TWoP 10: Least Deserving Reality Show Winners

While we're still reeling from the surprising and unfathomable shocker of Hosea winning the Top Chef prize this week, we decided to look back at some other reality show contestants who didn't deserve their titles either. There have been quite a few, and heck, we could have probably made most of this list with just Survivor players (Amber and Tina, we're looking in your general direction). And that's not even counting people whom we just didn't like, even though they earned their wins, like Hung, Fantasia, Mike Boogie, Flo and Zach (OK, mostly just Flo). So if we we're in the business of revoking titles, these are the ones that we'd like to take back.

1. Jenna Morasca (Survivor: Amazon)
Ostensibly Survivor is about trying to outwit and outplay your fellow contestants, which runner-up Matt did. However, in a season that was a battle of the sexes, sexy was what won, or at least being naked was what won. She was sick all the time, complained constantly, considered leaving and her most memorable power play was bartering with Jeff Probst to get peanut butter in exchange for her (and her gal pal Heidi) stripping down to the buff. She only made it as far as she did because her ailing state made her less of a threat than Heidi. We hate winners who do so little, yet get so much (Vecepia, consider yourself lucky that we only put one do-nothing Survivor on our list).

2. Maggie (Brother Brother 6)
When will Big Brother contestants finally realize that people should be rewarded for playing people so skillfully and artfully pulling puppet strings? Bitter people voting and manipulating house guests is the only way we can remotely explain how Maggie (or Jun, who ridiculously beat Alison) won this show. Janelle went against the odds, lasted a tremendously long time without a single ally and was infinitely smarter than Maggie and runner-up Ivette. And if we could take away a runner-up prize too, it would be Ivette, who trusted her alliance and kept Maggie with her, instead of having the guts to go up against Janelle. Ivette still wouldn't have won, but at least then we would have respected her.

3. Kelly Monaco (Dancing With the Stars)
It was Season 1 and the competition wasn't exactly up to the level that it is now, but even so, Kelly Monaco was not the strongest contestant on her season. The only reason she took home the prize was because she had a bigger fan base than John O'Hurley, who at that point was just known as "J. Peterman from Seinfeld" and there's not a hell of a lot of overlap between the DWTS voters and the Seinfeld fanbase. If they had given a mirrorball for most improved Monaco would have taken that one, but she never really stepped it up the way that O'Hurley did.

4. Taylor Hicks (American Idol)
Can we get a recount on this one? Seriously, there had to have been some tampering with the phone voting, because it is two seasons later and we're still shaking our heads at how this boring silver-haired Michael McDonald wannabe beat out Kat McPhee. Because where were the fans when it came to buying albums? No where. Taylor got dropped from his label in little over a year after winning. Even Ruben (the other least deserving Idol) had us snowed with that whole Velvet Teddy Bear thing while he was on the show. Taylor's win is especially suspect in a season that included Chris Daughtry, Kellie Pickler and Elliot Yamin, all of whom have had some pretty decent sales in their post-Idol careers.

5. Ilan Hall (Top Chef)
Hosea wasn't the first Top Chef winner to get us all steamed up. Ilan Hall had that honor when he took home the title in season 2, beating out fan favorite Sam Talbot and the annoying-but-talented Marcel Vigneron for the prize. Throughout the season Ilan produced some solid meals, but Marcel definitely had him beat in the originality department. And in the finals, the judges rated both of them well. Plus, Ilan was partially responsible for the infamous Marcel head-shaving incident and didn't receive any real recourse, and tried to accuse Marcel of cheating. That kind of poor sportsmanship should have earned him some demerits.

6. Charla (Paradise Hotel)
Why this all-but-forgotten Fox show from the summer of 2003 is perhaps the greatest single season of any reality series ever is an argument for another day. But as some of you may recall, the program pitted schlumpy Dave against a resort filled with mean, drunk, hard-bodied a-holes. In classic nerd vs. Goliath fashion, Dave ingeniously wheeled, dealed and manipulated himself all the way to the finals, where high school reared its ugly head and all of the bitter ex-houseguests that he'd gotten kicked off voted for his ungrateful sidekick Charla and his ally Keith to receive the big cash prize instead of him. Keith, we liked. But we'll never forgive Charla for refusing to share her spoils with the guy who made it possible.

