So last night's Heroes was the first one penned by Pushing Daisies' Bryan Fuller since Season 1, and while the episode was as strong as the occasionally strong episodes of this volume have been, the thing that really stood out for me was -- whoa, when did this show turn into a quip-a-second quipfest? It was like watching Buffy or something. The dialogue was so much different -- and so much better -- than it usually is, I almost had trouble focusing on the story. Was Season 1 like this? I can't remember, but for now I'm welcoming it as a very positive change. I bet the actors are thrilled to have non-stupid dialogue to say for the first time a long while. Also, Swoosie Kurtz was practically used as an extra, which is just unbelievable. Bryan Fuller is the man. My favorite quotes from last night, in no particular order:
"Rebel, rebel." -- HRG shout-out to David Bowie, obviously
"Let the rabbit run." -- HRG shout-out to the late John Updike. Or that Eminem song, but hopefully not.
"I don't want you to help her." -- Danko
"Then why did you bring me here?" -- Mohinder
"I figured it would be a whole lot easier than carrying you." -- Danko, then ZAAAAAP!
"I'm smarter than the average bear." -- Danko
"What are we saving the baby from? Lead-based toys?" -- Hiro
"I've seen this on Dr. Phil." -- Ando
"While you were playing Abu Ghraib, I was trying to make ice in an oven." -- Tracy
"Why do you need to question my son? He's never met his father, and he can't talk." -- Parkman's ex-wife, finally making herself useful
"You look like you've been mugged, and the first thing they stole was your dignity." -- Swoosie to Angela
"Good lord, Angela, what did you do? [Beat.] Is it pills?" -- Swoosie to Angela FTW
Bonus rounds:
"Why didn't you tell me [about seeing your mother]?" -- Ando
"I was afraid I would cry if I did." -- Hiro. What was that? An effectively poignant Heroes moment?! Clutch the pearls!
It wasn't really a quote, but Parkman brainwashing everyone at the hospital into believing Daphne was Gwen Stefani made me laugh pretty hard. So did Ando frozen in a wheelbarrow, though I seriously felt poor James Kyson Lee's pain.
Oh, and quick FYI to the ABC promo department -- Sylar is not "America's favorite psycho serial killer." Dexter is. That is all. [Update: Sorry, I of course meant "NBC Promo Department." I think you mean the NBC promo department. And word.
It's nice to see Hiro back in action, and to see the other heroes actually doing things instead of just whining and writing emo songs about how their powers are so second generation ipod, right?
It's also nice that Eyebrows the cheerleader was 100% absent from an episode, and Sylar's only contribution was an eyebrow twitch and a stuffed rabbit. I mean and Doyle.
Word too. Since they abused Sylar's character, he's come down from that. But yeah, I thought the episode was a gazillion times better than anything that came out of Villians.
I totally agree with all of this. I loved the episode and have hated most of this volume and last. What a great writer Fuller is. Please give him more episodes to write. It'll be so depressing if next week is as bad as the two before this one was.
Actually I disagree, Sylar is a much more compelling serial killer then Dexter. At least Sylar occassional changes the way he kills. I love Dexter too, but he's a one way to kill kind of guy. It get's a bit boring which makes me not too bothered about watching the scenes where he kills. At least Sylar has variety.
