BLOGS
With two recent surprise deaths (R.I.P., Derek and Kutner), we were inspired to look back at some others that caught us off-guard in the same way. We're not talking J.R. Ewing (who lived, anyway) back in the day, or even Adriana on The Sopranos -- these are the recent out-of-left-field deaths that surprised us so much we had our jaws hanging on the floor. In some cases (Prison Break, 24 and Lost) we could practically have created 10 "wow" deaths from each show, that's how much they like blindsiding fans. (Not nice, for the record.) But we decided to spread the wealth as we present our list of the most shocking deaths of the last few seasons. Fair warning: There might be info that some of you may consider spoilers, if you aren't caught up on your TV viewing.
1. Amber (House)
With the dream sequences and the shocking bus crash, we were floored when we found out that House's hallucinations were clues to Amber being the injured passenger. And the fact that her death was from flu meds, compounded with House's drunken stupidity, was a twist we didn't see coming. We didn't even know her real name for half the season, but we were still as stunned and angry about it as Wilson.
2. Libby and Ana-Lucia (Lost)
We knew from the get-go that Michael would do just about anything for his son Walt, but killing Ana-Lucia in order to free Ben? Wow. We didn't think he had it in him. And poor Libby was just collateral damage, walking into a bad, messed-up situation. This one-two punch made our jaws drop.
3. Bill Buchanan (24)
If Bill had to go down, at least he got to go down swinging. This show's good guy was taken hostage and then decided to sacrifice his own life by tackling a terrorist and setting off an explosion in order to save others... including Jack Bauer. The unstoppable Bauer had planned to risk his own life to take down the bad guys.
4. Cally (Battlestar Galactica)
If the exhausted and depressed Cally had killed herself and her kid after finding out that her husband was a Cylon, we wouldn't have been that surprised. Sad, but not shocked. But factoring in the badass Tory, who so desperately wanted to save the (presumed) hybrid child that she talked Cally down from the ledge, took her baby and then shot her out of the airlock? That was cold and shocking and made us question everything we knew about Tory.
5. Derek (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles)
While so many deaths on this show are a long time coming, and well-deserved, Derek's happened in a split-second. One minute the Connor clan is trying to protect a girl from a Terminator, and a moment later Derek's lying on the ground with a bullet hole in the middle of his head. And with danger imminent, we weren't even given a chance to mourn before the Connors were on the run again.
6. Tosh and Owen (Torchwood)
Who would have guessed that in an ensemble show with only five characters, two of them would end up dead and gone within minutes of each other? Owen had been technically dead (or undead) for a while when he wound up inside a radioactive nuclear power plant without any hope of escaping, but that being paired with Tosh's nearly simultaneous death from a bullet wound (caused by Capt. Jack's brother) made the whole thing heartbreaking. At least they went down trying to save the world and their team members.
7. Shane (The Shield)
We'd barely gotten over Shane shockingly killing Lem when the sociopathic cop decided to take his own life. We could have coped with his loss -- this is a gritty crime drama, after all -- and we didn't expect everyone to survive the final season, but when he decided to poison his whole family before shooting himself? That was a breathless twist that we didn't see coming, and still has us reeling.
8. Kutner (House)
We didn't see Kutner's suicide, only his body. This completely random death was something that seemed to happen out of thin air and without any warning. No Kutner being mopey and depressed for episodes on end. Just one sad-looking picture -- that was the only evidence that this world had become too much for the doctor and caused him to take his own life.
9. Donna (Sons of Anarchy)
Again, like The Shield, we sort of expect some casualties on a show coping with such dark and twisted subject matter. But to see the innocent Donna go down by accident, when the biker gang were really gunning for her husband, was a brutal way to go.
10. Elle (Heroes)
Sylar kills people all the time, but he almost developed a sweet relationship with the electric Elle, who taught him how to take powers without slicing heads open. And when an eclipse knocked out their powers, he was nearly a changed man. But when his powers returned, his dastardly side returned as well, and it was murder instead of sex on the beach for Elle.
Honorable Mentions:
The guy who Tyra killed on Friday Night Lights -- If only because the subsequent storyline was so random for that show.
