Scripted shows about matchmakers have not fared well in the last decade. Cupid (original flavor) got cancelled; Miss Match was a blink-and-you-missed-it series; there was that terrible CW sitcom Love, Inc; the even worse sorta-CW series Valentine; and this fall's The Ex List (about a girl finding love with the help of a psychic) was the latest similarly themed casuality. I was hoping that this new version of Cupid would buck the trend since it's got a lot going for it. The original has a strong cult following, it's from the mind of Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and Bobby Cannavale seems like a good fit to take over the role originated by Jeremy Piven. But I've been nothing but disappointed since the show premiered. In fact when I found out that last night's Cupid had been bumped for an episode of The Unusuals, I was relieved. Probably not as relieved as our weecapper Cindy, but for me it was one less thing I had to worry about watching. This is not how I wanted to be feeling about any show from Rob Thomas at this point... or really at any point. Sorry, Mr. Thomas, I much prefer your current Party Down... at least that makes me laugh.
The romantic in me wanted to love this show at first sight, but the cynic in me realizes that with most relationships you need to know when things just aren't going to work out. That's the case here. I'm about ready to cut my losses, because I've got a bunch of issues with the show... not the least of which is that I can barely stay awake when it is on. The dialogue isn't sharp and witty, and the gimmick feels tired after three outings. The supporting cast of friends/barflies seems tacked-on, like an afterthought, and the couple-of-the-week scenario only works if you like the couples, which is hard, since you barely know them, and then if you do like them, they're gone the next week. But the biggest problem is the lack of chemistry between the two leads, Bobby Cannavale's Cupid/Trevor and Sarah Paulson's Claire.
Their charmless relationship wouldn't be such a problem if the show didn't keep insisting that these two should be together. It would be fine if the set-up was that she was the skeptic and he was the dreamer and they bickered their way through the day, but that's not the case here. Having characters (like Claire's mom) constantly insisting that they are a couple, or thinking they are together, or putting them in romantic scenarios, still isn't going to make me buy them as Cupid and Psyche. There aren't any sparks. This is no David and Maddie, or Sam and Diane, or Mulder and Scully. Opposites may attract, but even their sparring matches aren't that entertaining. I'm much more engaged with the couple on Castle right now, and I don't even care if they ever date, I just like seeing them going head-to-head all the time.
Perhaps my expectations for Cupid were too high. When I think of Rob Thomas and a romantic couple, Logan and Veronica immediately come to mind. On paper, they're a terrible pair, but together they set the screen on fire. But Trevor and Claire are more like Veronica and Piz, where you can buy them as pals, but not romantically entangled. I'm not sure it is the actors' fault that they lack that magical spark when paired up -- sometimes acting skills can't even generate that sort of unpredictable heat that makes these relationships believable -- but someone along the way should have considered recasting if the entire series rests on their shoulders.
Basically, this show about love is breaking my heart, and the TV gods must be crazy if they think that I'm going to stick around much longer. And I can't imagine that non-VM or old-school Cupid lovers will even last that long. Perhaps if they had titled this series Miss Matched...

Sarah Paulson is kind of a showkiller :(. Sorry, Rob Thomas, you were awesome, but you couldn't beat her bad mojo.
Admin, sorry, seem to have been some submission problems - please delete repeat posts above.
So, demac, what's your opinion on Sarah Paulson again?
Poor demac, he seems to have some spontaneous submission issues going on.
I really want to like this show, but it's just not happening for me. I like the guest stars, and I like Cannavale, and I even like that Felix guy, but Sarah Paulson's Claire feels all wrong to me. I heard a rumor that Jenna Elfman was their first choice, and I keep wishing the PTB had cast her instead.
I've only watched 2/3 of the episodes. I can buy that Cupid has an attraction to Claire. He pulls that off - but, she does not have any sort of thing for him.
I also have issues with their ideas of "love". That whole screen-saver of the girl by the Private Eye is creepy. They need couples to take longer than an episode to fall in love.
Also - the moment they kiss the gods declare it true love? Some true love couples can (and should) take longer to fall in love.
What could help the love at first sight - they should have made it more fairy-tale-esque, like Pushing Daisies
Jenna Elfman would have been worse. I liked the original series better. Kill this show already.
I think the problem is the casting, namely Paulson. Who can't have chemistry with Bobby Cannavale? The first two episodes were ok. The last one was pretty annoying. But I agree, if the show's premise is that the two leads are supposed to be heating up the screen, this just is never going to work.
Paulson's definitely the problem here, and usually I like her. But, she plays Claire so unlikable-all she does is complain and condescend to people. Its very hard to buy her as a therapist because her snottiness and above-it-all attitude would drive patients away. Certainly it doesn't make me want to watch the characer, or root for her to get someone as hot and awesome as Bobby Canavale.
whole screen-saver of the girl by the Private Eye is creepy.
So, so creepy. I had to put it aside to get through the episode.
Also - the moment they kiss the gods declare it true love?
No. Time elapses, sometimes days, or weeks between scenes. It's still not good.
Angel, you'll let me know right away once it's canceled, right? Pretty please.
The obvious problem with the show is the lack of chemistry between the two stars. The bigger problem though, is the writing. It's clunky and when it comes to fruition on screen, you can tell. Also the couple-a-show thing is awful which is why we get "creep screensaver" as love.
I like the show a lot and am more than willing to give it a shot. But it's probably not for hardcore old-Cupid fans, but my friends and I like it. It's relatable, which Pushing Daisies wasn't but still escapist, much like Sex and the City.
