Saying The Office sucks now has become kind of the in thing to do on the internet recently, so up until now I've avoided doing it here for a variety of reasons -- not just because I didn't want to join the bandwagon, but mostly because, while it's been disappointing this season, I don't really think it sucks. It's not as funny as it used to be, sure, but it's still funnier than most sitcoms on the air right now. And yet, I haven't been excited to sit down and watch a new episode in a really long time. Why? The answer, I think is actually pretty simple.
I'm just over it.
It's not just that the writing isn't as good. Though I think that is partially what it is, but even when it's up to Season 2 or Season 3 level greatness at times, I still don't laugh the way I did back then because the shtick has gotten old. "That's what she said" isn't funny anymore. Neither are the pranks. Neither is Dwight's whole nature man commando thing. Even Michael's social retardation doesn't make me laugh like it used to. It's a combination of my fickle and disloyal nature and the fact that after five seasons, those jokes just really do not hold up anymore, and I think that's the real core of the recent Office backlash. I have a few additional problems with the show too, though.
I miss Jan.
I just do, that's all. She's always kind of been my favorite supporting character, and I like how she elevates Michael's game. Bring her back.
I've grown to hate Pam (and Jim, but to a lesser extent).
It all started when Pam made a play for Jim during the bonfire in Season 4 with Karen sitting right there, and has just gotten worse ever since. I was never the biggest Jam lover, but in the first three seasons their courtship was cute and it made sense. And back when I thought pranks were funny, things like convincing Dwight he was being recruited by the CIA had me rolling on the floor. Now their relationship just depresses the hell out of me. She dropped out of art school to be a receptionist forever so she can marry Jim and live in that depressing house with him quicker? And bitch about the chairs in the office and write passive aggressive notes about microwave cleanliness in the kitchen? It is believable that a person would do those things -- I'll give them that -- but I just don't have it in me to not hate it, especially when she had so much potential for a while. She and Jim are just such unsympathetic losers now, when they used to be the heroes of the show.
All that being said, being funny for five years is no easy feat, so I'll continue to try to take it easy on The Office most of the time. And continue to hope that in two years I'm not writing the same post about 30 Rock. Power of thinking positive, people.

The Office at it's worst is still better than 99% of the other stuff out there. I'm still watching it and enjoying it, besides it's one of the few shows I can enjoy in 50" of glorious HD until I get DirecTV!
This is pretty much how I feel about The Office, too. It is still better than many other shows, but I'm never excited to see it anymore, not like I used to be. I didn't watch it last week and haven't bothered to try to find it online or anything. It's a bummer!
While the show is not consistent as it once was it is still great. I mean the post-Superbowl episode had me laughing out loud so much in a way I can never remember doing so for the show
It's odd, I feel the same way - I think the Office is one of the best shows on TV but watching it seems like a chore to do before 30 Rock comes on. Not sure why.
I agree with all of this. It's not a bad show. It's a good show. But I think their original strength ultimately became their weakness: they made a show where we cared about the characters and cared about what happened to them, almost as if it were a drama. Ultimately, this is a comedy, and these semi-dramatic arcs tend to outgrow the confines of a comedy, especially a comedy that takes place almost entirely within an office. So the characters got to grow, and then now that they've grown and gone through changes, there's really nowhere for them to go. So Jim and Pam are together, engaged. Now what? In reality, they'd probably be pretty uneventful people, especially after their engagement. But because this is TV, there's a ton of manufactured, silly roadblocks (will Pam get mad Jim bought a house? Will Pam get mad her dad decided to divorce her mom after talking with Jim?). The same goes with Michael. You can only watch him be hapless a certain amount of times before you start to think that maybe he should be fired. Accidentally circulating a half-naked picture of Jan? Funny. Throwing Dwight under a bus for the Willy Wonka idea? Kind of mean.
The UK version ended when the stories ended. I think that was wise.
I 100% agree. I REALLY didn't like when Pam did that to Karen because truthfully, I liked Karen, and she was there for Jim when he was going through a rough patch, and they were actually a nice couple. Now she's just shrewish an I hate that, bc I want to LIKE Pam, and I'm totay bummed she gave up on art school or doing anything else. Why did they make her fail? Why couldn't she have succeeded?
There are still some hilarious moments-Oscar and Andy drunk dialing Angela remains a favorite, but it does seem to have lost what i used to love.
I'm so with you on the Pam/Jam front. I just find them so smug. I can't take it! Break 'em up please. I think they should give Andy a bit more screen time. I like the lil' fella.
The Office still rocks. I actually laugh out loud watching this show. Obviously, the author hasn't watched the show since season 2. In fact she rarely watches the shows she comments on, as demonstrated time and time again.
All I know is Stringer Bell is on tonight.
I have to stand up for Pam and Jim. I think they, at times, actually save the show.
I really do love Pam!
Right! Michael's antics have become way too over the top. He should def be fired for last nights childish refusal to work with the new manager. So fire him, and end it all with Jim as the new branch manager while Dwight silently seethes and plans his demise! It was fun, but it's over now.
Wow you should see it now!