Layfayette on True Blood -- Well, we think he's dead, given all the evidence that has piled up and based on the source material for the show. But we're still holding out hope that maybe we're wrong.
John Winchester on Supernatural -- This one was a bit of a surprise, but in a war against demons, someone was bound to die, and it wasn't going to be one of the two leads. Besides, Jeffrey Dean Morgan does good death scenes.
Sarah on Prison Break -- This show kills people constantly, but seeing Sarah's head in a box was a real stunner. Too bad it all turned out to be a fake.
What are the most shocking recent deaths that had you staring at your TV in disbelief?

How about Dualla on Battlestar Galactica?
I guess I'm dating myself - but what about when Gary died on thirtysomething? TOTALLY out of left field...
Tara on Buffy, Doyle on Angel
I'll go one even old - Col. Blake on MASH.
If we're not limited to "recent" deaths, I'm going to add Kate Todd on NCIS and Tessa on Highlander.
I'm with ako712 on the Whedon deaths, and I'd also toss in Joyce on 'Buffy' and Fred on 'Angel'.
I have to agree Dee's death was WAY more shocking, and moving, than Cally's.
I'll add Fitz from the "West Wing." I'm still mad about that.
This would be a reasonable list if it were Most Shocking TV Deaths of the Decade, but there was no such qualifier. Therefore some thought should be given to the deaths of characters from prior decades.
With that in mind, nothing was more shocking than the death of Lt. Colonel Henry Blake in M*A*S*H. Hell, even the actors didn't know:
"The script pages with the scene were handed over by the producers, Larry Gelbart and Gene Reynolds, only a few minutes before filming, so none of the cast knew about that development until a few minutes before Gary Burghoff was told to go in and report that Blake had died. Up until then, as far as anyone knew, they were going to get a message that Blake had arrived safely home. This was deliberately planned so that the emotions shown by the actors during that scene would be as real as possible, and it worked well, so much so that during the second take of the scene one of the extras accidentally dropped a surgical instrument on the floor which made a loud clank." Roslyn Shays falling down the elivator shaft on LA Law is #1 of all time for me.
Even thought I wasn't super crazy about the show I thought the murder of Bonnie, the deaf sister, on Jericho was extremely surprising and quite heart wrenching.
Shocking that no one has posted yet about the death of Kutner on "House"! Didn't see that coming - but that's because even the writer and producer didn't know about it until about 3 episodes ago. Rather than start writing hints into the next episodes they went for full drama. Even more shocking though is the reason for his death - he is leaving the show to be part of the Obama administration....can you picture Kumar on Capitol Hill?
Yeah, I'd have to go with Dee's death on BSG as more shocking than Cally's. We saw Cally's death coming for at least two minutes before it happened. Dee's was just out of the blue.
why did kuthner and amber die? awnser me this? do you know why? i do. It was house being an ass all the time, but that dosnet stop this show from beind awesome.
I have to agree. Dee's suicide was totally unexpected and shocking, and I didn't stop trembling for the rest of the episode.
I'll have to agree with everyone that Dee's death was way more shocking. One minute she's happy and the next she's dead.
I'll have to agree with everyone that Dee's death was way more shocking. One minute she's happy and the next she's dead.
What About Warrick Brown on CSI
Regarding your opening paragraph, JR Ewing did not die from being shot. There was a reunion movie where he is alive and well and regains control of the oil company.
Sheriff Lamb on Veronica Mars! That was definitely out of left field.
Buffy Summer's mom was the most affecting to me.
Most Shocking TV Deaths of the last 3 years, more like....
The most shocking TV deaths for me would either have to be Nath on Six Feet Under or Lucy in season 6 of ER. Both completely floored me in the way they were handled. The end of the original Life on Mars was a good one, too.
Tara on Buffy was the one that left me gaping at the screen.
With BSG I didn't care that much for the later seasons so the death that really got to me was Billy's.
Gant on ER....I still get chills everytime that beeper goes off!
The shot of Lucy Knight after Carter was stabbed on ER may be the single most shocking things I've ever seen on TV.
Good Call with Col. Blake....I remember when the old man who owned the grocery store on sesame street died...
Jack on Alias.
