Party Down: Catering To Our Comedy Needs?

Starz debuted their new comedy series Party Down tonight. It's got an incredible pedigree. It's from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, Mars writers John Enbom and Dan Etheridge and genuinely all-around funny guy Paul Rudd. Not too shabby. And the cast is chockablock full of former Mars stars. It's a veritable reunion of sorts. And it is a show about cater-waiters living in LA, biding their time until they get their big breaks. Which means that every week we get a different party with more wacky guests. Seems like the makings of a laugh riot, right?

Well, not exactly. While I like the show, it just wasn't as insanely hysterical as I would have expected it to be. Instead, the three episodes I saw I found charming and mostly amusing, but never really laugh-out-loud funny. Which isn't necessarily a complaint. I've got other shows that crack me up that I can watch, and it's nice to have something sort of quietly entertaining and well-acted. And I've got a feeling that this one will grow on me. But suddenly it is clear to me why it is on Starz, instead of like a bigger cable network known for their original content. This is the sort of show that probably wouldn't fit in well with TBS' "very funny" lineup, for instance.

Seriously, how could I not immediately like a show where Enrico Colantoni, playing a bitter suburbanite, goes skinny dipping in the first episode? And the second episode has Jason Dohring looking all prep-schooly as a future leader, with Alona Tal as his uppity girlfriend. And that's just the guest stars; the rest of the cast is pretty great, too. Adam Scott is a disillusioned actor who is back bartending after his big break led nowhere. Lizzy Caplan (who I loved on The Class, but most people know her from Cloverfield as the girl whose head exploded!) is a wannabe comedian who has a husband who wants to move to Vermont. Ken Marino is a recovering drug/alcohol addict who is trying to be in charge so he can open his dream chain restaurant. Martin Starr (Bill Haverchuck!) and Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas!) are two slacker employees who torture each other. Jane Lynch is a nutjob waitress. Basically, they're a bunch of lovable losers trying not to get fired... which isn't too pressing of a concern, because the only person who has actually been fired apparently got caught masturbating five times before he got the ax. So there's a lot of leeway. Which means there's plenty of time for sex, drugs and general hijinks on the job.

It's got some promise, and the dialogue is fast and well-written, and since it's on Starz, there's hope that it will actually stick around for a while, and get a chance to grow, and give Rob Thomas time to find more ways to work in more alums from my favorite shows.

What'd you think of the first episode? Let us know below.
