Frasier
Stargate SG-1
And did I mention Stargate SG-1? The last few seasons were so bad, they dragged down the spin-off, too. Has there ever been a spin-off series that got better when the original died?
Technically, I suppose, DS9 got better after Capt. Picard rode off into the sunset. But they were both spinoffs, so.
(I also agree w/Friends, ER, etc., but I never really watched them, so I have less investment in their incredible achievements in the field of lameness.)
Roswell wnet on to long, once they bought the new alien on i was like "uuuuhhhhh no!"
7th heaven once they had the twins....my problem was that ruthie clearly was adopted or something, and she seemed to smart to be raised in the same house with everyone else. I also though that there was something wrong with the twins and that should have been touched on.
BTVS should have been cancelled around the time that they brought dawn on...although i loved buffy and spike.
dawsons creek should have been cancelled when they graduated.
Roseanne, once they once the lottery, was a goner.
oh yeah and felicity should have gone off the air a season sooner
however some shows that i feel like we ripped off on include
my so called life
everwood
boston public
oh yeah "my wife and kids" should have been cancelled once jr. got vanessa pregnant
"boy meets world" should have been cancelled when they graduated high school
"90210" should have wrapped it up when ms. doherty left
im also done with "my super sweet 16"
and the "real world" could have stopped after back to new york
the "cosby show" was probably on its way out when they brough on olivia and "fresh prince" when the switched vivans and brought on little nicky
7th Heaven should get some special award because not only did it get nine seasons more than it deserved, it was RESURRECTED like Jesus and dragged out for a bonus season. Remember the episode where the family experiences reverse racism all about how poor white people are so picked on in these modern times? Or the one where the people with no money spend all their food stamps on designer clothing and it was followed by a PSA that this is a problem with welfare? AHH.
In hindsight, it would have been better if it had ended after season 2. Seasons 1-2 were some of the best television ever.
The end of Alias frustrated me too. Although I don't necessarily think they had to end it there -- seasons 1 and 2, as you said, were brilliant, and season 3 -- despite the HORRIBLE Lauren Reed actually had a couple decent episode arcs. But by season 5, I was whining to my TV about the repetitive characters/plotlines and begging the continuity fairy to come back.
Yep. S6 of Gilmore Girls was bad and it definitely should have ended when the Palladinos left. Loved Luke/Lorelai, but the on-again, off-again, on-again and then off-again ad nauseum thing just got old. And don't even get me started on Rory. She turned out to be a much more dead-eyed and shallow girl than I ever thought possible. I blame Logan somehow...

Yes the season that never should have been.
How could "Family Matters" not make the list??
ER - definitely. I've been saying this for years. Once Anthony Edwards left it woulda been time to say goodbye.
Law and Order - enough already. If I hear that dong sound one more time I'm going to go mad.
dunno if its been mentioned yet but desperate housewives. went way downhill after season 2 argh. went from makeing appointments around it to making appointments during it

