This UK import is more outrageous than Gossip Girl and more dramatic than Degrassi, and has way more nudity and foul language than anything you are likely to see on any form of basic cable in the United States. Kids, don't watch this one with your parents. Parents, hide this DVD from your teens and then find a nice convent to send them to, because if their lives are anything like this show, you are in for a whole world of hurt. This deliciously sinful show airs on BBC America, but the first season has just arrived stateside, so you can watch it over and over again. If any series deserved the "OMFG" tagline, it is this one.
Seriously, it goes there and then some. There's a ton of underage sex (among other things). In fact, the first episode alone deals with an attempt to get the lone virgin boy laid, a trip to a whore house, a naked neighbor and an out of control party where one guy has sex with a stranger in order to borrow a car. Convenient! And that's just where it starts. There's so much mayhem as the season progresses that I'd need ten blog posts to detail it all.
It's kind of like Gossip Girl in some ways, since it deals with some of the same issues, but there's no fancy wardrobe budget here, or a hoity-toity prep school. They go to public school and seem to lose their clothes more than wear them. The flighty Cassie even looks a bit like GG's Jenny, but the waifish look and blonde hair is about where the similarities end. She's a twisted anorexic girl with an addiction to pills and anything that doesn't make her hungry. Hands down, she's my favorite character on the show. She says and does anything that's on her mind. And she's sort of unintentionally funny. I adore her. Plus, she's way smart when it comes to getting around authority and she's got this breathy way of speaking that's oddly fabulous.
If you haven't been watching, you really need to be. And the DVD is the perfect way to catch up, because if you watch one episode, you are going to be hooked and want to watch more of this insanity. Plus, there are bonus scenes (which they call ancillary, because it is all British and classy like that) and also video diaries, which aren't annoying and done by the actors, instead they are done in character and way more entertaining than I would have expected.
So go get it now. Did I mention there's tons of nudity? And a character who is awesomely named Mad Twatter? See, you just need to see this show.
Have you been watching? Are you hooked? Discuss.