What about Keith on One Tree Hill? I did not see that coming at all and was left gaping open mouthed at my TV screen!!
Owen & Tosh's deaths on Torchwood broke my heart - didn't see it coming at all and cried for half an hour. I just don't think it was necessary at all.
And Amber on House. Just too sad.
Wash in Serenity. This was especially shocking if you were a Firefly fan from the get-go (as opposed to seeing the movie first).
Even older than MASH--All in the Family. When a swastika was painted on Archie's front door and a guy from a Jewish group came to protect them--then got blown up in his car.
I think Joyce's death on Buffy was already listed before.
Notice that this a "list of the most shocking deaths of the LAST FEW seasons"
But, yeah, Joyce's death is the most traumatic thing on TV ever.
Like Keith, Buffy's mother's death was really sad. It was one of the saddest episode I ever watch.
Gant on ER.
I don't know if someone remembers it but Evan in Nash Bridges.
"I'll go one even old - Col. Blake on MASH."
You beat me to it.
Also, Mr. Hooper from Sesame Street. It was very sad and the cast and crew handled it beautifully.
Marian on BBC's Robin Hood. Hello, she's MAID MARIAN!
I have to agree with David that Wash on Serenity was a total shocker.
Also, Melissa (Scully's sister) on the X-Files. For a show that killed off several great recurring characters (yes, I'm still mad about Krycek), Melissa's death was the one that stunned me the most.
On the West Wing I'll see you your Fitz and raise you Mrs. Landingham. That one killed me!
If we include older deaths, what about Romano on "E.R."? I still remember sitting on the couch with my mouth open when I saw that helicopter.
Maude Flanders from "The Simpsons". So random and so unexpected.
David Palmer on "24". No way I expected the former President to be killed.
The other woman on Desperate Housewives, the mother of Lynette's husband's daughter (can't remember the name of the actress OR the character) in the supermarket. Laurie Metcalfe played the psycho who held them hostage, and she said one thing, and BAM! shot in the chest.
I completely agree and was shocked that it was not shown in the clip show before the finale. I will never forget that scene!
Sheriff Lamb on Veronica Mars. So random! And I'll never forget "I smell bread."
Roslyn Shays absolutely! Can still remember the gathering around the water cooler the following day!
Chris on Skins. It wasn't surprising, but shocking nevertheless.
Dee's death was heartbreaking, shocking, and yet made perfect sense. Poor Dee, if she only held out a little bit longer, she could be frolicking with Lee at the dawn of history on Earth.
Another shocking one was Jack's wife on the first season of 24. I was floored when she wound up dead, I couldn't believe that they would do that after the horrible day she had. And she was pregnant too!
I agree about Dee's death, it was a bigger shock than Cally's; and unlike Cally's I don't think anyone saw it coming.
emphasis on "most shocking recent deaths that had you staring at your TV in disbelief?"
I would have say Dualla on BSG as for most recent. But one that enraged and deeply moved me was Amber aka Bitch (HOUSE) top honors for sure!
While 'Oz' was a show where you never could really count on anyone to live very long, I was really taken aback when Said killed Adebisi. Because - Adebisi!
And yeah, I agree about Joyce from BtVS. I just rewatched the series, and I burst into tears as soon as Buffy comes home and whimpers that "...Mommy?"
Mrs. Landingham on The West Wing was very unexpected for me.
Richie on Highlander completely shocked me.
The entire cast (well, almost) of Blake's 7.
Regarding Lost deaths, Libby and Ana Lucia weren't half as shocking as Alex. Not only was it sudden and brutal, it was the result of one of Ben's plans failing, something you never thought you'd see.
I gotta throw Ryan Chappelle out there for the 24 list. . Jack executes his own boss? That's pretty shocking.
Alex on Third Watch. Girl was severed in half and still alive for a few minutes.
Glad to see that other people remember Gant and Lucy on ER. Kowalski on Stargate SG1 really surprised me. Also, if I remember correctly, there was a show "Forever Knight" about 15 years ago that wiped out almost the whole cast in the last couple of episodes. No happy endings there.
billy on Ally McBeal
omg...bonnie on Jericho for sure, how awful was that, and by awful I mean it was great, but awful at the same time...you know what i'm saying...
