Assuming your brain has recovered from exposure to details of the Speidi wedding, take a break from the Monday blahs with these TV newsbites. There's some (mildly) good news for Deadwood fans, some bad news for fans of Sophie and Roommates (yes, those are TV shows), and some awesome news for fans of networks jumping on bandwagons!
Despite the almost-certain cancellation of Kings, Deadwood fans have a little something to smile about: Timothy Olyphant, a.k.a. Sheriff Seth Bullock, got the lead in an FX pilot based on the Elmore Leonard short story "Fire in the Hole." And apparently Olyphant will be playing pretty much the exact same character: a US Marshal who enjoys wearing cowboy boots and a holster on his hip. Guess typecasting can be good, sometimes.
Mark your calendars for July 7: that's the date when the SciFi Network compels us to speak vulgarities in Polish changes its name to SyFy! They've also announced series renewals for Eureka, Ghost Hunters, and Ghost Hunters International along with the pickup of scripted series Warehouse 13, which appears to be The X-Files set in a storage facility (so that's where the pictures from my alien abduction went!).
Roommates and Sophie are getting evicted from ABC Family. Both shows have been getting dismal ratings, so the network is tossing Sophie immediately while allowing Roommates till the end of the month to clear out (with two two-hour marathons to burn off the remaining episodes!). Bet Kyle XY is pissed these jerks ruined his apartment.
David Simon, creator of HBO's The Wire, is apparently developing a project about the history of the CIA. I believe this story was recently told in 2006's The Good Shepherd, although I can't say for sure because I fell asleep two minutes in.
Boy, dancing shows are sure popular... as are weight loss shows... OMG! We should combine them! Great job, Oxygen, for acting on my awesome idea! The unsubtly-titled Dance Your Ass Off premieres June 29 with a former Tracy Turnblad, a.k.a. the original overweight dancing queen, Marissa Jaret Winokur, as host. Hope she brings her hairspray!
Know what else is popular? Fashion design shows... so MTV is pole-vaulting onto that already-crowded bandwagon with The Stylist, which hopefully will not involve The Hills cast members in any way. They're also renewing Parental Control, which is only my favorite "Why the hell don't I go to bed, it's 3:18 AM!" show ever!
The Chopping Block is getting un-chopped! Well, really just warmed up in the microwave... NBC is airing the remaining episodes starting Friday, June 19. Burning off never tasted so... mediocre.
File this one under "Who Cares"...Giuliana and Bill Rancic are getting their own reality series on the Style Network. If they're going to give reality shows to E! personalities, couldn't they start with Joel McHale, or Seacrest? Or maybe both together... hmm...
And in serious news, legendary television actress Bea Arthur passed away this Saturday, April 25. One of the greatest and most fearless comic actresses of our time, she will be missed.
