Today's TWoP News: March 16, 2009

Today's TWoP News: March 16, 2009 In today's roundup: A Ron Silver memorial, The Tonight Show is an inappropriate place for important people who have better things to do, Sons of Anarchy hires the perfect new guest star, the Sci Fi Channel has lost its damn mind, Top Model hopefuls are a violent people, and Chevy Chase does what Chevy Chase does.

The great Ron Silver passed away yesterday after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer at the age of 62. I loved him in everything he was in, but if you've never seen his incredibly self-aware and hilarious work in Heat Vision and Jack, I recommend you do so immediately.

If you missed Kings last night because you were watching Phil in his man panties on The Amazing Race like I was, I wouldn't stress about it. The premiere bombed in the ratings, and will probably not live very long, and I'm like, what? People don't like two-hour premieres of heavy-handed Biblical allegory set in an alternate future reality promoted by months of really vague yet self-important trailer bombardments during The Biggest Loser at eight o'clock on a Sunday? Weird. Didn't see that coming.

Some semi-stuntcasting that I can get behind: Henry Rollins will be on Sons of Anarchy next season, hopefully playing his DEA character from Bad Boys II. Whatever character he plays, some FX suit assures us in a press release that Henry "will bring his muscularity to this complex part," which is probably the funniest and most duh thing I've read all day.

There was some kind of stampede at the NYC America's Next Top Model open call, due to a combination of people standing in line forever being cranky and also thinking a passing car in need of a smog check was a bomb of some sort (it wasn't). Some people were injured and Tyra is apparently concerned, but nothing major went down. Auditioning for ANTM is not for the weak.

I don't like to use this word in the blog very often because I'm a dainty lady, but why the fuck is Barack Obama going on Leno on Thursday?

Chevy Chase joined that Joel McHale NBC show Community, playing a 65-year-old community college student. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I hate this.

In an attempt to get thrown in their lockers by other nerds now, The Sci Fi channel has changed its name to "SyFy" in order to trick people who think Sci Fi is for dweebs into watching the channel. Which could work, until those people tune in and see Android Apocalypse and go, "Ohhhh, right. Sy. Fy. I'm outta here."
