A new season of The Tudors started last night, and it was pretty much as you would expect. Elegantly shot, gorgeous costumes, well-acted and a little bit boring. By all rights I should love this show. I have adored Jonathan Rhys-Meyers since Velvet Goldmine. I'm a sucker for period dramas. There's plenty of nudity and violence. All things I enjoy in a television series. But every time I sit down to watch it, I find myself struggling to stay awake.
All of the parts of this work well together, and it really is lovely to look at, but after three episodes my attention usually starts to wane. And then I feel guilty. When watching the premiere, they played footage from the Anne Boleyn-centric second season, and I felt like I should go back and catch up, but then remembered that I tried and lost interest a few weeks in. Perhaps it is the fact that I know how everything turns out. But I'll rewatch movies, or re-read books. It seems to be something specific to this particular piece of history, and maybe knowing that my favorite of the wives has already had her head chopped off. I can't quite put my finger on the problem, since I have no real issue with the show itself. I think it comes down to the fact that while it is a solid series, it isn't engrossing somehow, despite the juicy subject matter.
This season started off well enough. There's lots of Jane Seymour (not the medicine woman). There's an uprising going on. There's plenty of twisted moments between Henry and his daughter Mary. They've decided not to make Henry all fat (woo-hoo! Way to buck convention to keep the pretty around longer). And there's a nasty festering boil that makes me grateful that I live in a society with modern medicine. Still, not sure that it will keep my attention the entire season, though I'm going to attempt to stick it out to see Joss Stone as Anne of Cleaves. Mostly because I'm curious to see if she can act or not. I'd bet not, but since she is playing a character without a big English vocabulary and she likes to drink and gamble... maybe she can handle it. Since that's pretty much a dream role.
What do you think? Are you a big fan of the show? Or does it bore you to tears?