Andrea on Ghost Whisperer caught me by surprise. So did Danielle on Lost.
Anya on Buffy.
Definitely Wash on Serenity, and Ben on Scrubs (season 3, Brendan Fraser).
I still think of tosh and owen- mostly tosh though, as being on the show. My brain just can't comprehend that she's gone. Too fucking sad.
I think kutner's suicide is pretty realistic. Sometime people who are depressed don't show it and you don't know till it is too late.
I'd have to put Dee from Galactica on there. Her suicide was probably one of the most unexpected and shocking deaths on television, but it was one that made perfect sense. Kutner's suicide, on the other hand, was random, poorly handled, and only put on so that they could get Kal Penn out of the show. And Amber at Number One? Surprising, yes, but her death was definitely not worthy of the Number One slot.
Judith on Joan of Arcadia. Didn't see that coming at all. Even though she often annoyed me as a character, her death was sudden and excruciating, and Sprague Graydon acted the hell out of it.
Judith on Joan of Arcadia. Didn't see that coming at all. Even though she often annoyed me as a character, her death was sudden and excruciating, and Sprague Graydon acted the hell out of it.
Katlin Todd from NCIS and Kutner, bv. I don't really remember the rest of that episode.. Sara had better recap quickly!
"We're not talking J.R. Ewing (who lived, anyway) back in the day..."
BSG's Dee's death was most definately a shocker, way more than Cally who fans wanted killed off anyway. Dee, especially since, we saw her struggling and then those hours of happiness with Lee followed by her pulling the trigger was just too heartbreaking.
Not completely surprising, considering the storyline that proceeded it for several episodes, but I remember being very affected when Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) died on NYPD Blue.
Hate to nitpick, but it was Landry who killed Tyra's attacker on Friday Night Lights.
Most shocking though - Lucy on ER.
Yes! Rosalyn Shays was the most shocking thing ever---and before the internets and spoilers and all that, so just totally out of left field. Down an elevator shaft, just like that!
Boone & Shannon on Lost. I found them more shocking than Ana Lucia & Libby. Boone was the first major death and it felt like it came out of nowhere.
Claire Kincaid & Alexandra Borgia on Law & Order.
Paul Hennessy on 8 Simple Rules. We all new it was happening because of the death of John Ritter but it was still shocking. This death was truly out of left field because the writers had no choice.
Valerie on Valerie's Family. Title character killed off screen after the 2nd season of the show! Definitely shocking and out of left field since the wirters had no choice when Valerie Harper left.
I agree with other who mentioned:
Gant, Romano, & Lucy on ER.
Tara, Joyce, Jenny, & Buffy on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Co sign the Buffy and Angel deaths. Especially Joyce and Tara.
Cassidy Cassablancas on Veronica Mars. All summer, I didn't believe it; I kept thinking he had some plan, and he didn't really just step off the building.
On Battlestar, Dee's was definitely the most unexpected, Billy's one of the saddest, but Starbuck's death floored me. I'm still not sure what happened there.
absotively posilutley THE most unseen death in ages. kutner's & the MASH death also surprised the crap out of audiences.
Ellsworth from deadwood...
Nobody mentions Kareem Said from OZ?
Did anyone see that coming?
Lucy on ER! What better evidence than all these posts from people still shocked at how she died? And Joyce from BtVS definitely is #2. But there's no topping that last scene where Carter sees our sweet Lucy all pale and covered in blood... That scene never gets old.
As embarrassing as this is to admit, I found Billy's death on Ally McBeal shocking as there was no big deal made about the episode and suddenly he is dead. I was not expecting him to die. I'm also hoping that somehow Boone can come back to life on Lost. His death really was the start of the end of my fascination with the show.
Joyce wasn't that shocking, as she had been sick for what felt like forever. Tara's was much more shocking and out of left field.
Dee was more shocking than Callies, maybe because we all liked Dee more? I always wanted to give Tory a medal for killing of Callie. Sorry, but Callie got on. My. Last. Nerve!
