Remember a long time ago when Grey's Anatomy was just a simple show about young doctors in love/lust and hot people doing surgery and getting it on in various places in the hospital? When the hell did it turn into this mess? I mean I know that there's "something" going on with Izzie, and lord knows I've been known to talk to myself on various occasions, which does garner looks from people. But an entire relationship with her dead and imaginary fiance? In which she has lots and lots of sex, in the on-call room and at home, to the point where she can't even do her job? What the freakin' hell? Don't get me wrong, I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but when he was sitting next to her on the couch in the middle of the hospital during a meeting I actually started yelling at the TV. Do the other interns just leave a space for Izzie's imaginary friend? Or just leave a wide berth around her because she's a nutjob. I mean, she's so lucky that she even has this job after the whole LVAD debacle, she should really be more focused on her career and earning solo surgeries and not on having mind-blowing solo sex.
And don't even get me started on how this show made it so I kind of can't even like Mary McDonnell on it, by making her so annoying and obvious, and I love Mary McDonnell... she's far too good for this mess. Not to mention that I'm still not over the fact that they cast Melissa George on this show. Sigh. Grey's used to be such a nice little relaxing way to end the week. Solid show, decent writing, good-looking people. But like, I don't even care what is going on with Izzie, if she's sick, crazy, whatever. I just can't deal. And could they PLEASE, hook Alex up with someone who isn't off their rocker? I can't handle him ignoring people who are concerned about his significant other's well being, and him being all defensive and saying he knows what's best for them and then confessing his love for them... because clearly, as proven by last night and the whole Eva/Jane Doe/Rebecca thing, he doesn't.
Anyway, I wasn't even going to write about this strange and twisted episode because I feel like I'm just over this show (especially Izzie), but it's like 18 hours later and I'm still angry, so I figure others must be too. Or maybe I just take my TV too seriously. Thoughts?

