I'm sure everybody's split on this, and understandably so, but I'm firmly in the camp that believes last night's Heroes was a very solid episode, and a good indication that the show may be back on track. Lots of action, no time traveling, a clear narrative, the bad guys and good guys were, at least ostensibly (though wherever HRG is aligned is always difficult to define that way), easily identifiable, no sign of Maya, and Zeljko Ivanek is really scary so far. And I actually like Sylar, especially when he's off doing his own thing, so I'm even on board with that part.
The opening sequence with Tracy being captured as Nathan's TV interview plays in the background was well-done, action-wise, and it set up the principle conflict of the new volume perfectly without wasting any damn time like this show usually loves to do. Nathan's clearly(?) the bad guy here, though I'm not sure how much ambiguity I'm going to tolerate as far as what his intentions with the heroes are. Does he want to weaponize them? Cure them? He probably doesn't want to kill them, but I suppose that's possible. He seems to be working for Angela, and she's a cold hard bitch. Either way, I want to know by next episode, or I'm going to be annoyed.
The only diversion I hated was Parkman's spirit turtle guy hallucinations and more white eyeball drawing, but that could just be because I've pretty much had it with both Parkman and Daphne as characters. Hiro's still annoying as all get-out, but, you know, such is Hiro. I am kind of loving Ando's new powers douchebaggery thing he's got going on, though -- you know most people would do the exact same thing in his situation. Oh, and I guess Peter forgot he could fly when he was on the plane? Or can he not fly anymore? I can't remember, because this show is hard to fricking follow, but I do think that needs to be cleared up ASAP as well.
In terms of the promo for next week: Yes, a plane crash in a weird place seems very similar to Lost, but is that an inherently bad thing, based on the little information we have right now? Lost is a great show. And either way, it looks like the good guys are coming together as one to fight the bad guys as one, which is what Season 2 should have been, so while that's overdue and taking place after a plane crash, I'm going to accept it happily now. Until things get inevitably screwed up in classic Heroes fashion. (No! Think positive! It's going to be great!)
So yeah, for the first Tuesday morning in a long time I can say I liked last night's episode. I was entertained, I understood everything, I didn't scream at the TV very much, and it didn't seem like drunk people wrote it. Very rare qualities for a Heroes episode. The question I keep asking myself is, if it wasn't my job to, would I still continue watching? Well, the answer to that is that I'd have probably stopped watching in the middle of Season 2, but let's say I made it through all that and got to where we are now. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, I would still be watching, and god, am I ever relieved to finally say that. Welcome back, Heroes. Don't mess it up.

I enjoyed it.
But... But! Peter should be able to fly! And why can we see Peter's abilty now?
And I'm kind of gutted that Nathan is now a bad guy. The good guys need someone with half a brain and Mohinder isn't gonna cut it.
I think he can only hold one power at a time now.
I too was yelling "you can fly, moron!" at Peter. Flight is the one power he should definitely have had at the start of this ep since he copied it from Nathan at the end of the last volume to save them both.
I did think it was the best ep we've gotten in awhile.
I wonder if injecting himself with the formula changed Peter's power. I don't think he had to touch people before to gain their ability, but on the plane he had to touch Mohinder. I am willing to forgive, this once, the forgetting to fly as he was probably panicked at the moment.
Heroes is the Madonna of television - a whisper of talent and a boatload of flash and marketing. Bring back Christopher Ecclestein (invisible man) and infuse fun back into this show. And can we have Hiro man up and become the future baddass he was way back in season 1 already. So over him.
Since Heroes started, I was always hoping that the good guys would ban together and fight crime. After two seasons, I gave up that hope. Last night's show and the teaser for what's to come renewed my interest in this show and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.
I'm not one to over-analyze anything and I take each episode as they come. I've always just trusted the people behind the show to know what they're doing and I haven't let a few boring or disappointing episodes turn me against the show for good. I am so glad that I've stuck around because I think things are only going to get better.
Peter can only use one ability at a time now and does not retain them. It is that simple, he couldn't fly at the end of the episode.
Gotta admit I screamed at the TV a bit with the whole flying thing - especially since a few mins before Nathan asked him what powers he has and Peter said he could fly . . . great show other than the hanging out of a plane part.
I really loved last night's episode, AND it made me love Sylar a million times more than I ever did...particularly because he was the ONLY one who didn't wuss out when Nathan's henchmen came after him, and showed how badass he really was.
As for the plane part...did anyone SEE the original Final Destination? AND make the Ali Larter connection??? Clear Rivers?!?!?! I can't be the only one, because I'm thinking and hoping it was a minor shout out to that movie.
A good start in the right direction. I did have a "duh" moment with Peter and the whole plane part. Im sure we were all in unison screaming for him to fly.
I liked last night's episode, Heroes is making a recovery. Maybe they can bring the kids (Micah, Molly, and Monica) back from wherever they hid the first half of the season to be on the run with the rest of the good guys. And Peter has stopped being annoying, which is always good.
There was no "Duh" moment. When Peter touched Suresh he got the SuperStrength power and precedded to kick the crap out of the gaurds. Then he accidently touched the ice queen and when he punched the next gaurd he hurt his wrist (IE) he lost the superstrenght power. But... now he's IceMan, unless he can make an Ice slide, falling out of the plane will kill him (unless he quickly touches Claire before falling out).
"Peter can only use one ability at a time now and does not retain them. It is that simple, he couldn't fly at the end of the episode."
yeah, I don't understand why there's any confusion on this
I think there is confusion as he's never had he's power manifest itself like that before. Even Arthur's power wasn't like that. It's just another random new thing that's changed for no reason.
I'm already slightly annoyed by it.
That's true Chris. But the fact is the writer's saw an opportunity and took it. When Peter injected himself with the formula we had no idea if he would get his own power back or a new one. So he's gotten a new one and is no longer a completely ridiculous gamebreaking character. I, for one, approve of the change. I was getting tired of the show using Peter as some kind of multi-purpose Deus Ex Machina to solve all the problems.
Anyway, people should've realized that Peter can only hold one power at a time after he lost Mohinder's super strength when he absorbed Tracy's Cryokinesis. So when he took Mohinder's strength he presumably lost Nathan's Flight. Peter also gave us a clue to his new condition when he talked to Nathan (the first time) "What was THE LAST THING you saw me do?"
Yeah, you know? I liked it as well! If for not other reason than the rest of the show didn't mess up my enjoyment of the really cool stuff. For example, this week's really cool stuff would be Sylar's "you know he wasn't going down that easy" assault team annihilation.
A friend of mine a long time ago stated, while holding up a corn chip, "The chip: simply a vessel for the salsa." As long as your chips aren't all broken into tiny pieces, or really old and stale, they really shouldn't make much difference with the enjoyment of the experience. We then proceeded to eat about a gallon of really good homemade salsa that day.
The thing is, he stuck me with a metaphor that I can't get out of my thought process, no matter how hard I try.
In the case of Heroes, the plot is the chip, and superpowers, hot people, and cool special effects is the salsa.
Let's hope that the new bag of chips isn't as crappy as the last two, because I still really like the salsa.
