A record (I guess) six ABC-related news bites today... and while two of them involve Grey's Anatomy, none of them have anything to do with an actor leaving! Gotta take your wins where you can.
Not sure if this really counts as news since we've been expecting it since before the series premiered, but NBC finally yanked Kings. Sorry, McShane fans... the remaining episodes will burn off starting June 13 in the Saturday 8 PM slot -- and while the network hasn't officially announced cancellation, I'd go ahead and take it off my fall TiVo list.
In other series-pulling news, ABC has chosen to cut short both In the Motherhood and Samantha Who?, replacing their remaining scheduled episodes with an old Grey's tonight (though fortunately not one with ghost sex) and the return of Ugly Betty, for the ten of you who were still watching.
ABC has also announced a whole bunch of pickups for next season, but none of them (besides maybe Ugly Betty) are much of a surprise... no word on Samantha Who?, The Unusuals, Cupid, or any other bubble shows. Although did you know that they're thinking of keeping Scrubs around with a new cast? That's about as good an idea as Season 2 of Surviving Suburbia.
Another reason why True Blood kicks TV ass...they're casting Evan Rachel Wood as Sophie-Anne LeClerq, 15-year-old (though technically 500-year-old, but age is how you feel) vampire queen of Louisiana. This is perfect casting -- Evan is really pale, fond of dressing in vampire-esque clothing, and has plenty of experience behaving like someone much older (though not wiser... Marilyn Manson, really?).
VH1 is renewing a crapload (pun... maybe intentional) of series, including Celebrity Rehab, Brooke Knows Best, I Want to Work for Diddy, and my personal favorite, Tool Academy. And some more Dr. Drew shows, because his affably bland persona is just what America needs in these confusing times.
Unfortunately for Penny fans, Kaley Cuoco has had to cancel her guest spot on the Grey's season finale due to a "publicity related commitment." Dagnabbit, we were counting on her to distract us from Izzie's inevitably aggravating death!
ABC seems to think that the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? mania supposedly set off by Slumdog Millionaire will peak right around the middle of August... or at least I assume that's why they're airing eleven Regis-hosted episodes in primetime starting August 8th (oh and it'll be the 10th anniversary...whatever). Nice try, ABC, but you're going to have to try a little harder if you want us to pretend it's 1999 with you. Like by bringing back Sabrina the Teenaged Witch. Now that was a quality show.
Good news, Henry fans! Your favorite reluctant baby daddy will make a return on the May 21 finale of Ugly Betty. Hasn't Betty suffered enough at the hands of this square-spectacled heartbreaker? I mean, Facebook friending her?? Come on!!
Troubled by the doctors of Seattle Grace spending all their time naked in the on-call room instead of caring for patients (or the many other sins of Grey's)? Then you'll be even more disturbed by ABC's new series pickup, a Canadian show called "Copper" that purports to be Grey's for rookie cops! Though it's always been my belief that law enforcement officers should be allowed to hook up with each other on the job -- catching criminals can be pretty damn tense.