I have a very poor memory for names. But remember Miami Vice? There was a pair of sort of goofy cops who put together bugs and other gadgets. One of them ended up dead, overdoesed by some of the bad guys. It ruined part of the dynamic of the whole show. I figure the writers thought that it would be a growth experience for the surviving buddy, but instead that character sort of stagnated.
Tara's was shocking. I'd also, though, mention Anya - alive one instant, dead the next. No build-up, no slow-mo moment to reflect afterwards, it was probably the most realistic battle-death on television.
I totally agree with Lucy's death on ER--that scene with her on the floor haunts me to this day. I think it was made even worse because Alex was trying to save her, but Lucy was conscious and knew she was going to die. If that ep was ever in a rerun, I would not be able to watch it again.
I'm also really glad someone mentioned Ben on Scrubs. I've never been so shocked by a TV character's death--I'm talking about instantaneous sobbing when the twist is revealed at the end. I seriously cried again the next day just thinking about it! That's good writing.
Kate's death on NCIS still rattles me like crazy. I can barely watch the Ari episodes because of it.
Also, Henry Blake's off-screen death on M*A*S*H never gets any easier to take.
I'd add Fred from Angel to the list. That one was a total shocker for me and true, she stuck around as Illuria (or whatever her name was) for a few episodes, but Fred was effectively dead and as far as I could tell, that was totally out of left field.
I agree with Jack Bristow on Alias! Shocking and unneccessary.
Joyce on Buffy: Buffy and Dawn reaction. Ana-Lucia on Lost: Michael why? Nikki an Paulo on Lost - couple buried alive: They are still alive!!
Joyce on Buffy: Buffy and Dawn reaction. Ana-Lucia on Lost: Michael why? Nikki an Paulo on Lost - couple buried alive: They are still alive!!
Speed from CSI Miami. Never saw it coming. Also Richard the DA on The Practice.
On Lost, I was so shocked when Michael shot Ana-Lucia...I don't think I picked my jaw up for a week, but I was more shocked by Alex's death. That scene is heartbreaking. I think I would have been really shocked by Shannon's death had I not already known about it. Boone dying was no shock...a baby was being born, they're being all poetic or whatever by having one person die while another is born. I found it cheesy, but certainly not shocking.
I was not at all shocked by Elle's death on Heroes. It's probably made more sense than anything they've done since, well, it's possibly made the most sense of anything they've ever done. The whole time she was with Sylar I kept thinking to myself "Okay, since she also has abilities, how long is it going to take Sylar to realize he's not special around her? When is he going to kill her?" I was so happy. She annoyed the crap out of me.
Ray Fiske from Damages. It even shocked Patty Hewes.
And Lucy's death on ER. That image of her lying on the floor as Carter looks over still sticks in my mind.
Oh, on Alias, Jack's death broke my heart (and was totally the most heroic moment in that show, ever), but as far as shock factor? Francie's, earlier in the series, was definitely the most surprising.
Santos from Ugly Betty. Watching Hilda delude herself for so long with her visions of him, and then to learn the truth... weeping! I was!
And how about most shocking un-deaths? (potential spoiler) I had pretty much convinced myself that on Lost, Ben had killed Penny, and possibly the son, and to have that not be true...SHOCKER! Glad, of course, but still shocked. I thought that was how they were going to get Desmond back to the island. Phew.
Anyone else remember Joe Coffey on Hill Street Blues? That one was tough to take.
Adding my two cents to lucy on er. It still haunts me as well ...that weird techno music playing.ugh still shocking after all these years
Adding my two cents to lucy on er. It still haunts me as well ...that weird techno music playing.so well done and a great use of music to add to the creepiness factor...ugh still shocking after all these years
Adding my two cents to lucy on er. It still haunts me as well ...that weird techno music playing.so well done and a great use of music to add to the creepiness factor...ugh still shocking after all these years
Shanadana: I only joined West Wing after she died, so not as shocking for me...but you're right!
I can't believe no one has mentioned Omar in "The Wire."
I can't believe no one has mentioned Omar in "The Wire."
"Alex on Third Watch. Girl was severed in half and still alive for a few minutes."
Thank you for Third Watch. Such a sad death. I loved that show.
"Alex on Third Watch. Girl was severed in half and still alive for a few minutes."