My Name Is Earl-Do they even still reference "the list"? I gave up on this at least 2 seasons ago.
How I Met Your Mother-Find the b**ch already. Is he even trying at this point? It seems more likely that Robin and Barney will get married or at least pregnant.
Worst Week-I know it's only in it's first season but has already worn out it's welcome. The concept was great as British comedy setup with a short series that might return in a year or two when they have something else funny to cover: i.e., birth of their 1st child, buying their 1st home, vacation/anniversary/holidays(Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's)
Like Smallville, the 1st 2 can't go away because none have completed their story arcs: Clark hasn't become Superman (learned to fly, got a cape/costume), Earl hasn't finished making amends and Ted hasn't met anyone.
Speaking of finding "the one" and getting married, how long did they think they would have been able to jerk us around with "The Ex-List"?
the real world--should have ended after new orleans. dont even get me started on their casting process now
who's the boss--cant believe that i ever watched it but after they put tony and angela together, forget it
family matters--the switched networks and brought on a new harriet??
smallville--used to be a weekly ritual for me but stopped after the fifth.
charmed--never should have gotten rid of shannen, but they actually managed to make it work with the fourth season. the fifth had its moments but still sucked. the sixth didnt even make sense. the seventh had its moments and the eight was just pathetic
queer as folk--shouldnt have necessarily been cancelled earlier, but the last season just seemed like repeating the same plot points from earlier ones.
weeds--hopefully this one wont make it on to the list next season. it continues to completely change as a show each season, and they do it well. although u-turn couldnt have died soon enough. started as a desperate housewives with pot, now they are mexican drug smugglers. but getting rid of conrad and heylia? big mistake
friends--the season after ross and emily almost marry should have been the last. they destroyed the character of monica and made her the most annoying person on television to watch, and made joey way too stupid (e.g. the french tutorial with phoebe) and how many episodes could they do with ross' physical appearance (his teeth are too white, he got too tan in the spray tan, he is wearing the same blouse as his date)
I disagree with Jasmine. Desperate Housewives sucked in S2, but is fun again...few shows can regain and resurge, but this one did.
Friends should have ended after S8, but it was still watchable and funny, unlike many series in this list.
The Real World does need to end, though. And ER should have ended long ago. Ally Mcbeal should have ended when Robert Downey Jr left.
I agree with the Lee HArvey Oswald episode which was only done because DB had an encounter with Lee Harvey Oswald while he was int eh MArines. However, the Marilyn and Elvis epeisodes were earlier in the series and were brilliant. The evil Leaper needed to just DIAF.
Totally agree with Buffy. Show should have ended when Buffy jumped into that vortex.
ER.
This was a great show, but it went bad after Dr Green died.
By the way, they never explained how Romano's arm was chopped off horizontally when the helicopter's tail rotor spins vertically.
Any show has outlasted its welcome when formerly-loved characters become annoying, pathetic, and lastly, repellent. Yes, SCRUBS, I'm looking at you.
A show that ended just right? THE SHIELD. I totally ignored the Glenn Close season, but everything else was excellent. In fact, so much happened during its run that I can't believe it wasn't on longer. On the subject of shows that should have been gone sooner: CHEERS, JUST SHOOT ME, THE DREW CAREY SHOW, practically every sitcom in history. I will not even get started on SCRUBS...
Heroes is now the worst show on television. Season 1 was good, but then Mohinder became a monster and it seemed as if someone would die, but no one would STAY dead.
Have to disagree on Friends ... it was actually much better in the final two seasons than it had been the previous three, which redeemed the show. I'd have hated for it to fizzle out when it was at its worst.
You know ER has been on too long when I'd rather watch Noah Wyle in those wretched godawful Librarian films than the show that he left.
I have never been angrier at my television set than while watching the series finale of Alias. So glad the fine actors from this series ended up doing good work on other shows.
Speaking of Ron Rifkin, one show I want to put on warning that (I believe) no one's mentioned: Brothers & Sisters. Season 3 has been better than 2, but whenever they get too involved in the stupid daytime storylines (which brother is the artificial-insemination father of the third brother's kid? sex with a secretary? sex with the girl who you thought was your sister five minutes ago?), they take the focus on the genius of the ensemble cast, and no one wants to see that. I'd rather they end it soon than drag it into territory that puts them on this list.

agree with everything but Friends & Charmed. they are both awesome shows, and both were amazing... though I do wish Charmed had stopped at 7 seasons, the 8th was a bit of a blow, apart from the couple of hot sex scenes hahaha
I would absolutely need to add Seinfeld to this list. Once they started making a tv show inside the tv show...it had gone on too long.

I totally agree. One Tree Hill was good in the beginning but I guess that everyone has to get hooked up with everyone else before they realize when they take something too far.
I couldn't agree more.Charmed and FRIENDS are good shows.Charmed ends at exactly the right time it should. And the last two episodes were so great.Like the ending.

Charmed is a good show,please.
I enjoy wacthing every episodes of it. Charmed forever.Instead, you should add Law & Order and One Tree Hill to that list. They suck and keep dragging on and on.
I really hated the final seasons of Seinfeld. I don't know how long it went on for and I can't pin point when it went bad but I still upchuck a little in my mouth every time I hear someone making a popping noise with their mouths.
Big Brother anyone? Oh wait a minute this is a list of shows that went for too long and that is a show which should never have aired.
Heroes... I was willing to forgive one crap season (2) but I will not stick around for another. Fool me once...
Disagree entirely on West Wing. The show was weak when Sorkin initially left, but the 6th and 7th seasons were actually my favorites.

What? I can't believe that Charmed is on that list!In fact, prison break should be added to that list,it's only worth watching for season 1.
I hear the BTVS comments, but come on, every show WAS NOT GOLDEN, even in the golden yrs (1-3). There were always a few clunkers.
I Robot, You Jane
Reptile Boy
Inca Mummy Girl
Go Fish (!!!)
Bad Eggs
Gingerbread
The Prom (although the main characters' stories are good, the bad guy, Hellhounds, and Tucker who later leads to Andrew were awful for a near season ender. Couldn't they have just tangled w/ the Mayor a bit more before Grad pts 1 & 2?)
What the hell, Tthe practice while a good show for a while it was populated by pretty people playing scumbags who did whatever they could get murderers off for money then whined about it afterward. While Boston Legal was funny and questioned everthing about the powers that be while that twit Bush was in office at least one tv comedy/drama dared poke fun at him and his ilk and Denny Crane is one of the best tv charcters along with Alan Shore Spader and Shatner both deserved the Emmys they got.