This is why I'm glad I broke up with this show before the end of season 3. I loved it at first, but have not watched a bit of it since roughly when George and Izzie hooked up. The characters (except Izzie) are engaging, but the plots got way too stupid.
Two words: Kevin McKidd. That's why I'm still watching.
Dude, you aren't wrong. Word to the Kevin McKidd comment, 'cause other that there isn't much left. Last season was not awesome, but the nosedive it's taken recently actually makes me long for the George/Izzie days, which i never ever thought I'd say. I mean, can there be ONE plot that focuses on a non-romatic relationship?
I really feel like they are starting to jump the shark... interns operating on themselves and no one gets fired? Seriously? I also can't believe that Melissa George is on the show- I hated her on Alias and I hate her more now... ugh! I don't know if I can watch much longer!
I haven't bothered since season 2. It's just purely ridiculous at this point. But when I heard Denny was back IN GHOST FORM I had to start reading the recaps again because - wtf.
HELL yes on Kevin McKidd. Homina, homina. Also, I find it helpful to fast forward through the Izzie crap. Really, I just want this show to be about Christina and Bailey. And Mark. (I'm withholding judgment on the Little Grey biz.)
I 3rd or 4th to the Kevin McKidd comments!! He's a good hook to stay with the show (at least in theory).
If they could remove the interns, Sadie, izzie, George & Meredith I think I would like the show better. lol
Season 3 was awful, last year got slightly better and this year I fast forward every time Izzie is on the screen. They've always made George so pathetic that he is unbearable to watch. (Iz + Geoge? Ew.) I hated Melissa George on Alias, but only because she was evil. I'm interested in what she'll bring to the show. I'm glad they've eased up on Meredith's crazy.
I automatically fast forward whenever Denny appears onscreen. It's the only way I can watch GA without vomiting now. I only really pay close attention whenever Sandra Oh and/or Kevin McKidd are on screen.
I'm sick of the false hope of Denny dissapearing.
It's like..ok the heart guy ep is over, denny's gone...nope.
She burned the sweater...so now hes gone, right?
She slept with him and now shes so sad and alone again..wrong!
She chose Alex over Denny so NOW he'll go back to heaven or whatever form of purgatory Mere was in....wrong again.
Episode after episode he keeps coming back. I thought maybe when Izzie came to scrub in on the surgery he would be gone, but apparently not. I'm going to stop guessing when he'll leave and just assume he'll be around for the remainder of the season, hell why not the series??? Ghost sex isn't bad for ratings or anything...nooo not at alll....
It's the worst plotline of any show. EVER.
I 5th the comment on Kevin McKidd. I was actually irritated when I saw that he joined the cast, because that meant I had to sit through everyone else to see him. Just like I did with the Kyle Chandler two-parter a couple years back. Like others have said, I fast forward through the ridiculousness.
I stopped watching after Burke left and only returned this season for McKidd. Most of the cast is wasted with this horrid writing. Ugh.
I dislike it less when I think of Denny as a schizophrenic hallucination rather than as a ghost. It's not a terrible idea to wander into *genuine* mental illness with one of the main characters. (Though pairing another insane girl with Alex?) And if Grey's is going to make one of their main characters genuinely crazy, they're going to do it Grey's-style: it'll involve a lot of sex. It almost makes me wonder why we didn't predict something like this.
So you stay away from TWoP for a few hours, and by the time you get back your Kevin McKidd response is not really that original anymore.
I got to the point when I don't even watch the episode. I have it playing in the background, and whenever something sounds interesting, I kind of look at it, whenever Hunt comes on I rewind a little bit to see the entire scene, and whenever that ghost who must not be named comes on, I get dangerously close into damaging my bones as I sprint toward my DVR to fastforward.
It's so sad, really, because they have (mostly) a great cast, and among the stupidity that harnesses the storylines these days, there are a few decent ones too, and quite a few backstories I'd like to see developed.
What do I get instead? The eeek. And you know what, Shonda: I know you promised that there's a reason for that and that at some point we'll understand what's going on with Izzie, but what you didn't tell me what was my reason to actually sit through this and wait for yours.
My primary theory on all this (and on why no one has been more forthcoming about where it's going) is that it's the writer's revenge for the Emmy comment.
1) La Heigl has, in fact, been acting the hell out of this ridiculous plotline. She's Emmy-baiting it hard.
2) The writers have talked her into going along with it by using the magic "Emmy" word.
3) Then BAM! They're going to give her a brain tumor, kill her off, and send her on her merry way to movie (not-so) stardom. Without an Emmy.
I agree that the show is getting too much to bear. I'm not sure who's more delusional now: Izzie for her imaginary boyfriend or me for watching the show every week thinking it'll be good.
Shae: I concur. Shonda had best pull out something wonderful (Izzie's welcomed death please) to make up for the hour spent each week watching doctors do stupid things.
OK - I guess I'm not in the minority when I say that if the show was just the pretty boys (McDreamy, McSteamy, McKidd) and Bailey (with the occasional Christina thrown in) - the world would be a happier place.
If they would even just get rid of Bucktooth Sadie, I'd be better.
Here's hoping they use this aneurism/brain tumor to resolve the Izzy thing once & for all - either kill her off or let her become a decent character again - don't care which, just get rid of the ridiculous thing she has become.
I don't really understand why everyone hates Izzie so much, or why everyone hated the Izzie/George storyline - but if there isn't a brain tumor at the end of this Denny thing, even I will be dissapointed. They don't have to kill her, just give a solidly non-ghost answer to the storyline. But I do like me some Jeffrey Dean Morgan...
I gave up on Grey's after the Meredith drowning fake-out, but now I have started to read the recaps because I have to know about the latest crazy twists in this insane plotline.
Compared to this mess, Kate Walsh is probably thanking her lucky stars she's on Private Practice- who would have thought that would ever happen?
Add me to the "Kevin McKidd is the reason I still bother to watch the show" list. I get that the writers are angry at Heigl for refusing to submit her work for Emmy contention, but this ridiculous storyline has killed the show. Have mercy on the viewers, please!
I love Christina and Bailey, like Kevin McKidd -- but I was screaming at the TV last night over both the horrible Izzie story line and the Mary McDonnell doctor. I understand she doesn't have the social skills but someone could have cut her off (looking at you Mere) a heck of a lot sooner than that. And like someone upthread I keep waiting for Denny to disappear (I thought it would be Alex telling Izzie he loves her and understand that she's scared but he's not going to die...) but NO!! I was thinking "jumped the shark" through the whole episode.

I'm really beginning to HATE Denny because he waited to show up until Izzie was ready to move on. It seems like he just wants to control her and not let her be happy with another man.
I could have put up with the Denny shit, but now they have paired up Sloane and Lexie (teach me, teach me, teach me, teach me, ick) and it looks like they're pairing up Callie and Sadie. More ick.
Melissa George is a show killer. When she appears, the show is basically OVER.
At least it jumped the shark in spectacular fashion, instead of just fading away, like ER.
Maybe it will turn out that Izzie's already dead, ala "Sixth Sense"....

