What Were They Thinking?: The Jay Leno Edition

So come this fall I have absolutely no reason to watch NBC at 10 PM. This comes on the heels of me having less and less reason to watch NBC in general (thanks to disappointing dreck like Knight Rider, Crusoe and Kath & Kim... don't even get me started on my love/hate of Heroes). Come this fall Jay Leno will be back and more primetimey than ever. In a bid to keep the current Tonight Show host on their network, once Conan heads west and takes over the long-running talkfest, NBC decided to give Leno and his chin a spot on their primetime lineup. Five. Nights. A. Week.

I had to read the ticker on my news show this morning twice because I thought I read it wrong. I know the man somehow inexplicably gets good ratings night after night. And that there are a lot of people out there who really like his sense of humor. I'm not really in that group of people. I did see him on stage once in Vegas (don't ask... this is the perfect of example of why what happens in Vegas should stay there) and he was more amusing, and WAY dirtier. Not Bob Saget dirty, but slightly smuttier. I guess that tells you pretty much all you need to know about my sense of humor.

I get that by doing this NBC keeps him from going to another network (like ABC) and starting a new show and going head-to-head against the Conan helmed Tonight Show. But it's the five nights a week at 10 PM thing that really gets me. How about just a Sunday night show? A week in review. One nice little Jay walking segment? That'd be about perfect for me. Especially since I've got way too much other stuff to watch on Sunday and could pretty much ignore this show's existence. Five nights? Where the hell are they going to put Law & Order: SVU? One has to think that it's a little too much for a 9 PM timeslot. Or any future grittier fare that they might have. They can't cram it all on to Sunday night. That's when they've got football. I guess since they've got so few solid performing shows, they'll just find a way to squeeze it in somehow. If Chuck somehow gets canceled because of this, I'm going to be hella pissed off.

But who is going to watch this at 10 PM every night? I would hazard to guess (judging by the few people that I know who regularly watch Leno and their other viewing habits) that this demographic is busy at 10 PM, watching procedurals like CSI: Miami or Without a Trace and shows of that ilk and won't want to switch over to see Jay Leno hamming it up about nothing in particular every night of the week. Maybe I'm wrong about this. Personally, for me 10 PM has become a time in our society where I'm used to heavier fare, like gritty dramas, FX shows and the news. I've become accustomed to watching this heavier fare or some really ridiculous reality TV at this time. Watching him yuk it up at 10 is just too early. Plus, I really wouldn't want to be the person who is stuck booking guests for Leno and Conan, since they will want to have the same people on and they will both (presumably) be filming on the West Coast. Yeah. That's gonna be good times.

What do you think? Are you a Leno junkie? Are you excited that he's got a new show? Or do you think this is a ridiculous idea?

Well at least I don't need to worry about anything on NBC at 10 conflicting with a show I want to watch on another network.

NBC is desperate. This allows them to CHEAPLY lose the 10-11 pm time slot every night (instead of losing it with EXPENSIVE dramas like they're currently doing) and keeps Leno from jumping ship. How long advertisers will keep paying for time on the show is a bit of a problem, though...

Eric, Excellent point.

Poor Conan, they give him the Tonight Show and then pull the rug out and basically make the time slot pointless by giving Leno a 10pm time slot to continue his horrid humor. UGH.

Did no one learn anything from 5 nights a week of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It took ABC years to bounce back from that one.

This is making NBC that much closer to FOX in my mind. So now they're only programming 10 hours in prime time during the week? I think it's a horrible mistake. What happens if the ratings are spectacularly low? Will they cancel the show & scramble to fill 5 hours of network time? It seems like they're just giving up. And where will Leno be taping this show? The only good thing that could come of this is if Conan stays in NYC where he belongs & does the Tonight Show from here.

It almost feels like they're just moving Leno along to milk his aging demographic. The people like his shtick are going to bed earlier now. 10 years from now he'll probably have the 7PM hour

I completely agree. If this somehow screws Chuck, I will personally fly to NYC and kick asses and NBC. I think the universe is conspiring to make me abandon prime time television completely. And, considering their network is the only one I really watch anymore, this is not a smart move on their part.

Perhaps NBC can make money by charging the companies behind the film/TV/music being plugged by the guests.

I think this move is ridiculous. I don't think his show belongs at 10:00 five nights a week. Why doesn't NBC fire Jeff Zucker already. Their primetime problems began when he became in charge.

Honestly, I don't know what to say about this. So they're really just giving up those 5 hours of prgramming? I suppose this would mean less new shows, which could mean less cancelled shows.

I can't believe that the affiliates are going to stand for this. This will be a terrible lead-in to local news. I expect some serious backtracking on this. Angel is right, one night a week would be plenty. I think Friday would be a good spot.

The only show NBC has worth watching is Chuck. Unless it somehow screws that, I really don't care.

This decision is so shocking and crazy. How can it NOT fail, eventually? I mean, honestly! Is Leno really worth it? To me, he sucks. I cannot stand his homophobic and anti-obesity "jokes" night after night after night. I refuse to watch him. How ya like THAT, NBC??

I completely agree with everyone here. I do feel sorry for Conan - the point was for him to have the Tonight Show. 5 nights of anyone trying to entertain is ridiculus - has NBC now jumped the shark for it's prime time programming? MORE CHUCK!