Thank you for mentioning Third Watch. Such a sad death. I loved that show.
Veronica on Prison Break. I thought she was going to be Linc's happy ending and was shocked to see how they killed her!
I think Pratt's death on ER was devastating. He seemed to be okay and I still don't understand exactly what happened, but man was it sad!
And Joyce on Buffy, those episodes still floor me. And Sheriff Lamb and Meg on Veronica Mars--it's kind of annoying that both died off-screen.
I know! She's not supposed to die, Marian and Robin are supposed to live happily ever after...
Don't forget Halfrek
Hello?! Marissa Cooper on the OC was the biggest shocker ever!
Andrea in Ghost Whisperer caught me by surprise too! When Mel started talking to her brother, telling him how sorry she was, I freaked!
hello what about denny on greys anatomy!!!! saddest thing ever!!!
I think Tara's death was the most shocking to me. I don't believe Romano died from the Helicopter, he just had his arm chopped off.
The Hospital Lawyer from Chicago Hope who was killed by a mugger was pretty shocking too.
I'd still have to go with Col. Blake for most shocking, mainly because no one knew until Radar came in.
As for more recent, both Dr. Frasier in SG-1 and Dr. Becket in Atlantis were pretty out of left field.
I'd also say Dee's was pretty shocking on Galactica. Early in the episode I remember thinking that they'd want to watch her because she wasn't taking it well. After her date with Lee though I thought she'd be ok. Then to pull her pistol like that, that was shocking.
I could not disagree more with Joyce from Buffy. Joyce had been sick for almost the whole season. Her death was expected. The list was most 'shocking' deaths. It's not shocking if they're building up her death the whole season.
I think Kutner's death was shocking, just because we didn't expect it at all.
As a self-proclaimed, obsessed House fan, I must say that, for those of us who cracked and read the spoilers (just about everyone!), Kutner's death was not a shocker as much as an event that left us sitting on the sofa, crying our eyes out. Don't deny it. You were sobbing too. I know that I considered not going to school the next day. I continue to fangirl Kutner (almost as much as I fangirl Chase!), and he shall always live on in our hearts.
Amber ultimately deserves the top spot. Her death, too, had me bawling, partially because I miss her cutthroat attitude and partially because she made Wilson happy, and Wilson seriously needs some happiness. Now.
Also, if this list were to add cover-up deaths, then I would totally add Booth (from FOX's Bones) to the list in the top three, for his cover-up death in the season three finale. That was such a sad episode.
Agree with Joyce and Tara and Anya from BTVS and throw in that season ender when Buffy took that sacrificial swan dive off the building... I was sobbing.
I also agree with many of the others already posted here, but can't believe no one mentioned Cherry White the Donut Dolly from China Beach. That was startling and heart wrenching. I watched that sophomore year with my suitemates and we were all in tears. Unforgettable. I can still see her silhouetted in the bunker doorway...
Re: Joyce on Buffy. Actually, it was a shock. She had recovered from her illness and had just gone on a very successful date before Buffy found her.
My first thought when I saw the title was Gary on 30 Something and then Col. Blake on MASH.
As for BGS, I'd have to say Dee's was the most shocking, but I have to say almost as shocking (and the most upsetting) was Tigh killing Ellen.
100% Lucy on ER. When I saw the headline "Most Shocking TV Deaths," that haunting scene was the first thing that came to mind.
People keep mentioning Tosh and Owen, but nobody's mentioned Owen's first death. I found that much more shocking than his second death, because how long can you really keep a walking corpse around, even on a show like Torchwood?
To go along with the Whedon deaths, what about Lawrence Dominic on Dollhouse this week? He's not dead as such, but he's pretty darn close.
And was I the only one shocked by Tasha Yar's death back in the day?
JT Yorke from Degrassi TNG. What, Canadian TV still counts as TV right?
As Veronica Mars-loving as TWOP is (and rightly so) I can't believe that they missed Lamb. Cassidy's big shock was that he was the killer, not really that he died. It was bound to happen the second Logan got on the roof.
Also Meg wasn't that much of a shock. I was kinda shocked that they woke her up first, but there is no way they were going to keep her alive.