I agree that it's easier to think of this as a hallucination than a ghost, but it still sucks. If they want to make Izzie go crazy and then kill her off, fine, but this plot line is an insult to the viewers.

you know what annoys me the most? how shonda rhimes thinks this whole thing with izzie and denny is great, and it's so "touching" to see their chemistry again, etc, etc. she said the same thing about izzie and george, that it was going to be grey's newest great relationship, then everyone hated it and she backtracked, saying she never said this was going to grey's next great love story. this woman seems so out of touch with what the fans want, it's incredible.
You are so right, Pam. Her instincts are so bad. First, Izzie and George. Then starting the Erica/Callie thing and not knowing what to do with it. Then Lexie/George. Then Izzie/dead guy. Then Lexie/Mark. Then, it looks like, Sadie/Callie. (Sadie with anybody is a big mistake.) She has no sense of what the viewers want to see, or which characters should or could get together.
And what happened to Derek? He's hardly ever on the show, and he and Meredith have turned into Ward and June Cleaver since they moved in together. Do they even kiss? The most romantic thing his done is give her a used internal organ? WTF? This is the romance of the ages?
And another thing, why did she bring up the turmoil in Bailey's marriage and then just drop it? I know for a fact that it was B's husband that left the door open to the office, because he called her from the office to bitch at her about something before the baby was hurt. So why didn't that ever come out?
Maybe now that he has been killed off on Prison Break, that story line can pick up again. He was "Agent Blocks out the Sun" lol.

I have come to grips with my GA addiction. I have said that I was going to quit and then I didn't. Why? I think there is some quality stuff going on with the characters. It's hard to pinpoint, but it's definitely there. I stopped watching Dexter, Weeds, Californication and The Riches because I hhhhhated their plotlines. So I'm capable of it. Maybe it's the allure of Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson, and, strangely enough, Ellen Pompeo.
But think about this: We all know that McDonnell can act. So what does it say that her Dr. Dixon character has been so wooden? On who does that reflect? Because I actually enjoyed 27 Dresses.
The whole Izzie as necrophiliac is awful. The writers have lost it.
I stopped watching Grey's halfway through season 4. Best decision I ever made-- there are plenty of better Guilty Pleasure shows out there.
I don't care for Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and I hated Denny. I didn't think it was possible, but I hate his character EVEN MORE NOW. Seriously, Shonda, get over your love for Denny/JDM! Having him come back once a season is fine, but this is too much. And yeah, I kind of think this payback for Katherine...
I also don't care for Mark and Lexie as a couple. I just don't see it. And give the chief some balls already! Between Izzie and the LVAD, Burke/Christina and the tremor, and now the interns...what kind of hospital is this?

I think this show rebounded last year, actually, and was off to a good start this season. But once JDM came back, and the whole Hahn debacle, it's just been going downhill...
Just a clever way to give the hot lead sex scenes without making her look uncomfortable? Ugh. What I want to know is if this means Virtual Denny is the final Cylon. A Galactica crossover finale! Yay!
i agree with sooo many of the comments up there.
1) "teach me, teach me, teach me." no matter how hot the chick is, that is still creepy and a turn-off! Lexie and Mark? YUCK? i want Mark and Callie together. NOW.
2) give me more substantial scenes with Mere and Derek being happy together! i'm starting to doubt Shonda so much that when Derek was talking to Mere about losing the 16 year-old patient, i was so worried that they'd get into a fight that will result in a break-up.
3) and what the fuck? kick Hahn off the show because you have no idea where to go with the lesbian r/s storyline then BRING IN ANOTHER ONE? C'MON!!!!

i didn't care for McKidd when he first joined but i'm starting to take to him. orange beard and all. so yeah, leave him alone in his awesomeness. don't screw one of the few remaining good things about the show!

I am SO with you on everything you said Angel. I have begun "sookieing" any scenes with Izzie-its ridiculous-no matter what is wrong with Izzie the storyline never should have been written just b/c Shonda has a crush on JDM. I am also DISGUSTED by the fact the ABC suits replaced a great actress like Brooke Smith with the truly dreadful Melissa George, b/c they obviously wanted a "prettier" lesbian for Callie to make out with-ugh. And poor Mary McDonnell, the garb they make her wear when in surgery scenes-what the FRAK is that?!?!? She looks like she is wearing a cocoon suit. And what was with Christina's hair? I was beauty pageant huge.
The only bright spot is McKidd, whom I have adored for years-you see that look he gave Callie when the sisters were fighting in the ER?!? awesome. On her best day Melissa George has a tenth of that talent. Get rid of the dead weight: TR Knight, Katherine Heigl, Melissa George and 1/2 the interns and focus back on the patients, the relationships and for god's sake give the amazing Chandra Wilson some GOOD dialogue!!

Why was Derek whining about "they don't tell you that you'll lose most of your patients." Hey, I know that about neurosurgeons, and I'm not even in the medical field. By the time someone is operating on your brain, you're usually toast.
I just got around to reading the comments and I agree with pretty much all of them. I actually like Katherine Heigl in the movies she's been in, so I know that Izzie is not a reflection of KH's talent. It is a reflection of a writing staff that has no good ideas. If the Izzie/Denny thing is a plot device to show us Izzie is dying, crazy, or both, then it has gone on FAR too long. One episode of flashbacks because of the guy that didn't get the heart Denny got, I can maybe see, but that was like weeks ago in show time, so go away already Dead Denny.