Caome on America wake up and realise that 30rock is a pile of predictable crap with awful acting and worse scripts. Alec Baldwin bbeing funny just cringeworthy and Tracy oh his mad he's angry he's black no he's just unfunny.
Grey's Anatomy never ever as good as everybody claimed it to be not even as good as the most suckfest ER storyline a few good characters i.e Chang and Bailey, Isaiah Washington's character b4 they fired him but none of it makes up for the wettest most pointless twit of a lead charater and the dull will they/won't they with the equally wet dr Mcdreary.
I agree that House has gone down the tubes- I stopped watching partway through the third season, despite the fact that I adore Hugh Laurie. It's just too predictable. Bones should have been stopped before the Zack debacle. Finally, as much as I love HIMYM, I really want Ted to find the mother so we can just shut it down. I'm tired of Ted.
You're kidding right? Season 6 was bad but out of the first 5, seasons 4 and 5 were the best. 24 is a great show.
Veronica Mars. The first season was pure genius, but season two was only adequate, and the third was just plain bad.
Also, I still watch Scrubs, but it has really declined in quality and the plots and relationships aren't that interesting anymore. It's just time for it to go.
Well given the two parameters of this list: The (CLEARLY STATED) fact that shows still on the air are not up for discussion and the implied fact that the shows need to be recent enough for people under the age of 25 will know about them, I think it's a pretty damn good list.
If you go back a little further in time, you'll find TONS of shows. Heck, you could pretty much name this list after Happy Days and nobody would even blink an eye.
If you want another one to add to the list, I would say that Home Improvement fits. Any sitcom where the kids grow from cute to annoying teenagers always fits.
To go in a different direction, you could also say pretty much every popular show on The Food Network has lasted at least three seasons too long. Rachael Ray's first three takes on Mac and Cheese were interesting. The last 14? Not so much.
Eat Merde, Janna ;(
Charmed- It was like eating fairy floss. Sure, you enjoy the first few bites of sugary goodness, but half the way through you realize you've just given yourself diabetes and your legs need cutting off.
BtVS-When you're seeing comparisons between vampire slayage and teen counselling, it's time to go.
X-Files- When the aliens who kidnapped your sister turn out to be the government, then aliens again, then an invisible child protection agency...you wonder if Chris Carter actually reads his old scripts or relies on Fox's episode guides for what happened 5, 7, 8 seasons ago.
Crossing Jordan-not that this show was ever good...and I only ever saw one episode...but that was so painful I was forced to sit in a damp room for 24hrs listening to Pierce Brosnan sing Christmas Carols in order to recover.
Angel-I'm sorry, but yes, it did, and yes, I'm going to a Special Level of Hell.
The Practise. ZZzzzzzzzzz*snort* huh?
Dawson's Creek. Like a traffic accident happening right in front of you, you know you should look away and yet...
So many shows, so little time. Since I'm not allowed to do the ones currently on...I've run out of self-righteous anger. Now if we were to talk about shows that SHOULD be cancelled......
What about CSI:Miami, that show is beyond ridiculous anymore. And isn't this topic just a renaming of when shows "jumped the shark." The OC should've snded when Marissa was killed. American Idol, Survivor, Amazing Race, Wife Swap, should've ended when they were pitched to the networks.
Simpsons is #1 for being past its former glory. I groan at the lame humor. Some shows don't even get one laff! But I still enjoy the Treehouse of Horror shows.
Actually the last years of Star Trek DS9 got better because the big story arc connected all the episodes. The characters and story were deeper, more mysterious and dramatic.
American Idol for sure, friends, all of the Law & Orders, E.R., Survivor, Family Matters & Roseanne once she had her fat little baby!
SMALLVILLE stopped being fun in season 4. They did some good CPR on season 5, but as of season 6, the show is spiralling down... it does not seem to meet the ground already. Clark is terribly annoying, and season 7 and 8 are much ado about nothing. have Clark fly already... as far away as possible.
My vote for shows that stayed past their prime: Roseanne, Family Matters, Full House, ER, According to Jim, Step by Step, and many others which I can not think of right now.
As for some of the other show mentioned, I have enjoyed Buffy, Charmed and Angel, and Smallville. I think that each episode (however, not stellar) lead to a larger part of the journey that each of the characters have had to go on. I still look forward to watching each episode in reruns.
I was addicted to Seinfeld while it was on. Now as I watch re-runs day after day it becomes clear that when Larry David stopped writing for it after season 7 it lost its steam. We ended up with two additional years of increasing slapstick plots, stories that were about "something", with only five or six good episodes to show for it.
Want proof? Check out Curb Your Enthusiasm. One episode of that show screams Seinfeld in a way that seasons 8 and 9 didn't.
Hey – good blog, simply trying around some blogs, seems a reasonably nice platform You Are using. I’m currently using Drupal for just a few of my sites but trying to change one in every of them over to a platform very much the same to yours as a trial run. Anything particularly you’ll advocate about it?
Hi there, just became alert to your blog through Google, and found that it's truly informative
Hey there, You've done an incredible job