7. Saleisha Stowers (America's Next Top Model)
This ordinary girl, with a killer runway walk, seemed to impress the judges, but she ended up in the bottom two as much as she did the top two. Yet somehow she pulled out a win. We're skeptical that it was just because Chantal tripped some poor stilt-walker on the runway. It might have more to do with the fact that Saleisha knew Tyra before the show. She went to T-Zone camp and appeared walking the runway on Tyra's talk show. Suspicious. Also, she sort of bent the rules a bit about not having a national modeling campaign for five years prior... in our mind, a commercial should count. Very suspect. We're not impressed.

8. Stefani Schaeffer (The Apprentice)
Did anyone even watch the L.A. season besides us? It was infuriating on all kinds of levels (living in tents... really?). Anyway, we were most disappointed that at the end of this insane season, Trump decided to hire Stefani who had just kind of stood to the side and never really stepped up to the plate to take responsibility for ideas (good or bad). She was never even a project manager (which wasn't entirely her fault due to the twists of the game), but yet she gets to oversee a project for a mega-organization? Stupid. Runner-up James at least showed some leadership abilities along the way. Bad move, Trump. Much smarter to move along to celebrities who you don't actually have to put on the payroll.

9. Freddy and Kendra (Amazing Race)
While we are all for conning and scheming to win on Big Brother and Survivor, that sort of behavior doesn't really fit with the Amazing Race vibe. Yet Freddy and Kendra (who had made some upsetting and ignorant comments about the nations they had visited -- "these people just keep breeding" was probably her most charming) tried to lie their way on to an earlier flight by claiming they had a sick child in Hawaii. They also tried to get a cop to give them an emergency escort to the finish line. While runners-up Kris and Jon lost out in a foot-race, they were the real winners in our mind.

10. Ambre (Rock of Love 2)
Was this just supposed to make for a good twist somehow? The manipulative girl, who was two-faced to all her fellow contestants (although that's not necessarily a bad thing) acted immature. Which is strange, since she lied about her age, telling everyone she was in her early thirties when she was actually 37. Is that some kind of new math? At her age, she should know better. Not to mention that she never seemed to have chemistry with Bret. He was way more into Daisy the stripper. They were both fake bitches, but at least Daisy was upfront about it.

Who else doesn't deserve their reality-show crown? Sound off below.

Great list! I would also add the following undeserved winners:
Whitney from Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model

Mike Boogie from Big Brother All Stars season

Pretty much every winner from the past 6 seasons of the "Real World/Road Rules Challenge"

Great list; agree with all of them. I remember watching that TAR finale with Freddie/Kendra vs. Jon/Kris (it was my first season; ah, memories), and was HOWLING when those model twerps beat J&K in the foot race. It was like good vs. evil, and evil WON.

Ilan was the first undeserving bastard who came to mind, but that could be because I've tried to block Tootie (Saleisha from ANTM) from my memory. Ugh.

But Freddy and KKKendra definitely belong on this list not only for being terrible people, but also for beating out probably the best (extreme competence + lovability) TAR team ever: Kris and Jon.

Just for clarification, it was Elia from Top Chef 2 who accused Marcel of cheating. Ilan supported her. I think this season's Top Chef far outstrips TC2 in terms of the prize going to the wrong person because Ilan had actually done well throughout that season and won more than one challenge. Hosea cannot make that claim, and the judging here was far more suspect to give him the win.

And why isn't Jaslene or the reviled Naima from ANTM on this list too? I think Naima and Saleisha could duke it out over worst ANTM ever.

I was just going to mention Naima as one of the worst ANTM winners. Jaslene may not be everyone's cup of tea, but she works constantly. But no one can top Saleisha and Whitney as worst winners, ever.

So glad you brought up Ilan--I am still smarting over that one. But according to Tom Colicchio they judge on the meal in front of them, not on past performance. Like it or not--how could Stefan win with frozen fish and ice slices and banana lollipops? How???
I am still heartbroken that my gal Carla floundered in the finale--thanks Casey Thompson!!!

100% agreement on the loathesome Charla, Kelly Monaco (she wasn't terrible per se but J. Peterman was outstanding), and Taylor Hicks. But I can't support Freddy & Kendra being on this list because no one who has ever won TAR has truly been undeserving--if you wanted to have a list of "winners who made us physically ill", that's a different argument. Hell, even Andrew & Dan would have been worthy if they'd somehow run a superb final leg on TAR13 (though that was not bloody likely). And as much as Kris & Jon were the best overall team on TAR6, they screwed up in Honolulu and cost themselves the race. That's the truth.