Other than the VM-world, ALEX FROM ROSWELL?!? Out of absolute nowhere. And Quentin from One Tree Hill season six? And I'll add my vote to Abby from Dawson's Creek.
Yes, I agree about Joyce. She was in recovery, the worse was behind and she had just been on a date. INCREDIBLY shocking for Buffy to find her that way. Tara's death also.
Also shocked with Lorne shooting Lindsey on Angel.
Doyle on Angel. Doyle. DOYLE.
I think she meant Bobby Ewing. He was killed off only to walk out of the shower a year later. Turns out his death was a year-long dream his wife had.
Kenny - the first time.
Those bastards!
Chuck Cunningham on Happy Days. Well I guess he died since he disappeared after the 2nd season. He was never mentioned again.
As long as some of us are dipping into the mists of the past: Catherine on Beauty and the Beast, and Tasha Yar on STTNG. When Derek died on TSCC, I was all, "They Tasha Yar'ed him?"
Helen from the first season of MI-5 (aka Spooks). She was deep fried people!
The Kutner death is #1 in my books. And thats just because I'm addicted to House :p
Lucy's death was the reason I stopped watching ER, it was so disturbing...
Mrs. Landingham was unbelievable.
"No, she is dead."
Dule Hill's performance was amazing.
Definitely not only was Marissa's death a shock but it marked the end of The O.C.
Everyone's talking about Lucy and Romano from ER, have they forgotten Mark Greene. It's too bad he went out that way, he couldn't come back for the finale.
How about Scott from the original 90210; I suppose he wasn't catching on like the others but it seems a little extreme to kill off such a young character. Dylan's father was another shocher, just when they were starting to connect he died. And look what happened to Dylan after. He went after the man whom he thought killed his father, married his daughter who then got killed. And the ironic thing, his father wasn't dead.
There's no shortage of surprsing deaths on 24. Jack's wife Teri who was also pregnant. Jack's friends like Robert Ellis, Edgar Stiles, Curtis Manning whom he had to kill, Michelle Dessler and Tony Almeida, whom we thought was dead. Jack's bosses like Walsh, George Mason, Ryan Chappelle who died at Jack's hands, and now Bill Buchanan. But no doubt the biggest death, David Palmer, although I was not completely surprised cause we knew Dennis Haysbert was going to star in the new show The Unit.
Between reading the article and going through all the comments .. I am SO bummed now about all the characters over the years whose deaths have been shocking, sad/emotional ...
How about Prue from Charmed? The show centers around the three characters, Prue, Piper, and Phoebe and with one of them gone how would the show continue. It was fortunate that in an earlier episode, it was revealed that their mother had an affair with someone else. And when the new season began, it was revealed she had a daughter whom she put up for adoption. But nevertheless, Prue's death was very shocking.
How about the death of the father from Good Times?
I'm a bit chagrined to say I've only seen two of these deaths (from Lost and Heroes), so I'm mostly going to echo some others I agree with from above and add a couple more.
Definitely for me Lucy from ER, completely shocking and heartbreaking. Also Roslyn Shays from L.A. Law. That was so unexpected, it took me a moment to figure out what had happened. "Did she just... she did. What the hell?" I was expecting it to be only a floor or two, but nope. Also agree with Dr. Frasier on Stargate SG-1. One moment saving a badly wounded soldier, then zap! - dead.
Yes to Tasha Yar. Also Jadsia Dax on Deep Space 9, because ouch, that one hurt.
Also agree with some of the Whedon deaths, but that would be a long discussion.
Definitely to Joe Coffee from Hill Street Blues and Cherry from China Beach (such awesome shows).
Maybe more emotional than shocking, but still affecting: Catherine from Beauty and the Beast (agree Yvaugh). I'd also mention Elliot Burch here - didn't see his death coming.
Captain Freedom from Hill Street - for such a minor character, I was affected.
And to totally cement my nerdiness - Joxar on Xena: Warrior Princess, because he was Joxar the Mighty! He wasn't supposed to die!
How can this list not have Col. Blake? Oh, I forgot. TV started with the Care Bears.