Dick Donato lasted as long as he did on Big Brother because the producers pulled all the strings to get him there. He was a disgusting creature that they liked anyway. The show's never recovered its audience from it's pre-BS days.

Agree 100% with Ilan -- that smug douchebag one-hit (all I can make is paella) wonder should never have won.

Also agree on Sebelia -- Uli was the star that season. Michael also floundered, but Uli was robbed.

Freddy and Kendra -- meh.

I also think Mike Boogie DOES belong on the list, as someone already mentioned he rode Dr. Will all the way.

And Tina from Survivor? Pretty undeserving, but as I didn't watch the Jenna season (too painful) I can't compare. Of the ones I did watch, Tina was a total red herring.

1. Jenna just proves that men are stupid about sex. She and Heidi may have used their bodies, but the guys weren't exactly begging them not to. And it kept them around longer than they would have otherwise. Tina from Survivor kind of deserved it; Cody was an idiot for taking her with him. Way to hand over a million dollar, man. :) I have to go w/ Vecepia being the least deserving Survivor winner.

4. I still don't understand how Taylor Hicks ended up winning. That was a joke right? I chose to sit that season out and only watch the final and I so didn't get his shtick at all. He creeped me out.

5. Ilan was a smarmy git, but Hosea turns my stomach. Stefan or Carla should have won because they dominated the most; all Hosea did was cheat on his girlfriend and continually proof he is an idiot on TV. It shouldn't have only been about the best meal on that given night. And I do blame Casey for Carla being out, but more because I didn't like Casey all that much to begin with. Mediocre.

7. Saleisha does my head in. She's a pretty enough girl -- prettier before the makeover. No one ever looked at Tootie and said, "Hey, she should be a top model! Dior would totally book her for Spring!" Ugh. Worst win ever. Before Hosea.

The ridiculous thing about that Morasca/Heidi thing where they "took off their clothes for food" was that they didn't. Ilan should be at the top of the list. Talk about upset. BTW, it was his idea to accuse Marcel of cheating, Elia just said it first and then Ilan chickened out of saying it (even though it was his idea). He just repeated dishes over and over from the restaurant from where he worked. Ugh!!! That really should have gone to Marcel. Hands down.

As for Hosea, he really should have been eliminated several episodes before. True, Stefan and Carla messed it up, but Hosea shouldn't have even made it to the top six (and neither should have Leah).

Maggie is, far and away, the best I have ever seen on a reality show at playing people. It is not even close. I didn't like her at all but like doesn't have to do anything with it. What was comical was reading week after week when she pulled off another move was how it was someone else's fault and the failure to give credit to this woman. The woman was getting people to sacrifice themselves for her as if it was an honor. The woman was talking opposing players into voting off their teammates (that Howie conversation concering James). The woman seemed oblivious of the camera. She just worked it. She controlled that game even when she should have had no control. I listened to nonsense week after week of Kaysar's brilliance or James's ability to win immunity or Janelle's great game play while they were all played by Maggie. I didn't like the woman but it does not matter. I don't even think she was that smart (she let Ivette figure numbers). However, I would never purposefully delude myself into thinking she did not play everyone like a puppet. The 2nd best was that asshole on Survivor (the car salesman). I don't take credit away from people who outplay other people. I picked Maggie to win by the way after the 3rd week. It was easy. What wasn't easy was listening to the supposed genius of other players as Maggie had them dispatched and her not get the credit.

I don't think Jenna should be consider les deserving I mean she won more immunities than Matt. If you want to talk about least deserving it Tina. She only won because some of the jury members had something against Colby. And the same can be said for All-Star winner Amber. And as for Idol, I think Taylor deserved to win but it was unfortunate that his sales were not good. And as for Dancing, as far as I'm concerned, Emmitt, Helio, and Apolo shouldn't have won. As far s I'm concerned it was Chip and Kim who shouldn't have won Amazing Race; Colin and Christie should have won.

Ilan didn't deserve to win, but only because the title should have gone to Elia. If American Idol were a singing competition, I would agree with your assessment that Taylor Hicks is among the least deserving winners of the program. However, as your headline states, it is a reality show and Taylor played the game with great skill. He capitalized on his unconventional looks, played up his goofy moves, and had a knack (for the most part) for picking well-known and well-liked songs and giving them his own spin. He made himself unique, memorable, and entertaining. The producers' obvious preference for another contestant and Simon's outright distain gave Taylor the appearance of the "underdog" and his refusal to talk back gave his fans even more incentive to come to his defense by voting relentlessly. I think Taylor definitely deserved his win.

OK, Taylor Hicks didn't sell many albums, but he admitted he took the opportunity given to him and ran with it. He was a better stage performer than a music performer. Also, Daughtry fans, if you felt he should've won, then why didn't you vote for him? I was an Elliott fan, but I give Taylor credit when credit was due. Like him or not, he won, deal with it.

It all comes down to votes, people. Fantasia, Rubin, and Jordin won because more people voted for them.

1. Jenna was undeserving, but so was Matt. Rob C. ran the entire game. I think other bad winners were Vecepia, Amber, and Todd.

2. Maggie's best moves were duping Howie when he was HOH, and convincing Ivette to take her to the final two. Mike Boogie and Dick were far worse winners.

4. I agree with this. I liked Fantasia (funny person to imitate) and thought the others were fairly solid choices.

9. Whoever won the TAR All Stars, or any CBS All-Stars game, was an undeserving winner.

I'd add JD Fortune from Rock Star INXS as well.

Didn't a very revealing magazine spread of the former Playboy model Kelly Monaco appear at a fortuitous time during her stint on dancing with the stars? I think that did a lot to push her over the top.

Andrea Muizelaar, winner of Canada's Next Top Model Season One. Reinforced the commonly held belief that being anorexic and a flake are the primary requirements of being a model. Complained bitterly about her winnings being taxed and 'having to travel' to be a model. Fortunately she has disappeared into obscurity.

Adrianne Curry ANTM Season 1. Does this require an explanation?

The worst ever is a tie between Ilan and Mike Boogie -- both are not only undeserving but repulsive nasty people as well!

I hate some of these people as much as everyone else (believe me, I really, really do), but I don't get this. If they won in keeping with the rules* of the game, they "deserved" to win -- simple as that.

* Judgment is reserved in the case of Dick Donato. SOMETHING was not right there, but, at the same time -- and, by this, I don't meant to defend him as a person -- it was not his "fault" he won; it seems the producers allowed him to do so. (At least it wasn't his even-more-of-a-loser daughter though.)

I don't argue for the most part, but Parvati was a hell of a winner (funny, shifted alliances when needed, created multiple alliances in which she was central and pivotal, was not perceived as a real threat by the others, good at challenges and helped around camp...the only thing I didn't like was when she trash talked Eliza...)

You're so right.
Not only was he a disgusting, hateful, nasty "human being", he physically abused Jen when he poured liquid on her head, and he got no warning for that.

I think I stop watching after that...(and besides, all those people were horrible, except Kail and Jen, who were thus completely doomed...)

This list fails. Tina is undeserving?!? She absolutely manipulated in Survivor 2. She was the one who figured out whom to vote for at the merge so that Kucha could take control. She brainwashed everyone into thinking she was the most deserving. Hardcore survivor fans consider her to be one of the greatest winners.

Adam could not win. The deal was already concluded for him to be the first Average Joe for whom the women competed. BTW, during that later taping, he had a GF on the side living in his apartment building in NYC while he was picking the very lovely Samantha Trenk.

Maggie played BB brother very well, because she was exceptionally tight-lipped about her game play; she just wasn't entertaining. The best BB players out smart and manipulate their fellow Houseguests and knowingly play to their audience as well. That's why people love Dr. Will and that's why Dan will also be remembered as one of the best players of the game.

Paradise Hotel: Agree; one of the best reality shows ever! Charla was played as much as the others. Dave was gross and sleazy and pathetic, but he was the Puppetmaster!

DWTS: Word to a poster above that the biggest travesty was Helio beating Mel B. Mel, I believe, is the very best dancer to ever be on DWTS. She had the technique and the expression and killer routines. Helio would not deserve to be on ANY final of any season.

Tina didn't deserve to win, but Coby deserved to lose. What an idiot. He sealed his fate when he chose her. What was he thinking?

As for Kelly Monaco and John OHurley...WORD! Her fans should be delighted that they carried her all the way to the prize. She may have improved, but by no means was she the better dancer.