This has been done before. Better. http://www.translucentfish.com/TFP/list_tvd/tvd_01.html
The most shocking thing about Kutner's death for me was the realization of just how low the writers had sunk in resorting to lazy, cheap stunts while trying to pass it off as risky and brilliant. Nauseating.
The handling of Kutner's suicide was the opposite of Dualla's. The former was absurd and the latter heart-rending yet read as realistic.
Speaking of XWP - the death of the titular character (well, the fact that she stayed dead for a change) still affects the fans. Now THAT is a death worthy of a character.
Gotta go with Henry Blake, though as #1 of all time for me. I was very, very young when I saw it -- it felt as though I had instantly turned to ice inside.
Kate from NCIS will always top my list...it would have been more shocking if we hadn't been spoiled that somebody would die, but the rooftop scene was intense enough, and the moment of relaxation afterward was brief enough, that it still floored me.
Although the reveal of 'mystery-woman-is-CTB' was more shocking than her actual death, I still agree that she belongs on the list.
Bonnie from Jericho was heartbreaking, although I'm less surprised now that they Went There given that the show was running on fumes anyhow.
So far as ER goes - I'd only just started watching before Lucy's death, Mark's was too dragged-out to really make an impact, Romano's was too ridiculous to make an impact, and I never cared about Pratt, so I'll have to go with Gallant. (Unless we're counting fake deaths, in which case, Luka.)
(...sorry, wrong tags.)
Ohh good call on Helen! I had completely forgotten but didn't see that one coming at all.
Kudos on The Shield finally getting some respect.
I'm sorry but I hated Amber, and wasn't in the least bit upset when she died. I wanted her gone long before her tragic death. The one that made me cry was losing Kutner. Of all House's new fellows, he was the one I cared about.
Tosh and Owen on Torchwood would be second on the list for me. The rest, well I didn't even watch those shows so I can't comment.
Wow, people are totally forgetting about The Sopranos... Adrianna getting whacked? What about Christopher being helped to his death by Tony? In the first five minutes of the show? I was SHOCKED.
I agree about Col. Blake on MASH too. That was heartbreaking.
We all knew that McLean Stevenson was leaving MASH but when Radar walked into the room and announced that Col. Blake's plane went down and there were no survivors I started crying. That episode still gets to me.
Gotta go with Dualla's suicide on BSG. It was a jaw dropping moment for me. I was surprised at Tory when she blew Cally out of the launch tube, but I wasn't shocked by Cally's death.
Rosalind Shays' fall was unexpected, but I remember laughing more than feeling bad. I never liked Diana Muldaur after what she did on ST:TNG. In my mind, it was Dr. Pulaski going down a turbolift shaft.
I think Cassie from Hex deserves a shout out for most shocking, simply because it's not often you see the fricking main character offed and replaced with someone else.
Ooooh, for a funny shocking one, Larry from Garth Merenghi's Darkplace.
Dr Rick Douglass: *walks into room* Larry?
*Larry explodes*
Dr Rick Douglass:...Are you all right?
Then he has to kill Larry's severed head with a shovel. It was strange and amusing.
Two i really liked that caught me off guard were Lara Flynn Boyle's character on Las Vegas and Gina on Nip/Tuck. Both seemed to happen very abruptly.
I was the most shocked ever when three of the five main characters died in Space: Above and Beyond. I hadn't known that it was supposed to be the last episode, so it really blew me over.
Amber on House made me cry like crazy, and I didn't even like her. Makes me so glad I didn't see the one with Kutner yet, because I loved him. And John dying on SPN made me cry too. A few others ones that caught me off guard would probably be Kate on NCIS and Coop on Profiler.
I remember way back when when Dr. Greene died on ER...I cried that day.
I saw the movie first and then the show and I was still totally shocked by Wash's death. I'd even had it spoiled for me a while before and had forgotten about it so was still totally stunned when I saw it happen. (Then saw the show and could not stop thinking about how awful his demise was).
re: doyle on angel; i don't think the death of the character as actually planned, i think the writers had to work with the fact that the actor died
Glen Quinn died a few years after Doyle was killed. His death was shocking though.
Kutner's death on House just came out of nowhere. I am very sad about it.