Mel B losing to Helio matches the insanity.

Very clearly Taylor Hicks is the worst person ever to win American Idol, and his poor album sales and general lack of interest in him shows it. The real winner of AI5 should have been Chris Daughtry, and HIS album sales show it. Daughtry fans voted for him, but were not like those crazy Soul Patrollers who would power vote for hours. I don't blame SPers for not buying his album. It really sucked.

Was Todd the Survivor winner who was the soft-core porn star? That was the season and the winner that really soured me on Survivor. I didn't watch the show for two seasons after that season. It seemed like that soft porn guy had some kind of hold over everybody. They just rolled over and let him run the game.

I liked Taylor.

But I agree totally with ANTM. Jaslyne winning was a joke but you could tell it was comming from the beginning.

Fantasia was a bigger joke but she was pimped all to hell and back. No one else stood a change and Simon hated Jennifer Hudson.

But the worst travesty was definately America's Smartest Model. For VJ to win over everyone else was a travesty of epic propotions.

How about most undeserving winner who didn't actually win but yet still took home first place prize money? Rupert was on two Survivor shows, didn't win either but yet still walked away with 1 million dollars due to that stupid call-in voting after the All-Stars season. Annoyed the crap out of me that he got the same amount of money as the WINNER did!

Saleisha was a joke.

Heather was RIPPED OFF! First, they used & exploited her Asperger's...and then when it turned out she was the BEST model of all of them, they decided they couldn't let her win. I mean, seriously...SOOOO many ANTM winners are the stars of their own commercials *cough*. The go see ep was strangely reminiscent of Toccara's ouster.

Toccara was doing an awesome job, even with the constant bitchy sniping from the dressers. Then, the ep before they are slated to head to Japan, suddenly Toccara tanks. What-EVER.

And by the way, I have to say that Toccara is one of the few ANTMers to actually work steadily after the show.

Fantasia owns this list. She sounded like a frog from start to finish and the only reason why I think she won is because people felt sorry for her "illiterate single mom on welfare" status. Latoya London and Jennifer Hudson were miles better than The Frog.

Gotta comment on the Colby/Tina comments. I always understood why Colby did what he did (though it was kinda dumb). In those days (at least), the runner-up on Survivor got $100,000. Colby hated Keith so much he'd never let Keith get his hands on that dough. And I think Colby figured that even if Tina won, Colby would get the runner-up money, and he had already won the car.

Actually, I remember the "average joe" was one of the biggest assholes when he met the chick in a fat suit. He said some really crude things and the good looking guy didn't say anything bad. Just cause he was the average guy, didn't make him the better one.

I think Vecepia was the least deserving Survivor winner. Kathy should have one that season if Vecepia hadn't distracted her and made her lose the last challenge. Also agree that Chloe shouldn't have won PR and that Daniel was much better. Totally agree with the Ilan choice. Sam was actually my favorite that season. I thought Ilan and Elia should have gotten kicked off too after they tried to shave Marcel's head. I was disappointed that Sam just sat around and did nothing during the whole incident. If not Sam, then I wanted Marcel to win out of the ones left.

Absolutely agree about Evil Dick being the worst reality show winner. He was a disgusting, horrible person and ought to have been kicked off the show (BB kicked houseguests off for a lot less before). He and his daughter both taught me the valueable lesson: that I don't know anywhere near enough profanities.

Jordin Sparks? Apparently Idol decided that after Taylor Hicks, no one over the age of 21 could be allowed to win. Melinda Doolittle was the absolute best vocalist that show has ever seen, but she didn't look like Britney or Beyonce, so goodbye. That was the las Idol episode I ever watched. I like TAR because when you win that game, it's deserved, even if you're loathesome.

Timbaland said in an interview that Sparks will be one of the collaborations on his forthcoming album Shock Value 2. However when the official press release was release, Sparks was not listed as one of the album's collaborators. In an update on her website, she stated that her fans can look forward to seeing more upbeat dance tunes on her second album. She confirmed that fans could see her at a possible NFL playoff anthem in January, Charity Benefit in February, and VH1 Save the Music performing with John Mayer in March. In addition to this an official Sparks fan club would open called "SparksTown", which has since been launched with the release of "Battlefield". Sparks returned to University of Phoenix Stadium to again sing the national anthem before the NFC Championship game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles on January 18, 2009.
